Re: a tap tapt see rant
My problem with TapTapSee has always been the fact that I cannot send a question along with the image. As for labels being read, whether it is a human, or a computer, print is not like braille. If the camera is moving, in the slightest, print blurs. If the camera is tilted at all, in any direction, from the plain of the writing, parallax causes parts of the text to look very different, and may well make it unreadable. If the lighting is blocked in any way, shading may well shadow parts of the text and cause the text to become unreadable. If the camera is too close to the text, the text may become so large in the picture that only part of it is there. If the camera is too far, the text becomes so small that it cannot be recognised. And, when two or more of these factors are combined, it becomes even more difficult to recognise / read the text. Oh, and let's not forget, if the camera lens becomes too smudged, text and other images become blurry. If your recognition images have been getting worse over time, the first thing I would do is use windex on the camera lens. According to what I have read, Apple suggests only using Windex to cleanse the special glass which covers the camera lens. Eileen, I am afraid I am one of the few people on this list who has never really liked TapTapSee. When it was free it was at worst a dubious tool for me, but with the advent of the credit system I just deleted it from my phone. The tools I tend to use for various types of identification are: textGrabber, camFind, and red laser. As for fortune cookies, I have never had one! Fortune Cookie Fortunes was RE: a tap tapt see rant
Sorry to inject levity into this discussion but my fortune the other day at the Chinese restaurant was how deep would the oceans be if there were no sponges. If most fortunes are like that, I'm not sure you're missing much. To keep this on topic, I would think an app like Text Grabber might work better but you've got the issues of the very tiny print and the curling paper to deal with. To end on a related note: Be persistent and you'll receive your ultimate reward. Hi Sandy, I have never used Texj Grabber in a moving vehicle. I'll have to store that in my tips bag for the future. Thanks for the tip on using Facetime. I have never used it, so I'll have to read up on what is involved. I do have plenty of family and friends that have iPhones. Also, MBraille now supports a dot command for it, so it will make it a snap to use it. With Red Laser, it has been hit and miss if I can find the barcode and get it to work. I usually end up using Digit-Eyes or Talking Goggles, which depends on what I need to identify. Text Grabber is my app of choice with the StandScan. It is more accurate than my scan and read software and hardware on my PC. Oh by the way, a cookie fortune is a tiny piece of paper maybe 1/2 X 1-1/2 in size (approx.). Re: a tap tapt see rant
Hi Sieghard, Let me just say that the ability to send text, since the app is already sending an image, is basically trivial. Now this does not address how the back end that the app uses deals with the text sent or if it can actually receive anything but images. However, as far as sending text from an app is concerned, it's basically super easy. :) I really feel that one point is almost being missed here, which is that if there is a question field for the customer, sure, images may still come back with no usable results, but at least the customer can be alerted to this and why this has happened, (I.E. image is too dark, or no clear text in image etc.) so the customer can more easily correct any issues. So in this respect I completely agree with Kay here. This app's main purpose is too assist blind and visually impaired people. If these are the concerns that are important to this population then the app does need to address these concerns, or at least attempt to. As you say, perhaps Tap Tap See is in fact addressing these concerns, so we'll see... Just my thoughts and thanks as always for some well-thought-out messages! :) Smiles, Cara :) On Feb 1, 2014, at 10:41 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Jerry, I think a lot of people still find Tap Tap See useful, get good information and don't mind the fact that sometimes what comes back is not perfect. Anyhow, Tap Tap See is one of several apps out there and you make the choice as to whether you want to use it or maybe I should say you choose whether it's worth it to you to buy credits. If not, there is Camfind, Digit-Eyes, Red Laser, Talking Googles and others most of which are free or can be purchased with a one-time payment. I think it's unfair to claim Tap Tap See isn't doing anything to add the ability to ask a question or to complain the feature is not yet there. We have to have the ability to ask a question or at least type one. Tap Tap See isn't giving out the information any longer as well as it used to after the purchasing of credits came into the picture. Something needs to be done here, because I'm not wasting money on something, that I can't use, and I'm sure many would agree with me. And every time we click a picture, if it gets answered, there goes another credit, even if the answer is wrong. This isn't right. Somehow if we get the information wrong we should be able to somehow make tap-tap-see aware of this and they should refund the credit back to us in my opinion. Excellent Points David! :) Let me add to this that also, occasionally, a label may be designed in such a way that a logo or color scheme is not optimal for the particular lighting conditions or may simply be printed in colors which do not show up well for easy reading, even by humans. So images like this may be very difficult to be interpreted. Thanks and have a lovely day! RE: a tap tapt see rant
Cara, Maybe I wasn't clear. When I was talking about sending text I meant that it would send a question which one could type into a text box rather than recording it in one's own voice. One could of course then use Dictation to quickly record a short question as in most cases the question would be short. In my thinking this might be a better option than recording a question like what VizWiz does since a short snipped of text would be transmitted a lot faster than a piece of audio. I think if Tap Tap See had a picker box with certain well thought out questions like What information is displayed on this LED screen, Who is the sender of this letter/package or What colour is this piece of clothing etc. in addition to a text field it's usefulness and the quality of the results would be greatly increased. Take cjare, Sieghard From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Cara Quinn Sent: Sunday, February 02, 2014 7:01 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: a tap tapt see rant Hi Sieghard, Let me just say that the ability to send text, since the app is already sending an image, is basically trivial. As you say, perhaps Tap Tap See is in fact addressing these concerns, so we'll see. Just my thoughts and thanks as always for some well-thought-out messages! :) Smiles, Cara :) On Feb 1, 2014, at 10:41 PM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca mailto:siegh...@live.ca wrote: Jerry, I think a lot of people still find Tap Tap See useful, get good information and don't mind the fact that sometimes what comes back is not perfect. The fact is that Tap Tap See occurs the cost of the image recognition whether the information is what you want or maybe even if the information you want is in your photo. Why don't we wait another 4 or 6 months, if it's not there then maybe it's OK to complain. It just isn't right for us to have to pay for something that plainly isn't doing anything to help figure out what we're looking at. Wasn't this the ap's purpose anyway? Just to add to this. I have a C Crane radio which has the 2 meter ham band. Since I wanted to set the five presets, I attempted to use Taptapsee to identify the digits on the display. I am pretty sure I had the display on focus with good lighting. So I took the picture and was told that it was a gray Crane radio. This sort of thing just adds to my frustration. In fairness to the software, I have gotten good results on other occasions. hi, I'm goint to wait to use this ap again after they put in a section so that you can verbaly or send a text question along with the picture inabaling better results. Though I think the writing on those slips of paper might be hard for anyone to read even with a good camera with good pixal count. Atleast they could tell you that though. Yes, but the ability to ask questions has already been put to the fine people at TTS and still nothing as of yet. That is not to say it isn't being worked on. I don't care how small or stupid to some people a fortune is, not everybody is going to want the same things from an app. It has done me many favors and read some really neat things to me but it seems more and more as though it is not doing the job expected. Several months ago, if I took a picture of a fortune cookie paper, which I had done, it would be read the first time. This is not the case any more. I have meat in my freezer which I buy by the side and by the pig and It does not have bar codes on it and just has labels that have to be read. RE: a tap tapt see rant
Yes, I agree, I as well have stopped buying credit for this app. I’m not going to buy credit for a product that doesn’t help me find the information I need. We have to have the ability to ask a question or at least type one. Tap Tap See isn’t giving out the information any longer as well as it used to after the purchasing of credits came into the picture. Something needs to be done here, because I’m not wasting money on something, that I can’t use, and I’m sure many would agree with me. And every time we click a picture, if it gets answered, there goes another credit, even if the answer is wrong. This isn’t right. Somehow if we get the information wrong we should be able to somehow make tap-tap-see aware of this and they should refund the credit back to us in my opinion. It just isn’t right for us to have to pay for something that plainly isn’t doing anything to help figure out what we’re looking at. Wasn’t this the ap’s purpose anyway? At least that’s how I perceived the description of it. Hi, I really value your post. I have been one of those who have been out on the fence and not purchase a 100 picture package, nor have I updated TaTapSee, which sits in my app store. Do you have Talking Goggles? I know it's not perfect, but it could give you enough of the info to identify the items you need. I just used it yesterday when I needed to trouble shoot my computer screen and give me the info I needed to make a decision on how to proceed. It's just a thought. Like you, I am disappointed that TapTapSee changed their business model, but I do understand why. In the past, there had been times when I needed to take more than one picture and the picture and would have counted against my 100 count. It's not that I object to supporting the debs and paying the fee, but I would like to have increased accuracy in the responses. I guess I am still one of the luckier ones that I still get a response to VizWiz when I send them a picture. JMO. Hi David, You have a point, but I wondering if Sandy (Queen of OCR) uses TapTapSee current version and is having problems with it. I feel like I am fairly skillful using OCR apps and before the update to tapTapSee that their were numerous times that I needed to retake a picture because of it not being identified on the first take. Re: a tap tapt see rant
Gosh, even if I am lucky enough to be around a sighted person, and ask for information on an item, they do not provide me with the information I am seeking on the first time--at least half the time. I recently moved, and since there was no way I could pack my entire household by myself in the amount of time we had, I started unpacking and no idea what all of these bottles were. I used Tap Tap See and while I got some woman holding black and blue bottle I bet 95% of the time I got true useful information. I too would love to see a text box put in, because when I held up a bag of coffee, I wanted to know if it was decaf or reg, and instead I just got the brand name. Digit-Eyes solved it for me, but. . . On 2/1/2014 9:59 PM, Eileen Misrahi wrote: Hi, I really value your post. Hi Kay, With all respect, you just said you had to resort to Camfind to get the job done so that means you were able to get the job done with Camfind, a free app, so why not just use it from now on or at least until Tap Tap See has made it possible to ask a question along with your text. Keep in mind that Tap Tap See is only one app/project for the developers. I’m not an app developer, but I assume changing Tap Tap See so you can ask a question or maybe pick from a list of certain general questions may not be as easy as you think. Personally I am happy anytime I successfully use any of these apps, Tap Tap See, Camfind, Talking Goggles etc., to recognize anything since it’s sure a lot more than what I was able to do before. I’ve been to Chinese restaurants with friends and even some of them who were perfectly sighted had a hard time to read these tiny slips of paper that come out of a fortune cooky. Well, at least I hope your message when you finally got the answer was “You will experience great financial gain soon which allows you to buy more Tap Tap See credits” *smile*. RE: a tap tapt see rant
Jerry, I think a lot of people still find Tap Tap See useful, get good information and don’t mind the fact that sometimes what comes back is not perfect. The fact is that Tap Tap See occurs the cost of the image recognition whether the information is what you want or maybe even if the information you want is in your photo. Anyhow, Tap Tap See is one of several apps out there and you make the choice as to whether you want to use it or maybe I should say you choose whether it’s worth it to you to buy credits. If not, there is Camfind, Digit-Eyes, Red Laser, Talking Googles and others most of which are free or can be purchased with a one-time payment. I think it’s unfair to claim Tap Tap See isn’t doing anything to add the ability to ask a question or to complain the feature is not yet there. Why don’t we wait another 4 or 6 months, if it’s not there then maybe it’s OK to complain. I use OCR on a daily basis to very good effect. I do not use TapTapSee because I cannot ask a question with my image. That said, I fully understand why the developers charge as they do. Eileen, I don't have a problem in the world with paying, I just think that we should get what we pay for. I don't know or understand what happened to the accuracy of what we need. JMO.
