Re: Best Mail Apps
Thank you, Sieghard, for that description. Since I have never used outlook in my life, and was only considering it as an alternative to the changed mail app in iOS 10, I am going to wait. Better the devil you know than the one you don't, especially after your description. RE: Best Mail Apps
I have some thoughts regarding your email delete problem, but I am far from being an expert. You said that you have tried the Gmail app. So I assume you have a Gmail account. If you are using the IMAP email protocol, I think it deletes the mail from the server and all other devices when you delete a message from your iPhone. But I do not use IMAP, so I could be wrong. If you use POP3 email protocol, you can change settings on your iPhone to "never delete from the server". To do this: Go to Settings > "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" Then double tap your email address. Scroll down and double tap the "Advanced" button. Double tap the "Delete from server" button. You have 3 choices for when to delete mail from the server. Your choices are: • Never • 7 Days • When removed from Inbox Double tap the one you want. Double tap the "Back" button In the upper left corner of the screen to go back to the "Advanced" settings page. Double tap the "Back" button in the upper left corner of the screen again to go back to the settings for your email account. Double tap the "done" button in the upper right corner of the screen to save the changes you made. If you don't want to save any changes, double tap the "Cancel" button in the upper left corner of the screen. Hope this helps. Since you said you tried the gmail app I assume you use gmail in which case you should be able to specify whether your messages are deleted on the server when you delete on your phone or not. I am not a gamil user, but I think you may have to go to Mail settings on your iPhone, then double tap on your account, look for "Advanced Settings" and see if there isn't a setting in there to accomplish what you want. However, the inability to delete posts from the phone without them also going to the trash on the server rather than archive is a huge downside given the limited space I have and the amount of mail I receive. I have tried the Gmail app but I don't find it very satisfying; it's just as easy to use the webmail interface. RE: Best Mail Apps
Mary, I would be careful with Outlook for a little bit longer (I'm sure they fix these issues) but during the beta cycle and as far as I can tell even in the last Outlook update which came out yesterday, it is not possible to set up an Outlook.com account which has 2-step verification enabled. The way this works is that you have to log into Outlook.com and if you turn on 2-step verification you have to generate so-called "app specific passwords" for each instance of Outlook you are running. In my case this means I have Outlook on at least 2 or 3 PC's and my iPhone so I need to generate 3 or 4 app specific passwords and use a different one each time I set up my Outlook.com account on a PC using the Outlook application or whatever other email client you may use as well as have one for my iPhone. In addition to that one cannot set up Office 365 accounts which mean I can't at this point set up my business email account on my iPhone. I think it's interesting that this hasn't been fixed yet since all of these are Microsoft services and the Outlook mobile app is a Microsoft app yet you can't use their own services with it if you have an Office 365 account or use 2-step verification which is what they recommend. Furthermore, if your Outlook.com web interface/experience has been upgraded to the new one it is fantastically inaccessable. The old Outlook.com website had a few quirks, but it was doiable just fine, the new one not so much. I have to try it maybe on one of my work computers since I am using a pretty old PC at home which is rather slow, but going onto Outlook.com just about makes it grind to a halt. It is on my list of things to do to call Microsoft Accessibility and do a bit of indignant yelling and complaining, I sure hope they are going to improve the accessibility for this. Considering their overall committment to accessibility which actually is pretty good when you look at Windows 10, especially the anniversary upgrade and many of their iOS apps and so on I think they'll hopefully do this soon. I don't know how to say this any better than I have several times already: if I move email to the trash on my iPhone, it goes to the trash on my webmail account too. I need mail to stay in my archive on webmail and not go to the trash.
