2013-10-28 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Rick,
Did you get your new speaker dock on target.com? Just curious. I don't yet have
anything with a lightning connector. And I will probably end up getting an iPad
mini, because the iPod touch fifth-generation is now kind of old in terms of
its hardware. But eventually, like when I upgrade my phone next year, I will
need a new doc, as my current one has the 30 pin connector.

I've been shopping around and can say that yes, there definitely are
docks around with a lightning connector and speakers that will work with
no problem. In fact if you just go to target.com and search for iPhone 5
speaker dock, you will see a few of them. FYI, another possibility is a
Bluetooth speaker that has a USB charging port. This means you can play
to the speaker via Bluetooth and charge your phone via the charging USB
 port.

In fact this is what I did to replace my Klipsch iPhone speaker dock
which only worked with a 30 pin iDevice. The one I decided on was the
SoundFreaq Kick for $99. It has controls for play/paus, volume up/down,
and prev/next and it has the USB charging port. It sounds terrific and
will go about 8 hours on a charge if you want to use it as a portable. I
just keep it plugged in but if I need to go portable with it I have the
option. It's bigger than a JamBox but still quite portable and sounds
way better than the small JamBox does.

Russ,

There is plenty of space even with an iPhone in a dock, some docks even have
enough space to accommodate a snug fitting case. Anyhow, I highly recommend
that you just go to a store like Best Buy or an Apple Store if you have one
closeby and just ask the staff to show you some docks. Most stores have
several out and on display so if you bring your iPod Touch you can try them
right there, see how the iPod fits, how it sounds etc.

If this is not an option then just order from the online Apple Store or
Amazon, just go with a merchant who offers a good return policy and then be
careful when you unpack it so that if you do want to send it back you can
put everything back together exactly as it was.

My question would be, with the iPod Touch being thinner, wouldn't the slot
for the doc be wider from fron to back to support the iphone 5. It would
seem to me that the ipod touch would have a gap in the slot because of it
being thinner?

Hi Russ,

The iPod Touch Fifth Gen is actually the same size as far as screen size ad
it does have the Lightning connector which I think is more the issue. The
only thing that is different is that the iPod Touch is thinner than the
iPhone 5 and that the edges in the back are slightly rounded instead of
being square like on the iPhone. But any dock that works for the iPhone 5
should work for the iPod Touch Fifth Gen.

with no problem. In fact if you just go to target.com and search for
iPhone 5 speaker dock, you will see a few of them. FYI, another
possibility is a Bluetooth speaker that has a USB charging port. This
means you can play to the speaker via Bluetooth and charge your phone
 via the charging USB port.

In fact this is what I did to replace my Klipsch iPhone speaker dock
which only worked with a 30 pin iDevice. The one I decided on was the
SoundFreaq Kick for $99. It has controls for play/paus, volume
up/down, and prev/next and it has the USB charging port. It sounds
terrific and will go about 8 hours on a charge if you want to use it
as a portable. I just keep it plugged in but if I need to go portable
with it I have the option. It's bigger than a JamBox but still quite
portable and sounds way better than the small JamBox does.

My question would be, with the iPod Touch being thinner, wouldn't the slot

seem to me that the ipod touch would have a gap in the slot because of it

Hi Russ,

That is true and as I said, I don't want to talk you out of getting an
iPad,
especially now with the iPad Mini getting such a nice upgrade I'll
probably
buy one sooner or later because I listen to Audible a lot as well. I
would
easily get 2 or maybe even 3 days out of my iPhone battery if I used a
different device to listen to books when I am at home and of course doing
email and browsing would be nicer, too. I could even turn off WiFi on my
iPhone most of the time which would save even more battery.

However, even if I had an iPad Mini, I would still often use my Outdoor

I have an older Philips Fidelio. It is rounded on the back with a
kickstand and has a 30-pin connector in front the phone/touch stands on. I
purchased the pin-to-Lightening adapter, and it worksjust as well.

You can find this on Amazon for $59. It has an internal rechargeable
battery, base boost and auxillary port. The Amazon link is below.

I highly recommend this for the portability, features and sound, not to
mention price.

Hi Russ,

That is true and as I said, I don't want to talk you out of getting an
iPad,
especially now with the iPad Mini getting such a nice upgrade I'll probably
buy one sooner or later because I listen to Audible a lot as well. I would
easily get 2 or maybe even 3 days out of my iPhone battery if I used a
different device to listen to books when I am at home and of course doing
email and browsing would be nicer, too. I could even turn off WiFi on my
iPhone most of the time which would save even more battery.

However, even if I had an iPad Mini, I would still often use my Outdoor
Tech
Turtleshell speaker. It has Play/Pause, volume up/down and skip
forward/back
buttons and a speakerphone so I can answer a call on it. Often if my iPhone
battery is low I just plug it in in the bedroom and my 1,100 square foot
house (that's the upstairs, basement is the same) has very few spots
where I
loose reception. I can just be in the living room or the kitchen with my
Turtleshell speaker and listen and I can even take it in the shower where I
have a rack a bit higher than head height and where it stays mostly dry.
The
Turtleshell is IPX 6 dust and waterproof so it doesn't matter if it gets
damp from steam or even if it gets a few drops of water or a bit of a
splash
on it.
The new Turtleshells which are coming out now use Bluetooth 4.0, here is a
brief summary from my sales rep (I sell these at my retail business) and if
you want to know more, just go to www.OutdoorTech.com.

I have a Bose Sound Dock 10 that I got for Christmas from my wife 2 years
ago. It comes with a bunch of adaptors you can put in to fit your device
but it's still a 32 pin connector. She bought me the Bluetooth adaptor.
I'm very glad she did. I pared my iPhone 5s with it yesterday. Now both my
iPhone 4 and my 5s both can connect to the sound dock 10.

I've been shopping around and can say that yes, there definitely are docks
around with a lightning connector and speakers that will work with no
problem. In fact if you just go to target.com and search for iPhone 5
speaker dock, you will see a few of them. FYI, another possibility is a
Bluetooth speaker that has a USB charging port. This means you can play to
the speaker via Bluetooth and charge your phone via the charging USB port.

In fact this is what I did to replace my Klipsch iPhone speaker dock which
only worked with a 30 pin iDevice. The one I decided on was the SoundFreaq
Kick for $99. It has controls for play/paus, volume up/down, and
prev/next and it has the USB charging port. It sounds terrific and will go
about 8 hours on a charge if you want to use it as a portable. I just keep
it plugged in but if I need to go portable with it I have the option. It's
bigger than a JamBox but still quite portable and sounds way better than
the small JamBox does.

Which bluetooth adapter did your wife get for you and how much? I've
been thinking about getting something like this since I have a few 30
pin docks around the house. I've seen some on Amazon but I'm afraid the
transport controls on the dock might not work with the adapter plugged in.

It's the Bluetooth adapter Bose sells for that unit. You pop out the plate
like the iPhone jack or an iPod template and put the Bluetooth adapter in
it's place. I thought my wife was nuts when she told me the adapter was
another hundred bucks. Now I'm delighted she did! Pairing was easy. I
just opened my iPhone 5s and opened Bluetooth. Then I pressed the paring
button on the adapter and it paired with my phone just like that!
