Do you mean you want to plug more devices into your router than it has ports?
If so just look for a 5-port or 8-port desktop switch
which all companies make, Linksys, D-Link, Netgear etc.
You use one of the ports of your router (most of them have 4 ports) and plug in
the desktop switch and then you have those 5 or 8
ports available (depending on which one you buy). I have a Cisco 16-port small
business switch at my store which has 8 regular and 8
POE ports power over ethernet, those are ports used for example if you have Ip
phones which need the network connection but also
require power). Often you can power POE devices with a separate adapter, but if
you have POE ports on your router the CAD5E or CAD6
cable provides the power for the device as well as the wired connection to your
network

Here is one example:
NETGEAR 5-port Gigabit Desktop Switch in Metal Case - Essentials Edition (GS305)

Hi, what solutions do people have when your router can no longer accept any
more pods/pads/phones/etc?

A device to hook to an rj45 port/socket would be good.

Thoughts please?

Respectfully, that really depends on how you define good advice. The

you not know the model of your device? It seems silly to me to blindly

Hello Bob,

Generally speaking I strongly recommend against using any wireless provider's
WiFi connection system. In some cases, one may obtain
a standalone MODEM from the provider, one without any WiFi capability. Then,
one can simply purchase a third-party WiFi router for
approximately $50 and use it to setup a WiFi network.

In other situations, one may prefer to purchase both the MODEM and the WiFi
router from a third-party retailer such as Best Buy.

In many cases, the provider does not offer a stand-alone MODEM and it may not
be possible to obtain a third-party MODEM that is
compatible with the wireless provider's network. In these instances, either
ask the provider to disable the WiFi signal on the
MODEM and then attach a third-party router to the provider's MODEM. Disabling
the wireless provider's WiFi signal, on the MODEM is
not a prerequisite to using any third-party router, however. This is to say,
without contacting the wireless provider, at all, one
can simply purchase a third-party router, and attach it to the wireless
provider's MODEM and it will work after a simple setup
procedure. Some people prefer to have the wireless provider's WiFi signal
disabled in order to reduce confusion as to which WiFi
network to select when connecting devices. This is not really a problem,
however, after one customizes the name of one's WiFi
network.

The bottom line on all of this is that I strongly suggest that you purchase a
Cisco-Linksys router from your local retailer and use
it for your home WiFi network. Then you can connect as many devices as you
like without fear of being limited by your wireless
provider.

Using a third-party, stand-alone router such as NetGear or Cisco-Linksys, also
adds a layer of privacy from the wireless provider
that I greatly appreciate.

You can access the setup/software configuration system on both the NetGear and
Cisco-Linksys devices by simply entering a URL
address from any browser connected to the router. For example, the default URL
for all Cisco-Linksys routers is 192.168.1.1.

Finally, in order to setup a router, without installing some kind of software,
you will need to physically connect a computer to the
router via an Ethernet cable. Once you have configured the router, however,
you can, should you choose remove that Ethernet cable
and connect to the router, wirelessly.

I realize that this is a lot of information to absorb but the process is really
quite simple and straight-forward.

In my opinion, I think that the benefits of setting up one's own home WiFi
router network, as opposed to using a wireless provider's
WiFi network, is well worth any effort.

Good Luck,

Mark

I assume Rob has a combined modem/wireless router from his provider based on
what he says. I think it' smuch more common in a techi crowd for people to buy
their own routers and to sometimes spend significant money for a high-end
router. With one of them you can of course do what you want, upgrade it, change
the password and so on, I doubt you can easily upgrade a router provided by
your supplier. I am not sure if they are set to upgrade on their own, but doubt
it.
At work I have at least 12 or 15 wireless devices connected to my router and
have no issues.

The WiFi routers I've used usually have a limit of 250 devices and they were
not that expensive, maybe $50.

I believe I have a Linksys now, but I do not know the model number off hand.

I'd say it would have to be a very old router to have that low of a limit.

2018-05-07 Thread Richard Turner

The WiFi routers I've used usually have a limit of 250 devices and they were
not that expensive, maybe $50.
I believe I have a Linksys now, but I do not know the model number off hand.
I'd say it would have to be a very old router to have that low of a limit.

2018-05-07 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi

Something's not right there. You're correct that some routers have a
limit but I'm as good as certain that that's not what's happening
here. Do you happen to know the model of your router? I'd also echo
the suggestion of a firmware update.

Cheers,
Ben.

For clarity: do these switches accept wifi connections? it is an excess of
wireless devices that is exceeding router capacity.

Thanks, BobH.
