Hi Matt,
The system showing the grey screen with a no-entry sign, indicates the computer
cannot boot the system.
I hope it is not what I fear, the most probable cause is a dead hard drive.
If you can boot from the DVD that came with your iMac (as Roger has suggested)
or the install DVD of
I ordered the i7 BTO with the Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad on the TGI

Hi Paul et al,
I made a similar order as you and it¹s also been delayed in Pudong since the
2nd... So we¹re all in the same boat/aeroplane or perhaps it¹s not even on
the plane yet.
Regards,
Chris.

Evening all
I am currently transferring all the information and data from my darling other
half's ageing PC to our new

which is through iinet (pop3)
Is it possible to receive mail on the iMac while still receiving mail
Thank Ronni Roger, I used the Mac OS X Install Disc 1, and followed
your (Ronni's) instructions. In the show details it had the normal

Greetings! Back at our club in the States (California) we had a monthly
clinic for our members. When ever we replaced a hard drive that was shown to
be faulty we would install the faulty HD in a HD enclosure and low and
behold it mounted. This happened about 80 percent of the time. i do not know
Me again! If your or any ones HD is defective do not discard it without
disabling it. There are a number of ways of doing this. If you have access
to an electric drill, drill a hole about 1 inch (2.5 cm) off the center of
the HD. This will ensure that no data can or will be recoverable.
Cheers,
Hi Pedro, when setting up your email account, you go to the Advanced tab and
check 'leave messages on server'. This means that the messages stay on your
server and can be downloaded to any computer you are using. Even if you delete
items on a particular mac, they are still on the server and

What should I do with Console now it is on the Dock and logging new data
frequently? This morning the Console log popped onto desktop at the same
time as the requested DiskUtility.log.(Coincidence?) Console shows a
steady count of 4000 messages so I assume the oldest entries are being
Hi Matt
Yes your HD has failed :( do you have Applecare on it still?
You will need a new HD and as Joe said they maybe a chance to recover some data
if you but the drive in an external case. But of course the most important
thing is to get a new HD :)
If we can help any more please ask.
Hi Alan,
To manually remove Growl:
1) Go into the Growl preferences in system preferences
2) Uncheck Display Growl Status in the menu bar
3) Uncheck Start at Login
4) Stop Growl
5) Click on Show All at the top of system preferences
6) Control+click the Growl preferences, then click to remove
Hi Alan,
I was rushing to finish another support job I'm on, and didn't have time to
explain why you are seeing Console.
When you requested the DiskUtility.log it opened Console, so you could view the
log.
While your computer performs tasks, it sends messages between applications,
processes,
Hi Ronni
(1) I am relieved that Console is just doing its job and that I can stop
worrying and just quit it.
(2) Thanks for the Growl uninstall instructions. I will probably do so,
but I will do a little research to see what it really does, if I can benefit
from it, and how it arrived
Hi Alan,
I just require the Disk Utility log Repair Permissions part thanks.
Did you install any software that came with the Maxtor HDD?
I noticed you mentioned File Manager in last reply RE: Is Help topic on
restoring system via Time Machine correct?

Hi again Alan,
I would get rid of Growl ... You don't need it, and It doesn't play well with
Snow Leopard.
Growl preference pane: It sort of works, but you need to restart System
Preferences into 32-bit mode.
The whole app is only 32-bit.
If you don't believe me ...
Thanks Ronni
1. I will uninstall Growl as next job.
2. Reference to File Manager was a faux pas - it has revealed my very long
MS Windows experience!
3. Maxtor HDD software: not installed - the only files on the HDD were to do
with displaying the Maxtor icon. These were deleted before I
Ok thanks Alan.
Your query as to how Growl was installed, Drop Box does install growl but it
warns you about it. There is a checkbox during the install asking if you want
Growl. you must have just clicked through it ;-)
Some other add-on utility type apps. also install Growl (or ask if you
Ronni
Thank you for your instructions on removing Growl.
Like Alan, I also was puzzled as to where this had come from, and why it kept
appearing on my desktop A newer version of Growl is Available. Click to
Install. I could not establish what it was for.
You would not believe it - I
Hi SusanIt appears iinet will only support pop3 accounts so she is stuck with the PCuntil she finishes the work she doing. In the mean time I get the glorious 27" screento myself for awhile. cheersPedroOn 11/12/2009, at 6:06 AM, Susan Hastings wrote:Hi Pedro, when setting up your email account,

Having decided to upgrade to Snow Leopard using a Mac Box Set I

I have done a back up and repaired permissions.

Well, Roger Ronni things are getting stranger. I thought in light
of last nights improvements in the response, that before I took it up
to Macworx, I would run Disk Utility on it one more time.
I booted from the External HD and the 931.5 GB WDC etc Disk icon
appeared with only Verify

Just on the off chance that someone knows somewhere that is having a

Hey Matt,
This sounds all very encouraging. I'm so pleased you have got your data back
and backed up.
I would do another bootable backup of your whole system if you are able to,
onto another external HD if you have a spare.
The HD on the iMac could still be failing and since it is still under
