Gemini is great. At $10ish is most I've ever spent on an app, but it's
saved me loads of time and given me space on my laptop. Very easy to
use also.

Hi Alan,
I forgot to mention that as soon as Mountain Lion starts up the first time,
Spotlight begins indexing (or re-indexing) all the files on all mounted
volumes. This process can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours,
depending on how many files you have and the speed of your
Hi Ronni
Thanks for the reassurance.
I will turn T.M. on after doing some neglected domestic chores. Thanks also
for your Spotlight comment - email arrived as I was writing this! Its been a
full day exercise to get to this point, so a night of Spotlight indexing will
be a bagatelle.
Folks,
Since moving to Lion, I am unable to easily read iCal - the very pastels defeat
the objective of clear reading - I end up with no grid. How would I get back
to the SL version?

Hi Bill,
You can change the color of a calendar and all its events.
To do this, click on the Calendars button at the top left of the iCal window;
right-click on a calendar, and choose 'Get Info'.
To the right of the calendar’s name is a popup menu that lets you choose
colors.
Click on this
Hi, I have 3 Macbooks in my house all attached to a Time Capsule for backing
up. One (MB1) has been backing up VERY reliably since 2009 when it was first
attached, the other two (MB2 and MB3) I thought were backing up reliably since
their connection in early 2012 but on closer inspection, it is
Hi Ronni
Just to close off this thread - - -
All is OK. Time Machine worked as you said and now shows oldest and newest
backups appropriately. This happened right at the end of the T.M. backup
sequence. BTW, I never noticed Spotlight working, but it seems to locate
things nicely. Must
Hi Peter,
Just a quick reply before I shutdown from computer work for the day.
First, it is important to distinguish this error message from another, similar
Time Machine error that states “The backup volume could not be mounted”. This
is important as the causes and cures for these two errors
Hi Alan,
If you can't get used to the new scrolling direction in Mountain Lion, you can
revert to the old style.
1) Click the Apple at top left of screen and select System Preferences...
2) Select the Trackpad icon in the Hardware row.
3) Click the Scroll Zoom tab at the top of the Trackpad
You can also do the same from the Mouse icon as well.
Though the steps would be :-
1) Click the Apple at top left of screen and select System Preferences...
2) Select the Mouse icon in the Hardware row.
3) Uncheck Scroll direction: natural
One less step ;) Sorry, couldn't resist,lol.
Yes. Well pointed out Daniel. If you have no trackpad attached the Trackpad
preferences will not open and one must make the change from the Mouse
preferences item. On the other hand if you have a MacBook with no mouse, the
mouse preferences will not open and one must make the change from the

Thanks Ronni, I can see I have at least one issue to resolve- the computers
name. Currently it is User's User and that by the way is not my sons name! I
think the apostrophe not being ASCII will throw it. By contrast the other two
MacBooks are properly named after their user.
So I will follow

It seems to be screen related - on my MB pro 15 week and month are faint but
readable. On my large screen (Mac), week unreadable and month faint.

Have you opened Launchpad from the Dock and checked if there is a 'Install OS X

Or in Applications?

Hi Ronni,
Sorry, didn't mention that. Yes, there used to be that icon in Launchpad. It's
now disappeared.
I never had to set it going again during the various attempts, unless I paused
it, then restarted. . It has kept going by itself.
There is no Mountain Lion download in Applications

I DO use the OpenDNS servers as search servers.
Perhaps it a Bigpond conspiracy :-)

Weird, You don't have Growl or anything that could be preventing a download of

Are you using OpenDNS or GoogleDNS instead of your ISP DNS?
You have checked your Modem/router?

Hi Tim,
That could be your problem, I've heard of Mac App Store download problems with
OpenDNS.
Perhaps try using Bigpond Western Australia DNS Server IP Address
Primary DNS Server IP Address 61.9.242.33
Secondary DNS Server IP Address 61.9.226.33

I DO use the OpenDNS
Okay thanks
I'll try that.
I've left OpenDNS as the search domains, and changed the DNS server to those
you gave me.

Ronni, I am deeply indebted to you. :-)
Two things are immediately noticeable.
One is that the download in the App Store is a strong 1mb a second. ie. I timed
10 mb and it took 10 seconds. This is very sweet.
Second, that I used to have slow connections on iView (1Mbps) yet achieve good
