It should be pointed out that ClamAV (and the MacOSX and Windows
versions) don't remove detected virus occurrences for a reason. Their
FAQ states:

   Can ClamAV disinfect files?

No, it can't. We will add support for disinfecting OLE2 files in one
of the next stable releases. There are no plans for disinfecting
other types of files. There are many reasons for it: cleaning
viruses from files is virtually pointless these days. It is very
seldom that there is anything useful left after cleaning, and even
if there is, would you trust it?

So, while you might choose Virex because it removes infestations, you
should think about what is happening underneath the hood.

I don't think the updates work any more because of this ??
Is this correct ? I can't see any way of actually checking.

I noticed someone recently recommending ClamXav.
I have downloaded it but have not yet installed it.
Would this be a good replacement for Virex ?
Or (if Virex still woks) a I better off staying with Virex ?

ClamXAv will not remove viruses (it just detects them), whereas
Virex will attempt to do so in most cases.

But it does give the user an option of automatically removing virus
into a quarantine folder. So, as to do with as you wish, following
means of destruction according to virusDB, but it will no longer be
active.

A reason for ClamXav over others besides cost factor, is it's actual
virusDB, update procedures, and response time to new outbreaks, check
the website. http://www.clamav.net

Do not install on Mac OS X server.

Be careful when setting check .mbox do not set with quarantine folder
active.

Documented in ClamXav. http://www.clamxav.com

I do not let it scan .mbox as I have quarantine active; if I suspect
an .mbox. I make a copy of said .mbox and drop this into ClamXav. If
it finds something I can go and remove suspect file without damaging
the .mbox, and have to spend hours repairing .mbox.

Car Stereo and iPod

2005-08-09 Thread Michael Schmidt
Hi.

I want to buy new car audio equipment but want to attach my iPod as
well. Does anyone have any recommendations for a unit. I'd like a radio
but CD player isn't necessary.

If you know of a good store or company to deal with that would be good
to know about too.

Thanks,
Michael

I do, and Virex quite happily removes *most* Word macro viruses on
the Mac, which is good because

* They're pretty much all the viruses that are on the Mac.
* The Word documents are usually what users care about the most.

Do I trust it? As much as I trust ClamAV, even if I can't look at the
Virex source.

Have fun,

iMac 700MHz - Memory and availability?

2005-08-09 Thread Malcolm Burtenshaw
I've been looking over older mac models and my sister might benefit
from a 700MHz G3 Indigo or Graphite iMac. It looks like it takes
normal SDRAM. Is that true because I have twin 256M sticks for it if
it is.

Also, does anyone know if any 700MHz iMacs are available over here
for purchasing second hand. I've checked eBay and got a bunch of US
sellers but would prefer a local source if possible.

Hi Mal

Yes the iMac G3 700Mhz uses standard PC133 SDRAM memory, so what you have
should work fine. (The bus will actually read PC100 and PC133, but PC100
isn't as common anymore.)
I don't have any of the 700Mhz models at the moment, but I've got a couple
of 500Mhz models (at $350) if you were interested.

Hope that info helps.

Enjoy!

Kind Regards
Daniel

1x Unopened box of 5 Blue + 2 Black - $200 ($350rrp)
1x Unopened Maintainence Kit - $100 ($230rrp)

Loose Ink Blocks - $150 the lot.
1x Magenta block still in plastic
1x Black block still in plastic
2.5x Black blocks loose in printer
2.5x Magenta blocks loose in printer
2.5x Blue blocks loose in printer
2.5x Yellow blocks loose in printer.

If you buy all the ink, you can have the printer for nothing. It is
still good for parts, and it still generally prints.

Lombard bronze keyboard wanted

2005-08-09 Thread wyvern

Hi Folks,

Does anyone have or know of anyone with a keyboard for the G3 Lombard
laptop [bronze keyboard] sitting around spare?

I was away, laptop fine then laptop she no go got back to perth and
hey there was Craig Ringer's email describing almost the exact same
sickness so I tried all the suggestion but nope so I took it to Stu at
Team Digital and got the call this afternoon. The keyboard is dead and
he cannot get one. My options find one or use an external keyboard.
I have a spare iMac keyboard so laptop will live again but I'd rather
get a replacement if I can.

Craig if you are still having the problem with yours disconnect the
keyboard and try an external could be you have the same problem.

Beige G3 probs

Mactracker says Max OS for Power Macintosh 6400 is 9.1 so it should
load if the disc is for power pc and not iMac [I think the discs are
different but I'm no expert on that]

Is the Mac good and works on other monitors?
Are there any other (even unrelated) probs?
Is it trying to boot 9 or 10?

This was happening to me recently, a bit like an iMac with a dead
display and noise from the box and power light is on.

It would 'sometimes' come up as 9 booted especially after PRAM resets.
So it wasn't completely consistent, however it was quickly getting worse
and given enough time I believe it would have not worked at all like yours.
Occasionally it would come up as 10.3.9 booted, only to reveal kernel
panics.

It was really doing my head in till I saw bad display artefacts during
an attempted 10.2 CD boot.

Bad RAM. Sheesh!
This is the second Mac I've met with bad RAM, the first was our first, a
6100/66.
There were a few other enigmatic bugs under 9, this together with it's
fruity on screen behaviour and kernel panics led me to the RAM.

Now fixed, and I have to say it is going like a trooper.
Thanks to MemTest, XPostFacto and PatchBurn.

It was the G3s first OSX install.
No upgrades, aside from some new RAM of course ;) and it is a very
capable OSX box for the mum and dad audience.

Good Luck
Paul

It might be because the disk is one which came with another computer.
If you had an off-the-shelf disk it would work.

Many thanks to Rob and Rod and Ronni!
After Ronni's suggestion about chapter markers I created 3 new projects and

indicating that this movie was the culprit.
I then went back to the offending movie and removed the Chapter markers, and
voila it then burnt happily.
Thanks!

 Hi Rod,

Are you burning from a Disk Image? I find this is safer.

Check you don't have mixed audio 44.1KHz and 48KHz on the disc 2
 project.
 Should all be 48KHz - 16bit Audio.

Also -34506 errors are sometimes caused by Chapter Marker problems.
