[WAMUG] Email question

2024-04-16 Thread FW via WAMUG
Hello all,

I am using mail (version 12.4) on my Mojave 10.14.6 iMac.

Currently, when I am trying to send an email only one email address (the iiNet
address)
shows in the “From” line. The other (iCloud) address is no longer available and
I can not
choose to use it for outgoing mails.

Have looked under Accounts in Mail and the iiNet and iCloud addresses are both
activated and
I have not made any changes.

Emails sent from someone else to the iCloud address are arriving ok.

Any helpful hints would be appreciated,

Cheers.

Re: [WAMUG] iPhone iOS 17.1.2 Handoff

2023-12-11 Thread FW via WAMUG
Hello Robin and Stephen,

I did what you suggested Robin.
Last night after de-selecting Handoff it was still happening.
But this morning the audio is available as soon as I touch the “Audio” button.

So it’s all good now, thank you both for your help.

Cheers
Walter

[WAMUG] iPhone iOS 17.1.2

2023-12-11 Thread FW via WAMUG
Good Evening,

When I receive and accept a call, I normally - where possible - touch the
Audio button to hear the caller while I carry on
with whatever I am doing.

Then a new screen comes up which asks me to make a selection from the list:

iMac Intel
iPad
Speaker
iPhone

When I touch Speaker, the caller can be heard.
Is it possible to adjust some setting so that “Speaker" is the default ? ?
Without having to see the other options ?

Thanks,

Cheers

[WAMUG] iPad WiFi connectivity

2023-06-08 Thread FW via WAMUG
Good Morning all,

I have a question regarding the receiving and sending of emails on the iPad.

In my home LAN I can receive and send emails via WiFi.
Also when I go somewhere and log into another LAN.

Overseas I can only receive emails but not send.

Sometime ago I was told that some mail setting had to be changed/added in
order to send emails.
I can’t remember what it was.

Anyone has any idea what it is ?

Thanks,

cheers

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for the hint.
I am just looking at it now.
So far have not found “Font Panel” but Font Book is now in the dock.

Cheers

Re: [WAMUG] Question about fonts

2022-06-07 Thread FW
Hi Peter,

“Input sources” was already activated in my system.

But I was not aware of how to add an emoji when writing an email. I had often
wondered how others do it.
Now I know.
Very clever how you can select a font after you have clicked on the character
needed.
Also, it's nice how the meaning of emojis is explained without having to go on
the net.

Will be using that new aspect of the system from now on.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

Walter

[WAMUG] Question about fonts

2022-06-05 Thread FW
Good evening people,

some operating systems ago I used to be able to display the font list in their
actual styles rather than having to select each font
to see the style. E.g. when working with Preview, Mail, TextEdit, OpenOffice
etc.

When I am looking for a font that shows the 0 [zero] with diagonal line I don’t
want to open 40 fonts to find it.
[someone told me Monaco is the one I was looking for]

How can this be done in Mojave 10.14.6 ? I can’t remember which setting had to
be changed.

Had a look at FontBook settings but didn’t find the trick.

Cheers

Re: [WAMUG} flagging emails Big Sure

2021-03-31 Thread FW
Thanks Pete and Robin,

I am forcing myself to understand.

It’s the most user unfriendly change as the inbox listing no longer shows at a
glance which emails
are flagged.
If the word “unflag” is under the flag [on the top menu line] the email is
flagged ? Is that how it
works ? So the idea of finding something quickly - because it was flagged - is
gone ?

Cheers
Walter

[WAMUG} flagging emails Big Sure

2021-03-28 Thread FW
Good evening all,

on my wife’s iMac running 11.2.3 I am not able to flag an email.

Previously [on Mojave] the flag would show on the left of the email list.
When I go to the Flag button on the top menu line I can select the colour but
the email is not flagged.

What am I doing wrong ?

Hello everyone,

Recently I upgraded the iPad to iOS 13.4 after reading that one can use a
trackpad via bluetooth
connection to navigate on the iPad.
It does work, the curser is a small grey dot and I can open applications,
however I haven’t been
able to work out how to navigate back to the home screen using the track pad.

Has anyone tried it ?

Re: ApplePay / Bankwest

2019-02-03 Thread FW
Hi Susan and Tim,

Thanks for your suggestions.

Yes, have just read on the Apple site how to remove a card in Wallet.
Except when I go to >settings, >Wallet & Apple Pay I should tap the card that I
want to remove - but because
the card was never ever successfully added (“Card Not Added” and so on) it does
not appear on the list and
can not be deleted. When I follow the prompts in Wallet to add a card it wants
to add the card in question
but after entering the CVV code and tapping the “Agree” button again the Card
Not Added message returns.

Tim, the names on the card and on the iCloud payment details were different
last week (middle name difference)
but I corrected it last week and now they correspond 100% (and Apple sent me
confirmation of the changes).

I wonder what would happen if I removed the card within iCloud payment setup ?

Cheers
Walter

ApplePay / Bankwest

2019-02-03 Thread FW
Good morning all,

Has anyone tried to activate Wallet with ApplePay Bankwest ?

I have tried for a week, it always fails and the message I get on the iPhone is:

“Could not add card, contact your card issuer”

Bankwest claims that the name on the card is different from the Wallet name -
so it can’t work and I should
change the Wallet name ???

The details in settings under “Payment & Shipping” are the same as on the card.

Apple help line tells me there is no Wallet name and have asked me re-scan the
card - but it is not working.
As soon as I open Wallet the same card comes up, Apple could not find a way to
delete it in the screen sharing
session we had. They asked me to contact Bankwest again because they think
Bankwests system is not authenticating
my card.

Deleting the Bankwest app did not make any difference.

It’s dead end at the moment.

Confused,

Cheers
Walter

Re: Mojave and EyeTV ?

2018-10-22 Thread FW
Hi Ronni, hi Tim,

My EyeTV version is 3.6.9, and checking for updates it tells me I’m using the
latest version.
Have just installed Mojave and EyeTV still works 100%.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Skype

2018-06-19 Thread FW
Thanks Marcus, Peder and Neil,

Neil I have tried to follow Crazytechtricks website suggestions and others.
It wouldn’t work for me because the 4 digit number code Skype sent (?) never
arrived on my phone.
However, after much frustration suddenly I could enter my old user name and
password.
It’s all working now - without getting a MS account.

A friend tried to install the new Skype last night. He ended up getting the MS
account, but his
new user name from now on is his phone number. His contacts are not listed.
Nobody will be able to find him. He is wondering if he can still change the
user name to his old one.

Yes Marcus, I am using WhatsApp all the time. I like it and it does everything
for my requirements - but it won’t
work on the desktop computer.

Thanks again
Walter

Skype

2018-06-18 Thread FW
Good morning Skype users.

I was trying to have a Skype contact on my wife’s iMac.

After opening Skype it told me I had to upgrade to the next version.
I downloaded and installed the next version 8.23.

The setup procedure ended in a road block because it asks me to:
“Sign in with a Microsoft account”. I should create one if I don’t have one.
I don’t have such an account and don’t want to create one.

Is there a workaround ?

Thanks and cheers

iMac Stuck on loading screen

2018-05-26 Thread FW
Good morning all,

I’m looking for help to solve my problem with the iMac (10.13.4) booting
approx. 60% then it’s stuck.
I have shut it down and tried to boot in Safe mode which worked. (is in safe
mode now).
Also launched into recovery mode (Command+R) and tried Repair disc which it did
and reported “Operation successful”.
Looked at the list of applications and found one that was installed yesterday:
PITCHOFCASE.
After reading on the net it sounds like it’s a Bitchofcase ?
Tried some of the suggestions on the net to find and remove unwanted
Pitchofcase files.
Checked extensions in Safari preferences, but only 1Password is listed.
Tried to open Malwarebytes but it was: "Background service is offline”.
Removed Malwarebytes and reinstalled it, scanned it, it came up with a clean
scan but looking under Quarantine
it had quarantined 5 Pitchofcase files which I trashed within Malwarebytes.
Emptied trash.
Tried a normal restart but nothing has changed - it won’t go further than 60%.
Now back in safe mode.
Also searched in WAMUG archives for that problem but did not really find
anything.
Tried to open 1Password, it jumps around and talks about a vulnerability
problem and change password.
Tried to open iPhoto, the pictures are all black.
iTunes opens but no sound, I guess because I’m in safe mode.
I have the option of reinstalling the system from the Superduper clone.

Looking for any suggestions.

Thanks
Walter

Hi Ronni,

Yes I did read the “Read me”. There was much information about the previous
versions etc.
I can’t remember seeing anything about “Move language files to trash”. And it
did of course
talk about selecting files to be removed - which were already selected.
However, before attempting the second run I went into preferences and did set
move files to trash. Did not select automatic updates. But the result was the
same - the 1byte removed response.
So does it mean that Monolingual won’t give you a second chance ?

Thanks Ronni.

Re: running out of space

2018-03-29 Thread FW
Hi Ronni,

I followed your advice and now have available 243GB. I even deleted EyeTV
recordings that had already been
exported into iTunes.
With the Monolingual I am not sure if it has really done the job ?
I was under the impression that the ticked files would be removed. Only English
and some euro languages I
left unticked. After clicking the Remove button it took some time and then the
following message was
displayed: “Space saved: 1 byte”
I closed Monolingual and opened it again and all the files were still listed
with the ticks in place.
When I open System Preferences >Language & Region I can see the languages after
clicking on the + to add
more to the “Preferred languages” Is this a valid way of checking for available
languages ?

Confused again

Cheers

Hi Ronni,
I have a question on the same subject.
My HD on the 2009 iMac is 1TB and available now is 157GB.
Enough ? Or should I look at moving iTunes files or iPhoto files to an ext/HD ?

I am also now looking at the language file situation.

Thanks

Re: SPAM

2018-02-01 Thread FW
Hi Rod,

Yes, same here.
The annoying thing is, that there is often no “unsubscribe” button on the
email. (BitCoin™ etc)
And lots of others that have the unsubscribe, but when you click on it a
webpage opens with a
some other sales campaign etc.

High Sierra

2017-10-06 Thread FW
Hi,

Just wondering about the High Sierra update ?

Have checked for updates for my late 2009 iMac (10.12.6) in the App store -
there is no notification.
It lists updates done in the last 30 days.
Perhaps its too old ? Or has the final version not yet been released ?

Then I did the same check in my friends iMac (Mid 2014) . No update appears in
his app store page either.

Confused

Cheers

Hi Ronni,

Have looked under GENERAL but can not find an option USE SIDE SWITCH. The side
switch acts as a mute switch - not rotation lock.
Notifications in iMessage and WhatsApp ok.

Thanks Ronni

Re: Managing apps in iTunes 12.7.0

2017-09-22 Thread FW
Hi Ronni,

Thank you for your comments.

I don’t really want to re-download the apps. They are already in the iOS device.
Can the apps no longer be managed on the iMac iTunes screen while the iOS
device is connected to that iMac ?
It lets me manage films, TV shows etc. - but apps I can’t see on the side bar ?
I can move the apps around on the iOS device screen, but it’s more convenient
on the big screen.

Cheers
Walter

Managing apps in iTunes 12.7.0

2017-09-22 Thread FW
Good morning,

Apps no longer appear in the iTunes sidebar of the device I have just connected
to the 10.12.6 iMac. (iPhone or iPad).
They are not listed under “Summary” or “On my device”.

Have tried some of the suggestions on the net and the “View and manage
purchased apps” hints to unhide them
in the iTunes help section - but no luck.

I would like to re-arrange apps on the iOS devices, any resolution would be
appreciated.

Thanks
Walter

Re: NBN Speedtest disappointment

2016-09-20 Thread FW
do you have NBN to the premises ?
We have NBN to the house via iiNet and it is usually around 23Mbps on a 25Mbps
plan here in Booragoon.
For some reason when streaming overseas TV channels it is often stop-start,
especially in the evening. I have
been told the ISP can “throttle” that type of streaming mode. Anyone has the
same experience ?

Re: Apple TV 4 blinks

2016-09-19 Thread FW
Hi Ronni,

I tried the restart procedure with the remote. The LED started to flash even
faster but the Apple TV would not start.
Finally got a USB-A > USB-C cable from DV Computers in Myaree. Tried to restore
via iTunes. There was no evidence that
the restore had started. After a few minutes I got the “The Apple TV could not
be restored. An unknown error occurred (12)”
alert on the screen. Went to the Garden City Apple store, they restored it.
Works again, had to load some apps.

Thanks Ronni

Apple TV 4 blinks

2016-09-17 Thread FW
Hi,

my Apple TV blinks, it won’t start anymore.

I am trying to restore it with my 7 year old iMac as suggested on the Apple
support page.
Unfortunately Apple Garden City and JB HiFI don’t sell a USBC cable to USB2.
Does that mean I have to book it in with the genius guys ? Or is such a cable
available ?

Thanks

Re: WIFI data meter

2016-07-28 Thread FW
Hi Ronni,

Have just installed Bandwidth+ on my iMac.
In the settings tab “Monthly” do I have to select Ethernet or name of LAN
(BoBLite) ?
I want to make sure I am also monitoring the traffic going to the IPTV box.

Thanks

Re: Virtual private network

2016-07-16 Thread FW
I recently got the ATO call and was told the police could be knocking on my
door to arrest me.
I agreed with the caller that I was guilty of tax evasion and offered to pay
back the 5 million $ right now if he
would give me the ATOs banking details and promise to stop the police.
He didn’t expect that response and hung up. I didn’t even have time to ask
about the weather in Mumbay.

Cheers

Re: NBN providers

2016-05-14 Thread FW
Hi Ronni,

Just another NBN question.
We have been on an iiNet NBN FTTP 25/100 plan plus Fibre phone since April 2014.
It works well except when streaming european TV channels on IPTV in the evening
(no problem watching SBS-On-Demand movies). Despite the NBN connection the
network seems to be overloaded in the evening (too much buffering to enjoy).
Would a change to a faster download speed (50/100) improve the situation ?
iiNet is happy to upgrade but won’t guarantee anything.

Thanks Ronni

Cheers
Walter

Hi Ronni,

Have tried before and again today following your Apple link. AirDrop does not
work. AD can be selected on both Macs, but
no luck. Also from Mac to iPad not working. (Bluetooth + WiFi turned on)
I wonder what is the trick.

Does iTunes have to be open in order to connect the ATV to contents on the iMac

On my system it has never worked without opening iTunes first.

Re: Apple Recalls Some International Wall Plug Adapters

2016-01-29 Thread FW
I am having the same dilemma. We have 4 iOS devices but 5 chargers. One charger
remained here when the iOS device was handed over to a
family member.
Don’t know why each charger needs to be assigned to an iOS device. If the plugs
may become a safety hazard they should be exchanged or destroyed in any case.
I’ll try my luck at the Garden City store .

Cheers,
Walter

I had the same good Garden City experience. No seriel numbers required, just
swap and go.
The queue was short, due to sufficient staff.

Re: How to convert a POP email account to IMAP

2015-10-16 Thread FW
Hi all,

Just a final question:
In the initial post Peter quoted :

“with a POP account, if you check your emails on your iPhone, the messages
downloaded there will only be there; when you
get back to your Mac, you won’t see them in your inbox. With IMAP, they’ll be
on all your devices”

On my iinet POP account the messages are downloaded to the iMac + iPad. So I
make the iinet account inactive on the iPad to
avoid having to read them again. And when I come back from Rottnest I see all
the emails on the iMac after having read them
already on the iPad (when the account was active).

Thanks
Cheers
Walter

Time machine HD

2015-10-03 Thread FW
Good morning all,

What is the reason for the time machine HD ikon on the screen not changing to
the familiar green TM clock logo.
Instead it shows the original yellow colour of a HD. The HD is used only for
the TM backups. On the Get Info
screen it shows the TM ikon. In the TM system preferences that HD is assigned
to TM and TM turned on.
Previously, it always took some time after reconnecting the HD to the iMac. Now
it won’t.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for your comment.
I just looked at the current version I have. It’s only 8.4.1.

So I’ll do the upgrade now connecting to iTunes.

Cheers,
Walter

won an iPhone etc.

2015-09-03 Thread FW
Hello all,

Does anyone ever respond the messages on Viber:

“You have won an iPhone 6”

But first they want me to download an app and then send my shipping address.

So far I ignored all of them.

Cheers
Walter

 Hi Walter,

NetCode is a highly effective yet convenient authentication system requiring
single-use passwords to authorise certain NetBank activities and transactions
or when you are shopping online at some websites.

The single-use password is sent to you via an SMS or the CommBank app (on iOS
or Android) and remains valid for two minutes.

I don't think you would have a Virus or Malware (I know you are very
careful about downloading and installing software have Java disabled or

 etc).

Personally I would think twice before using a credit card issued from this
bank (at least for awhile). Three newly issued cards all compromised -
Perhaps their Credit Card database has been hacked?

For my online purchases ( I do a lot of online purchasing) I use PayPal
when available, or my CBA MasterCard or AMEX - both use NetCode.
NetCode offers greater security and convenience for online shopping by
 using one-time passwords.
The password to authorise certain transactions is sent directly to your
nominated mobile phone, guaranteeing that you are the one making the
 purchase.

carry on as before with the new card when it comes.
