Re: [WAMUG] Which Email address?

2023-11-02 Thread Marcus Harris via WAMUG
As I understand the situation, IINET or WESTNET are the internet service
providers and that won’t change.
One isn’t obliged to use @ iinet or @ westnet.
I haven’t used those addresses for several years and I’m happy with all the
apple addresses @me @ Mac @ iCloud.

[WAMUG] Problem with replyingto emails in Apple Mail

2023-02-21 Thread Marcus Harris via WAMUG
I have an issue with Mail.
When I reply to an email, the text will not type normally, Initially the
letters are bunched together, then instead of typing a letter, the next key
brings up a text box and then another key moves to the image shown below within
a box requesting "markup “
I can do a work round by typing within the signature and then cut and paste,
but it’s not one off and more than annoying.
Any solutions gratefully accepted.

Hi there. I bought a Macbook Pro 2013 Retina 13” in 2013 (late). It
has been and is still a reliable Macbook. It doesn’t get used for

beginning to bulge upwards and the keyboard alloy shell is deforming
upwards. It still is working fine. I keep it on power all the time
and rarely take it away from the power to use it for portability.
Bulge is becoming more pronounced over time.

My suspicion is the nearly 10 year old battery is expanding and
pushing up the chassis from beneath the keyboard. I see some online
DIY battery replacement procedures and I’ve done many other Macbook
Air, Pro batteries before - but the Retina seems more complex,
though not overly daunting for my relevant experience in doing these
tasks. I could give it a go.

Naturally I have backups all in order in the event of a disaster.

Has anyone here done a 2013 MBP Retina 13” battery change - or would
 Apple even touch it?

 Comments please.

 Thanks in advance

 Peter Crisp.

Thank you Daniel,
The prices of the iMac and iPad seem fair.
The iPad Pro is likely to be my next choice.

I am considering buying a MacBook Pro (2020) hoping to use my iMac27 as a screen.

2020-10-16 Thread Marcus Harris
Hello WAMUGERS,

I have an Apple 27 inch iMac iMac10,1 Intel Core 2 Duo Speed:3.06 GHz
1 Processor: 2Cores: L2 Cache:3 MB Memory: 8 GB Graphics-ATI Radeon HD 4670,
256 MB Storage 2TB HD
System Software macOS Sierra 10.13.6

It’s getting pretty slow now as it’s 11 years old and I think it may soon fail.
macOS Sierra is the limit for it’s system capability.

But the screen is fine for my daily work.

I am considering buying an advertised MacBook Pro (2020) with a quad-core Intel
processor and Magic Keyboard.
8th-generation quad-core Intel core i5 processor with Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
8 GB Ram 256GB SSD

Will I be able to plug it into my iMac 27 thereby using her as my desktop
screen?

If not then what is the next best option suggestion to allow me to plug into
her screen?
Perhaps this is a crazy idea!

BY THE WAY, I use my Mac for writing essays, for spreadsheets, organising my
photos , reference browsing and emailing. Nothing high end anymore as I’m now
77.

I recently bought an iBookPro 12 with pencil for streaming, taking photos,
reading and sketching. It’s a great Apple product.

Regards

Re: Music

2020-06-29 Thread Marcus Harris
Hi Pete,
This made me very curious.
So I went to iTunes and selected Music >“Store”
There music is sold. For example, Neil Young “Home Grown “ album for $19.99.
Or one can also buy individual tunes for $2.99.
Are you convinced that buying these tunes/albums has no extra benefit than
streaming from Apple Music.
I am going to try and stick some of my bought music onto a thumb drive tomorrow
and see if it plays on another non Apple device.
Cheers
Marcus

Having read this, I now see that what I bought from iTunes has no extra benefit
to an Apple Music Subscription.
I guess I paid good money for no extra benefit.

Hi Pete,
Is that correct if you buy music using iTunes, ie pay hard money for it vs
renting through Apple Music?

Yes Ronni ,I thought that was the case.

Re: Extending win to cover black spots

2020-05-24 Thread Marcus Harris
Hi again, Robin, Peter H and Peter C,
I believe it would be fairly difficult for me to run a LAN line to the rear of
my apartment because of the layout.
Therefore the consensus seems to be to purchase a Netgear Orbi mesh Wifi
Extender.
I checked for retailers and they see to be readily available.
There are three offers and it looks like Home Mesh WiFi System 3-Pack (RBK23)
is the choice.
Thanks for the help.
I will let you know after purchase how much better the wifi works out.
Thanks again

Extending win to cover black spots

2020-05-21 Thread Marcus Harris
Hello all at WAMUG,

I live in a two storey apartment and I am connected to the NBN and my provider
is iiNET.

My router/modem is a TP Link Archer VR 1600v— AC 1600 Wireless Dual Band

It is connected at the front door and broadcasts wifi ok to the middle of both
levels but not to the rear of the either level

I decided to search for wireless range extenders and then came across power
line adapter kits.
I found both items made by TP Link and available locally off the shelf.

My query is in parts.
Would those using range extenders recommend I buy one? And would it be a TP
Link model again?
And then, would a powerline adaptor of a wireless range extender be the better
choice.

Re: Too many passwords

For my twenty cents worth. I use Apple passwords for something like a social
club but not for banking or broking. But I suspect even that’s over cautious as
the master pass is the one to access the Apple device. Once in the Mac or iPad
I should only need take care not to use a stranger’s wifi to bank.

Re: Unfortunate installation of Mojave on iMac

2018-11-03 Thread Marcus Harris
Hello Again Peter,
I restarted the iMac with Command R only.
This time I was able to instal High Sierra on the internal Drive (which wasn’t
locked) and so far everything is OK.
Now to back up from Time Machine.
Thanks for your input

Re: Unfortunate installation of Mojave on iMac

2018-11-02 Thread Marcus Harris
Thanks Peter,
I followed your procedure, however the internal master drive now named OSX Base
System is locked. There’s no obvious way to unlock and instal MacOS this way.
By restarting using the backup external drive I can see OSX Base System drive
as completely empty and First Aid read AOK.
Can I unlock it somehow using Disc Utility?
In a folder marked System sub folder CDIS there are possible ways to unlock and
instal OSX, but I’m wary of trying without some more advice.

Unfortunate installation of Mojave on iMac

2018-11-01 Thread Marcus Harris
Hello Wamugers,
This has possibly been answered before, if so please repeat again.
Without taking proper care I seem to have semi- installed Mojave on my iMac
which is limited to operate on High Sierra.
I have OS 10.13.6 on a back up start up disk, so I have been able to use that
to get my iMac running.
How may I reinstall OS 10.13.6 on the internal HD, which is now known as OSX
Base System and devoid of any installed software?
I have a separate HD which is the Time Machine.
It’s a 2009 dual core iMac with 8Gb Ram
Many thanks in advance

Thanks to everyone who responded to my query.
My 2009 iMac is still running very well on MacOS High Sierra, therefore I’ll
hang on for another year to Upgrade the hadware.
It’s a credit to Apple that aniMac just runs and runs with free upgrades.

I’m uncertain if I may upgrade my 2009 iMac 27 from High Sierra to Mojave..and
is there a benefit.

Take Control Series New Release

2018-05-16 Thread Marcus Harris
Hi WAMUGers,
For those interested, Take Control publisher Joe Kissell has written more than
60 books about technology, including many popular Take Control books. He also
runs Interesting Thing of the Day <https://itotd.com/> and is a contributing
editor of TidBITS and a senior contributor to Macworld.

He sent me this email.

I’ve just updated my book Take Control of Apple Mail
<https://alt.cc/mail-up-info> to its fourth edition, which now covers Mail in
High Sierra, Sierra, and iOS 11. Among the hundreds of changes in the new
edition are descriptions of the current workings of gestures, addressing,
Markup, Handoff, and many other features. It also has updated recommendations
for third-party plugins; helpful hints for filtering and finding messages;
instructions for backing up, restoring, and importing email; suggestions for
making attachments work better (both as sender and recipient), and updated
troubleshooting tips. And it has has greatly expanded coverage of using Apple
Mail on an iPhone or iPad.

I’m certainly not involved with Joe but I do buy his E books. They usually cost
about $20 each.

Re: Anti virus software

2018-04-17 Thread Marcus Harris
Well, this is interesting as I haven’t used antivirus since buying my first
Apple Mac in 1986.
I thought the regular security updates from Apple were enough.
Presumably if one wasn’t SPAM aware a virus or similar could corrupt the
system, otherwise do we really need AV?

It’s entitled “The Trillion Dollar Mark could still be in Reach”
It’s still online by googling “Jack Hough Apple".

With all that capital and all that brain power, I often wonder why there’s been
nothing really adventurous in Apple Hardware since the iOS devices were

And you would think that a Mac would have a touch screen by now. What’s
