Good morning,
I’m disappointed to have missed out on the meeting last night. The agenda
contained a great variety of topics of interest.

I hope those who didn’t ignore their meeting reminders ‍, found it valuable.

Re: [WAMUG] iPad WiFi connectivity

Hello Walter,

Are you using Apple Mail on the iPad, or something else, Gmail for example. I
don’t have an answer, but thought it might help clarify for others.

One solution is for you to buy me an overseas ticket, Europe would be nice, and
I can test the iPad out over there. :-)

Re: [WAMUG] Recording a video of my screen

2023-02-21 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
Hello Walter,

I’m using VLC Version 3.0.18 Vetinari (Intel 64bit) on an iMac running Ventura
13.2.1

I don’t often have a need to use it, but it’s worked for me today with good
conversion from a big sized .mov to a much more emailable .m4v with
consequential of loss of quality.

Re: [WAMUG] Recording a video of my screen

2023-02-20 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
Mike, like you, I took a while to find the Stop button up on the Menu bar at
the top of the screen so wanted to Trim the movie. I found it was easy to do
without using iMovie by selecting the movie in the Finder. Then the preview
pane on the right side has some options down the bottom, including Trim. Using
that I was able to move the slider along like you do in an iOS, to remove the
extra shots.

I will see if my recipients can view the .mov file. If not, I know iMovie can
Export at .mp4 and other formats.

VLC Player also exports as .m4v

Tim

[WAMUG] Recording a video of my screen

2023-02-20 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
Good morning,

I am wanting to record what I am seeing on my screen. I can do a screenshot
using command shift 4 but that is a single moment.

The context is that I am an admin of a Facebook group and want to show other
admins how to find various things.

I could set up my iPad and point it at the screen, but this seems rather
cumbersome. Does anyone know of a way of doing this?

Thanks

[WAMUG] Lurker unmasked

2023-02-07 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
Thanks for welcoming me onto the Zoom WAMUG meeting tonight. Nice to put faces
to names.

I’ve run Apple products since….. oh way back well before the turn of the
century. Probably around 1987 and been a WAMUG participant for a long time, but
never attended a WAMUG zoom meeting before.

- Did I learn some things tonight. Yes.
- Was it a worthwhile hour of my life? Yes.
- Will I dial in again? Yes.
- Was it all far too technical? Far from it. Friendly helpful and interesting
hearing how other people have the same simple challenges as I do.

Cheers to the hosts and the participants.

[WAMUG] Splitting iPhoto library connected to iCloud

2023-01-23 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
Good afternoon.

I’m using Ventura 13.2, the latest software on a 2017 iMac. I have a 180Gb
iPhoto library connected to iCloud and am reaching the 200Gb limit. I don’t
want to purchase more data from iCloud and want to split off library into
separate libraries. All photos are also stored on my computer, then backed up
with Time Machine and also onto two separate disks using Carbon Copy Cloner.

I have found the way to create a new library, but when I try to import photos
from the large library, I am blocked access as it is being shared with iCloud.

My thought is that I stop the sharing with iCloud, then import the photos.
Reconnect the original library to iCloud and delete them.

Any tips or links to useful tutorials that are written to be relevent to things
such as Shared Libraries available since Ventura would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

Re: [WAMUG] Updating Apple Terms and Conditions - Ventura 13.1

2023-01-23 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
Thanks for the tip Daniel.

The solution was to log out of iCloud. This included making sure iPhoto had
completed the syncing with iCloud. Once logged out, I turned the computer off
for a few minutes to settle iCloud down.

On restart, I was able to log back into iCloud as per normal and the annoying
message went away. Whilst about it, I updated to OSX13.2 at the same time.

Appreciate your tips.

Regards

Tim

Re: [WAMUG] Updating Apple Terms and Conditions - Ventura 13.1

2023-01-23 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
Thanks Daniel

I think I did that, sorry I didn’t add that to the list; it’s been a trial. I
might not have turned the computer off whilst signed out of iCloud so will try
that another day. iCloud seems to be working despite me needing to agree to the
T & C.

There is a popup that flashes up far too quick to read, but some clever people
have done a screen recording with Quicktime and have been able to freeze frame
it. The message says “Server Error iCloud could not be activated because of a
server error. Please try again.”

Tim

[WAMUG] Updating Apple Terms and Conditions - Ventura 13.1

2023-01-23 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
Hello,

Apple System Settings is requesting I have read and agreed to new iCloud Terms
and Conditions.

I have scrolled to the bottom of the very very long terms and conditions,
clicked my agreement in the little box and then “Agree”. I have done this many
times, and left it sitting for a few minutes so it thinks I have read it all!
As if….

I AM able to agree to the new terms and conditions on several other devices,
all iOS.

Checking various Apple forums, I have had no success with:

- Restarted Finder.
- Restarted the machine.
- Creating a new admin account and logging into iCloud.
- Restarted in Safe Mode
- Removed some cache items in ~Library

The increasingly annoying message still remains. Both user accounts on this
machine are affected.

Any other tips would be appreciated.

Hi, I know this is not strictly mac related, but it is about webs site
hosting mac a product from Reunion family tree application on The Next
   Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding (TNG).
I have had a family tree website for many years hosted by Webcity which
were taken over by Vodien Internet Solutions, based in Singapore around
   mid 2020.
On 1 Jan 2023 I noticed my site was down and thought it may be related
to the change of the year so I let it go before notifying them on the
3rd. Since then they have managed to get the website up intermittently
   about 3 or 4 times.
(I registered my Domain name with Crazy Domains and in mid 2020 I
received notification that they would be transferring their operation
to Dreamscape Networks International, based in Singapore, but still
   operating under the same name.)
As the website was continually off line I thought I would contact Crazy
Domains to See if there was anything wrong with my Domain registration,
which may have explained why the site was not working,. The technician
there was able to access my website and everything that had been
happening since I lodged my complaint with Vodien. (I subsequently
found out they are the same company.)
Any way it seems he knew what was wrong and told me to get in touch
with auDA as there was nothing, they could or were allowed to do.
I had never heard of the auDA, but they are a non profit .au Domain
Adminstration that oversees the operation and management framework of
the .au domain on the internet.
Apparently they advised Vodien on 19 Dec 2022 that a Ph ishing scam
impersonating the America First Credit Union was trying to acquire
account numbers and passwords, they gave Vodien 72 hours to fix it and
when they didn’t’ they blocked the website with a message to them
serverHold DNS abuse. They said Phishing had been reported by, various
   organisation.
auDa had to tell me what to tell Vodien what the problem was and how to
   fix the problem.
So Vodien did that and the website came back up and went back down
   again.
Then then said to fix it they would need to go back to a September back
up, reinstall it and everything will be working fine after that . They
did that and the same problem is persisting, the website is down.
So I asked them a couple of days ago, were they going to seriously
attempt to fix the problem, expedite it to a senior member so I can get
the service I require and what compensation I will be receiving?
They came back with, they had moved it up the chain and the senior
engineer recommended that I authorise them migrating the website to a
new server for free. I asked them what is the benefit of going to the
new server. They replied that the new server has been securely updated
and is free of any problems. They also offered 3 months extension of my
   current contract for free.
Has anyone had any similar issues? Or has anyone with any knowledge of
hosting any suggestions as to whether it is a good idea to move to the
   new server or not? (I presume if I don’t, I won’t have a website.)
Finally can anyone recommend a family tree friendly host service,
(possibly Australian based), for when I almost certainly choose to
   move?
   Thanks
   Matt.

[WAMUG] Mac Book Pro Late 2013 for parts

2023-01-19 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
Good morning

Apple Centre Perth diagnosed a failed logic board in my Mac Book Pro Late 2013.
I have removed the SSD and will keep it.

The remainder of the unit, and charger, are available for free to anyone on
this list.

The screen suffers from delamination of the anti reflective coating but I used
a plastic cover over it with reasonable success and found it quite viewable.
Keyboard functions normally.
Casing is reasonably neat and tidy.

I live in Beverley, south of York, north of Brookton, but travel to Perth
sometimes and could arrange a meet up if you’re needing this machine. Or you
cover postage costs.

Regards

Tim

Re: [WAMUG] Macbook Pro 2013 Retia 13" - Battery suspect

2022-11-10 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
I took the same model into AppleCentre Perth when it no longer started up.

After testing, they politely declared it dead. ‍

I removed the back to remove the SSD and the batteries aren’t all in one block
and are glued in. Mine is of no real value to me so contact me privately if
you’d like to make use of it. Batteries are not swollen, and have a little life
in them.

I live in Beverley.

Re: [WAMUG] Decision time: MacBook Pro battery

2022-09-28 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
Thanks as always Daniel for your response

I tried the SMC reset by holding down the power button for ten seconds, then a
normal restart push. No change.

It is a late 2013 Retina. The anti reflective coating has gone off the screen
but a plastic film has resurrected it and I can work with it as it is.

The $299 was the price Apple gave me on the service website. It did say
‘estimate’ 

The PC software I use from Time to time is Oziexplorer for digital mapping. I
have satisfactory alternatives, but don’t want to give it up if I don’t have to

The other is Peugeot workshop manual and OBD2 port reader software. This is
pretty handy to have to read and reset engine codes and I have hardware that
goes with it so am reluctant to give it up.

I’ll check out my other options as you’ve suggested and will contact you off
list for second hand machines if I need to go that path.

Thanks again

[WAMUG] Decision time: MacBook Pro battery

2022-09-28 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
Good morning

A1502 late 2013 MacBook Pro. Still suitable for purpose.

Couple of days ago I got a ‘service required’ warning saying the battery was at
the end of its life. Now the machine won’t start up, even if the power supply
is plugged in. Interestingly the power charger brick is not at all warm,
indicating no charge going in but the little orange light on the magnetic plug
is on.

Apple website estimates $299 to replace the battery. A new M2 costs $2000

I use VMware Fusion to run two native PC apps and it works as I require so I’m
hesitant to upgrade in case that stops functioning.

Do I just get the battery replaced or replace the machine?. I have a feeling
it’s no longer supported for OSX upgrades.

Wise thoughts appreciated.

Re: [WAMUG] Gmail - a cautionary tale

2022-09-06 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
   Thanks Peter,

A forum guided me to lodge a request at
[1]https://bit.ly/2TvIp6U which I have done and I will see if they can
   resurrect my account.

What tricked me was through the deletion process it kept warning me I
was going to lose my Workspace Business Starter account. I thought yep
   - that’s what I want I don’t want one of those.Not realising they
had changed my status into a business and foisted this new thing onto
me and they were referring to what I thought was my personal account.

   We will see what happens.

Very useful advice, even though it’s cost you a lot to discover it.
I too discovered some time ago that the only way to avoid confusion
and distress with dealing with anything Google online is to have a
Google email address, even if you never use it for any other reason
than for logging into Google-based sites.
It also helps with other websites which offer OAuth access, ie, they
allow you to create an account ot login using a Google account email
address. Much easier if that address ends in .[6]gmail.com.

Re: [WAMUG] Sharing contacts with two users on one computer

2022-08-31 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
Thanks Daniel,

That’s been working, but the unintended consequences seem to be the image for
the users login ends up matching too.

Logging into the other users iCloud account seems to be the trigger for this.
We’ve got quite a few devices so proving my theory isn’t foolproof.

[WAMUG] Sharing contacts with two users on one computer

2022-08-31 Thread Tim Law via WAMUG
Hello,

Calendar works nicely to allow the viewing of different calendars from two
users using different iCloud accounts on the one computer.

But Contacts does not work this same way, and is quite clunky to get working.
There’s also unintended consequences of being logged into two AppleID which
seems to be required to view another persons contacts.

Is there an easy solution?

Ta
Tim
