Hi Peter,

I thought I would post some history of the NBN battle that I and 272,716
supporters have been fighting for over three years.

You have FTTH / FTTP (Fibre to the Premises).
We have been fighting for FTTP - to change Malcolm Turnbull's decision of FTTN
(Fibre to the Node)
Get Malcolm Turnbull to reverse his decision of FTTN back to FTTP for over
three years!

Three (3) years ago I was one of the first 1,000 people to sign Nick Paine's
Online Petition and have since made contributions to raise funds for
advertising to help get the point heard that FTTP is a far superior NBN for the
future that FTTN.

“11 MAY 2016 — It’s a mess - political jabs continue among both parties over
the NBN rollout. But there’s no clear direction for improving our internet
access.

Australian business is suffering, local schools can’t get online - we need a
commitment to improving this!”

Re: NBN providers

2016-05-15 Thread Peter Crisp
Hi Ronni, thanks for your lengthy response here below. I hope you and others
don't mind this thread being of non-Mac specifics though I suspect others
leveraging off your obvious well founded technical input here.

Anyway, yes you're right the stock standard Westnet base offer is a Netphone
(not a fibre phone) and I see with your notes below I can think further which
way we prefer to go at home.

Your first question "is my NBN FTTP or FTTN". I'm sorry I don't have a clue how
to answer this. It has just been installed up to the house outer wall and the
interior installation is yet to happen. Is the FTTP or FTTN a function of the
hardware inside or outside the house or a function of the plan I select (which
I am yet to decide on) or both or something else altogether? Sorry I am just
dipping my toe into this and don't have much to go on.

Regards

Pete

Re: NBN providers

2016-05-14 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Walter,

Changing to a faster download/upload speed plan should improve the situation.
I went from my original plan 20GB+20GB - 25/5Mbps turbo pack + Fibre Phone
to Residential 8 plan 100GB + 100GB - 50/20Mbps turbo pack + Fibre Phone.

I would still like faster... but I have never experienced any buffering when
streaming movies on ATV4.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Peter,

Is your NBN FTTP? I’m assuming it is, but I don’t think you have mentioned if
it is FTTP or FTTN.

My comments in situ below.

Send the link in the ‘Westnet blurb’ please…. I think you might be referring to
Netphone?

Your Time Capsule is your Wi-Fi Wireless Network.
Plug the Time Capsule WAN port with an ethernet cable CAT-6 into the UNI-D 1 of
the NBN NTD that will be installed on your wall and off you go.

The TC does all the routing for you. No need for extra modems etc etc.

NO
What is the key difference between Netphone and Fibre Phone?

The main difference between Netphone and Fibre Phone is that Netphone runs over
your broadband connection, and Fibre Phone uses the Voice port on the NBN box.
Netphone VoIP service means your phone calls will need to travel through one of
the UNI-D ports.

The Fibre Phone service has battery backup (so will work in a power outage) and
is the closest thing to the copper telephone line of today.
Since Netphone relies on your broadband connection being available, it will not
work in a power outage.

* Fibre Phone does not require a VoIP ATA (like a BoB) and instead is
registered through the NBN NTD, unlike Netphone.
* Fibre Phone comes with dedicated bandwidth meaning calls do not have to
contend with internet traffic, unlike Netphone.

* Fibre Phone is battery backed up and usable in the event of a power outage,
unlike Netphone.
* Fibre Phone can only be used at the premises via the supplied hardware.

Re: NBN providers

2016-05-14 Thread FW
Hi Ronni,

Just another NBN question.
We have been on an iiNet NBN FTTP 25/100 plan plus Fibre phone since April 2014.
It works well except when streaming european TV channels on IPTV in the evening
(no problem watching SBS-On-Demand movies). Despite the NBN connection the
network seems to be overloaded in the evening (too much buffering to enjoy).
Would a change to a faster download speed (50/100) improve the situation ?
iiNet is happy to upgrade but won’t guarantee anything.

Thanks Ronni

Cheers
Walter

Hi Ronni, two further questions if I may ask.

It seems from your configuration, you plugged your Airport Time Capsule
directly to the NBN hardware unit (NTD). I see in the Westnet blurb they
indicate some may need a Wifi modem. I have a 3TB Time Capsule and wonder do I
need the "wifi modem" they're indicating? I suspect not.

The Westnet plans also indicate a Netphone service is provided - using my
regular phone. Is this the same as the fibre phone you've got and what are the
differences if any? I wish to keep my landline number as you did too.

In fairness to Westnet, My NBN connection was in the very early days... I was
one of Westnet/iiNet first connections from ADSL to NBN.

So yes, some mistakes were made in the early days and mine almost got me to
file a 'Breach Of Contract' with them as they had failed to fulfill all of its
contractual obligations.
The problem was sorted...

Thanks for that Ronni, it would be frustrating to find out they
"loose" your phone number and that is enough to put people off it. It
should be military precision as this is their core business managing
peoples affairs like this!

The jury is getting closer to a decision ...

  Hi Peter,
I have been on NBN Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) with Westnet/iiNet
since April 2014. NBN RESIDENTIAL 8 PLAN (100GB + 100GB) + 50/20MBPS
+ FIBRE PHONE)$74.95 + $19.95 = $94.90 mth.
I chose Fibre Phone so I could keep my current landline phone number I
have had for “Ever” ;-)
After the NBN guys  completed the laying of cable to my house and
installing of the NBN Fibre Wall Outlet, NBN Power Supply Unit & NTD
(Network Termination Device) in my house it was very quick and easy
for me to connect my equipment and get my Network connected and
activated.
_MY NBN FTTP SETUP:_ _Equipment_:  3TB Airport Time Capsule (4th
Generation) and Oricom eco5200 phone
_Connections_: 3TB Airport Time Capsule (4th Generation) connected via
Ethernet CAT-6 cable from Time Capsule WAN port to UNI-D 1 Port on NTD
(Network Termination Device), and my Oricom eco5200 Phone cable to
UNI-V 1 Port on NTD.
Checked my Dual-Band Network settings - Router Mode: DHCP and NAT
remained the same and checked all my Macs (3), iPad & iPhone
connected. Ran Speed tests and generally tested my Network
thoroughly… all worked well.
_WESTNET’S ACTIONS WERE:_ 1. Wait to confirm the NBN service is
fully working
 2. Cancel the ADSL service, and wait 2-3days for your ADSL codes to
drop off your phone line. NB We wont cancel the home phone (as we need
the number active to port it)
 3. When the codes are dropped, we will then submit a request to
convert you home number into a VOIP number. Process takes 5-7 biz
days.
 4. Then you will have the exact same number, as a VOIP number and no
one will know the difference.
Other than a mishap that caused Westnet to LOOSE  my phone number
(for a month or so) when they went to port it... Eventually my phone
number was located held in quarantine by Telstra… now that’s a
story in itself that I won’t bore you with!!! I haven’t
experienced any problems. I’m relatively pleased with the speeds
I’m downloading and uploading at - of course speed is never fast
enough for us ;-) Over my Airport Wi-Fi Network I achieve around these
speeds:  _DOWNLOAD SPEED 47.73MBPS - UPLOAD SPEED 19.20MBPS_

Westnet/iiNet rate VERY poorly in online reviews of their NBN service

Optus and Westnet both rate well and a bit dearer that Westnet.

Anyone here got any first hand transition experience from ADSL to NBN

I'd rather not change my email address if I can help it too.

Re: NBN providers

2016-05-13 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Peter,

I have been on NBN Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) with Westnet/iiNet since April
2014.
NBN Residential 8 Plan (100GB + 100GB) + 50/20Mbps + Fibre Phone)$74.95 +
$19.95 = $94.90 mth.
I chose Fibre Phone so I could keep my current landline phone number I have had
for “Ever” ;-)

After the NBN guys completed the laying of cable to my house and installing of
the NBN Fibre Wall Outlet, NBN Power Supply Unit & NTD (Network Termination
Device) in my house it was very quick and easy for me to connect my equipment
and get my Network connected and activated.

My NBN FTTP Setup:
Equipment: 3TB Airport Time Capsule (4th Generation) and Oricom eco5200 phone
Connections: 3TB Airport Time Capsule (4th Generation) connected via Ethernet
CAT-6 cable from Time Capsule WAN port to UNI-D 1 Port on NTD (Network
Termination Device), and my Oricom eco5200 Phone cable to UNI-V 1 Port on NTD.

Checked my Dual-Band Network settings - Router Mode: DHCP and NAT remained the
same and checked all my Macs (3), iPad & iPhone connected. Ran Speed tests and
generally tested my Network thoroughly… all worked well.

Westnet’s actions were:
1. Wait to confirm the NBN service is fully working

2. Cancel the ADSL service, and wait 2-3days for your ADSL codes to drop off
your phone line.
NB We wont cancel the home phone (as we need the number active to port it)

3. When the codes are dropped, we will then submit a request to convert you
home number into a VOIP number.
Process takes 5-7 biz days.

4. Then you will have the exact same number, as a VOIP number and no one will
know the difference.

Other than a mishap that caused Westnet to loose my phone number (for a month
or so) when they went to port it...
Eventually my phone number was located held in quarantine by Telstra… now
that’s a story in itself that I won’t bore you with!!!
I haven’t experienced any problems.
I’m relatively pleased with the speeds I’m downloading and uploading at - of
course speed is never fast enough for us ;-)
Over my Airport Wi-Fi Network I achieve around these speeds:
Download Speed 47.73Mbps - Upload Speed 19.20Mbps

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: NBN providers

Yes, it is certainly a viable option - to do nothing. "ADSL1 Plus" is
good enough for online streaming through Apple TV or Youtube so the
only real benefit to go NBN is if downloading large files quickly is
important to you.

Jury still out on this.

Re: NBN providers

2016-05-13 Thread petercrisp

Thanks for that Susan, will review and consider. I am wary of quoted
speeds when they say "up to 25Mbps" and the "up to" bit I see as an
'out' for them when you don't actually experience the quoted speed. So
you have to up the ante and go to a faster plan. So the bargain
priced service you thought you were getting is eroded by having to up
spec to next level or two levels up.
