Gary Cooper did this in Sergeant York (1941) I always figured that's where it
came from. A guy like Goober would defiantly imitate Gary Cooper shoot he
could walk like Chester, talk like Edward G Robinson and imitate Cary Grant he
might as well shoot like Gary Cooper.

In the episode Opie and the Carnival,Opie,Andy, and Goober all take turns

his tongue and then rubs his thumbagainst the sight.Anyone know why
Ithink that wetting the sight is supposeto cut down on the glare off the
sight. I don't know this for sure, because I'm just a housewife and not
a teacher or Sheriff :)

Thank you Harriet, of all days today I needed the laugh.
I rarely watch the Academy Awards because, in my opinion, much of the voting is
based on popularity or sympathetic roles, but I do try to watch the segment
called In Memoriam where they show the names of people who have passed away
in the last year. I did catch this year's show, assuming they
Regarding Opie The Carnival when Goober wet his front gun sight, he must

from the movie. Wetting your front sight was a pretty common practice for
shooting in low-light situiations. Being wet made it glisten a
I worked with people who went to high school with Andy in Mount Airy. One guy
was named Johnny Paul Beasley. A coincidence? He went by his middle name. Paul
Beasley said that Andy always said, Paul Beasley stole Angie Montgomery from

Tonight while watching Aunt Bee's Medicine Man, I noticed something I had not
noticed before. After she sings and excuses herself to the kitchen, she walks
in front of Andy and Barney, who just came in the front door. We are to assume
she goes into the kitchen because we hear something fall and
As far as Goober wetting his gun sights, if you ever watch the 1941 movie
Sergeant York, Gary Cooper, playing Alvin C. York does the same thing. When
they ask him why he does it, he says it cuts down on the glare. I guess that
would take away any shine on the front sight. Orville Hendricks
