Floyd the barber was seen on Peter Gunn show sunday evening. The whole show
was about him robbing a bank holding the million dollars in order to get a

For those who have not discovered this Old Time Radio Western channel. You

I've been enjoying watching "The George Burns & Gracie Allen Show" every
weekday morning on Antenna TV. Howard McNear (our lovable Floyd) played
Cuthbert Jantzen, the Burns' plumber who was a widower with 4 college age
daughters. Sort of a role reversal for Floyd, playing opposit
Stumbled upon a major Howard McNear find on a YouTube Gunsmoke episode entitled
Festus Aunt Thede - he portrays a fidgety, befuddled shop owner named
Howard-playing the Floyd role to perfection!
As a bonus, Frank Cady ( Otis' cellmate in The Rehabilitation of Otis) plays
the role of a mean old

Was that
just due to tje fact that the programs were produced by DESILU??
No, Mayberry hadn't even been invented yet when Howard McNear made that
appearance on Lucy. It's entirely possible, however, there were people who
worked on both shows who were friends with each other
I once read an interview with Andy Griifith and he said what made
Floyd so funny to them, is because Howard McNear wasn't acting when he
portrayed Floyd-he was ACTUALLY like that.

I saw Howard McNear on The Leave Leave It To Beaver show playing,of all
things,a barber and giving Wally his first
shave at the request of Ward Cleaver. He also played a real estate agent on The
Ozzie And Harriet Show. Can anyone tell me why the Taylors had

Ken, Susan, and Bob,
I agree! It would be awesome to see Jack Benny on an episode of TAGS. Seeing
him get a ticket for speeding or jay-walking would be priceless.
I don't think I've ever seen Jack in a scene with Don Knotts. Does anyone know
if they ever acted together?
You know, most of
Ken, I agree with you! I haven't seen a Hollywood movie in the theatre
since Mamma Mia. I, too, prefer the old classics like The Ghost and Mr.

amazing what a versatile actor Don Knotts was. How wonderful it is that

Just listening to the old time radio internet station today and who should I

Dear Mayberry Folks,
I think we should not talk about Howard McNear's disability due to his stroke;
picking it apart step by step. Frankly, I don't think it is very nice.
We should remember what a dear man Howard and his character were. He was a
trouper who gave his best until the very
HistoryBuff, you are so right!
I always loved Floyd as a character - especially in the Gay Deceiver episode.
But as Howard McNear, I admire and love the man who had such professionalism
and courage to continue to contribute so much to our favorite show.

I may be a lone voice here, but I think Howard McNear did a darn fine job right
through his final TAGS episode. It bothers me to hear so much talk of how sad
and how poor his speech had become. Everything is relative, and maybe we should
celebrate the fact that his professionalism and pride
Just watching the SCTV season one DVD recently, which features Eugene Levy
lovingly doing his amazing impression of Floyd the Barber, makes me see how
far-reaching TAGS's influence is. The combination of Merv Griffin and Andy

quite a bit like Howard McNear. That's one of the most hilarious

I was watching If I Had a Quarter-Million and when Barney calls to
Fred in the hotel (Fred!), it sure sounds a lot like Howard McNear's
voice. Floyd was in the episode after all. Maybe Floyd had a brother
named Fred who worked at the hotel?

Tom Kessel mentioned The Big Circus with Howard McNear. Dave and I love
finding this movie by accident on TV, and we take a break from whatever
we're doing (What were you doing?) to watch Howard in a stellar
performance. Howard was Floyd no matter what movie or tv appearance he was
in - I think
, the actor Howard McNear
used this as an opportunity to add more depth to the character-notice his
gravelly, sometimes slurred vocal diction and the quirky timing and delivery of
his lines! Also it seems Floyd's thinking is more abstract and mysterious than
before, making his character truly unique
I often wondered which Floyd left the most memorable impression for us fans.pre

impersonaters and followers are remembering him after his 62 stroke.to me and I

I recently watched the Elvis Presley movie Blue Hawaii and the man who ran

I was watching the movie Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. One of those not
so good Irwin Allen films. I had watched it before but I guess I never
noticed that the penny pinching Congressman was none other than our Howard.

I was listening to a old radio show called The Six Shooter (1953) which

Hello all,
While browsing at our local library a few days ago I ran across a set of
audio tapes of classic radio shows. They looked interesting so I checked them
out. One episode of a show called Suspense featured DeForrest Kelly from Star
Trek. While listening to the episode I kept
I turned on a movie last night ... one of the witnesses during the trial was
a Doctor, who I'm reasonably sure was TAGS own Floyd. He was only onscreen
for about
15 to 30 seconds.

That had to be Otto Preminger's Anatomy of a Murder (1959), and yes, that was
our beloved Howard McNear
I enjoyed the article, also. They did forget his 2nd most famous TV
role: when Wally Cleaver decided to act the big shot and show his
friends he's shaving Ward decides to help him and gets the local barber
(played by H McNear) to give him a real old fashioned shave. He shaved
the lather and

The man appears to be Howard McNear or Floyd himself. Once this episode
taped close to his stroke? Perhaps Howard could not speak at that time.
