I've had an email purporting to come from PayPal. It reads as follows:

Appologies for the OT but I recall discutions on this problem a while back.
My LACIE external hard drive sounds as if it's all loose and sandy inside
ans will of course not read - I remember something about freezing the
hard drive in a frezzer and thus being able to retrieve data from it.
I get quite a few of these every week - from PayPal, eBay, CitiBank,
SunBank, USBank, etc. Needless to say, I don't even have accounts
at most of the banks, and I get these messages at email addys not
even registered with those I *do* have accounts with.
When I get those claiming to be from
Thanks Tom.
I had in fact looked at their site before I got your email and forwarded it
to them at spoof. I've had a reply as you did. Nice to know someone takes
some notice! I've sent similar notes to other companies and had sweet F.A.

This is a fraud. They get your credit details like this.

Stephen,
The reason is that, unless he has a direct connection to the 'Net (T1, T3,
etc.), ultimately the traffic has to go from his personal SMTP server
through his ISP's server, **using his ISP account**. That last is the key.
His ISP in such a case is acting as a mail relay, and that's what
Maybe I'm missing something (or didn't read the articles I linked well
enough), but why would Zhao's ISP matter if he were using his own SMTP
server to send the mail from?
I think Scott's reply answered that one... in other words Zhao, what
ever you use for your ISP email address (prolly
Gerrie,
I've actually done this before and had success in getting the files off
the HD after the freeze. I froze it for 3 hours, while I prepared
another PC to accept that drive as a slave. As soon as I took it out of
the freezer, I slaved it to the other PC, booted and began copying... be
Most of the phishing emails I get are pretty obvious, bad English being
the most common indicator, but a few of them have been pretty funny. One
embedded a form where the first field was Social Security number.
Another one I got just yesterday informed me of fradulent activity in my

Thanks Todd - found that and it's much bigger than I expected! I've only
got 155 names and addresses (no extra notes or anything) 41 Tasks with just
an action date, yet the file is over 42 Meg!!
Good job I have a CD burner!

Usually Outlook buries them in your profile. What I do is export the whole
kit and caboodle to a pst file then you can either set the new computer to
wherever you place that file (I use a folder on my D drive instead of the
default) or you can import them when you setup your new box.

Just out of curiosity, Peter, why not do it the easy way? When I upgrade to
a new system I just take the HD out of the old one and mount it as a slave
in the new one long enough to transfer the data I want onto the new system.
When you've got it all, and you're SURE you've got it all, then you
Well, I only told half the story! The new PC came from my son - but without
a HD. It was one he'd had lying around for some time. In our family we
cannibalise everything - except each other! I'm going to be using a very
small HD (5 Gb) to carry the Operating system and Internet access
Hi Peter -
Sounds like you are setting up a very thorough system. The only thing
that made my eyes open is when you said that you are setting up a very
small HD (5 GB) for the OS, Internet, AV, and firewall. What OS are you
going to be running? In my honest opinion, 5GB - esp. for something

Hi all,
I set up a membership form for a friend of mine that was working fine
