[libreoffice-website] [Wiki] Marking abandoned or outdated pages

2014-01-02 Thread Volker Merschmann
Hi all,

some of you (especially Dennis and Wojciech started to sort out older pages.

Two wishes from my side:

- Do not mark pages as abandoned if they are not touched for a certain
time, but try to find a proof for that. Else you can ask the last editors.

- Let us agree upon a template and category (or two/three) to put on these
pages to be recognized.

I am open for suggestions on the latter point.

In the last days I have looked at some pages in doubt. It is not always
easy to recognize if the content is in foreign language.
I was just insulted by an esparanto contributor as I moved a page about
eo-extensions from EO to
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Extensions/eo although
it was about specialties around esperanto.
He could be convinced to expand his page with some translation from the en
page.
The zsync page mentioned above is also such an example. It deals only with
the german CD/DVD distribution (LibreOfficeBox)

In my opinion we should keep the number of pages under the language
namespaces as low as possible. It is easier to find things if they are in
the multilangual structure.

1. We are just sharing the same software with Wikipedia, which is called

2. We should keep the "Template" for use on wiki-templates as this is the
standard on all MediaWikis, and to keep the entry level at height for new
editors.

For me, it makes sense the other way round. Let us keep "template" here for
the wiki templates also as a category.
So we can refer to "templates" when talking about ODF-Templates for LO/OOo.

I can not see any advantage in creating another category for the menus,
because the usage will still be "template" although the category might be
"menutemplate". Or am I wrong here?

Some more opinions please from the audience.

The browser provides the UI language.

The first thing which has to be done in advance is, that the wiki has
to recognize the users language from the browser-indentification,
Then the request has to be forwarded to the localized page.

At the moment you are getting all in english when not logged in.

I doubt that we can use their solution.
They provide a global login (kind of single-sign-on). You register or
connect to your local wikipedia and get access to all NL-wikipedias
and connected wikis like wikiquote.
You always get a message on this fact when you log in.

[libreoffice-website] Wiki registration and spam statistics

2013-06-30 Thread Volker Merschmann
Hi,

although the month has not really ended, I would like to provide a
little statistics.

Months: June May April
New registrations: 1167448
Blocked because of spam: 21 6 0
New Users with a valid contribution: 121126

Don't beat me for accuracy, I just counted a bit on-screen and in
Calc, the wiki is not able to provide statistics like this.
A whole bunch of the usernames with "blank" registration are also
suspicious, because of incredible length or well known combination of
words and numbers. [1}

Summary:
Spam and unused registration is increasing since changing back to the
ReCaptcha. From my experience it will increase more as the information
about a wiki that is accessible will be pushed around.

Conclusion:
We should put down the ReCaptcha again.

Proposal:
For the moment we shoud re-install the questy captcha.

I have heard that there have been complaints from some language
communities about the accessibility of the wikiregistration.
But in the time I wrote this, two new users have inserted their spam
in the wiki.
We obviously can not allow this and the dirty work of blocking and
deleting prevents us from doing more useful things.

Bye

Four new suspects since yesterday, two of them put in their spam some
seconds after creating the account. That it is not much, but can
increase if more of them are getting aware of the changed login.

I have blocked very few people between last September and May. In that
time we had absolutely no problems. That was the time with the questy
capture, right? Look at the log:

I won't judge after that short time.

We tried Captchas some time ago, but the bots (or the cheap workers

spam in that time.

I have gone through the list, there are more mirrors missing 4.0

Have you checked

from your region?
In my region there was a full distribution at announcement time.

I see now that I misread you here.
At first reading I thought you would like have a non-wiki system instead.

I still do not see the WYSIWYG-editor as absolutely necessary and a
blocker for using the mediawiki further on if we do not have it.

I don't think so.

The wiki is not intended to provide information to the wide public,
but as a working tool and pinboard for the contributors inside the
community.
Many of them are able to use the wiki-syntax which is not that hard to
learn and well documented around the web.
So I do not think a WYSIWYG is mandantory for it. (We have seen some
really bad editings with the old one)

Silverstripe on the other hand is equipped with a WYSIWYG-editor and I
think this is very helpful there to attract people to work on the
content.

At this moment a backup is taken before fixing the failure. As there

But I need to be loggged in when I am administrating the wiki, e.g.
caring about spam.

And it worked before. I remember that I was able log in through https
and the login was kept although navigating to http-pages. (Didn't we
discuss that here on the list...?)

Two things:

- The wiki does not recognize my native language until I am logged in.

- I am not able to look at a users contributions while I am logged in.
Try https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Special:Log/newusers and

(Got a 500 errror with a Chrome and a white page with Firefox)

[libreoffice-website] Promoting RCs on Facebook

2012-03-07 Thread Volker Merschmann
Hi,

as already written to the marketing list:

Can the maintainer of https://www.facebook.com/libreoffice.org please
raise his hand?

I've seen again that the folder
http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/pre-releases/ has been mentioned
there to promote testing.
This is not very useful as this is a single machine to carry the load.
It is better to wait for the mirror network, which makes the
test-builds available at
http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/testing/

Thank you.

I think we should only offer two versions (3.4.5 and 3.5.0) , but
stating clearly (as we made with 3.4.0 if I remember correct) that
3.5.0 is not bugfree and more for "early adopters".

The 3.3.x should then be found under a new link named "older versions"
which points to
http://download.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/stable/

Other opinions?

As of http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgCookieExpiration this
means that it stays for the session. I understand that as it is valid
unless you close your window or change your IP.

I have changed the value to the documented default of 2592000, unless
my top-admins are recommending anything else.

Please try again.

I have just checked by logging in, starting to edit a page, waiting
two minutes and saving my work then. Worked.

If you look at your page you will actually see an error message. The
parsing of is enabled but there is actually a problem in
rendering the png.

If you have read the linked pages from mediawiki you should have noted

Did you test that? I can not see any syntax like this on the mentioned
