[libreoffice-website] Happy SysAdminDay!
Hello, happy SysAdminDay everyone! [1] Let me use this opportunity to thank everyone from the infra team for your passion, your dedication and your work throughout the year, and for all the good things you do. Thank you for keeping our machines up and running, to make sure our worldwide community can work on LibreOffice in all timezones around the globe. Especially in these times, thanks a lot for bringing us together in virtual videoconferences, so we can stay close to each other despite social distancing. Like with some other roles in the community, only a little bit of all the amazing things that happen are visible in public - the unlucky fate of the good sysadmin is they're only visible when things are not working. :-) So even more, happy hacking, keep up the good work, and hope to meet all of you in person soon! Re: [libreoffice-website] A new year and a new inconsistency between website and the TDF update service...
Hello, William Gathoye (LibreOffice) wrote on 05.02.21 at 16:09: Yes it is intentional. I was trying to show that even with 1 wk delay, as this way of proceeding is a bit weird in 2021 (cf. the Apple-esque way that releases everything in a synchronized way), you'll have people who complain/think the feature doesn't work :) you will always have people complaining about something, this one is very easy. :-) You will find people complaining we update too fast, you will find people complaining we update too slow. So, whatever you do, someone is likely to be unhappy. And good decisions are usually not based on listening only to those vocal. Which means we could tweak that update dialog and put a warning there that warns the user there is a 1wk delay between the announcement and the moment the update service made aware. Could this help in understanding the situation, do you think? If the idea behind your mail actually is to add an information about our update mechanism - worth considering. But don't think this will magically solve the problem of people being unhappy. In any case, I think this is likely more a discussion for the ESC than for the website list. As explained in our video call, the plan is to have the update triggered for micro versions (7.0.3->7.0.4 etc.) about one week after the release. For minor and major version updates (7.0->7.1 or 6.4->7.0), there is - notwithstanding the current rolling release discussion - some longer time planned in. Likely, the update from 7.0 to 7.1 will be triggered around 7.1.3 or 7.1.4. It's intentional that current users of 7.0 will not see an update for 7.1 before 7.1.3 or 7.1.4, the will get updates of 7.0.x in the meantime. Re: [libreoffice-website] TDF Jitsi instance issues with 20+ people
Hello, thanks a lot to the team for running the test and to the precious feedback received from Emiliano and others! I just talked to Cloph and will try to summarize the situation: - the VM hardware has been bumped up - it strongly looks like neither hosting nor server nor bandwith are the problem, also the traffic is normal - it very much looks like the client is the problem - I proposed to verify the results with a test in the official Jitsi Meet instance, to see if this has the same problems, although I'm not sure that in the current times that is reliable For next Friday's meeting, we have several options: - We could server-side enforce the audio only mode. Whether that helps or not is unclear, as people are turning off video during the meeting anways. - As fallback we could use - talkyoo, a pure phone-based solution that served us well in the past. For dial-ins from countries that talkyoo doesn't provide a number for, there seems a workaround with Google Hangouts. This "bridging" is not convenient, but does the job. - another conferencing system Paolo is using (I don't remember the name currently) - Nextcloud Talk, as we do have a Nextcloud instance; but then, we don't have experience with the videoconferencing module Florian -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: website+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/website/ Privacy Policy: https://www.documentfoundation.org/privacy
Re: [libreoffice-website] TDF Jitsi instance issues with 20+ people
Hello, thanks a lot for bringing this up and indeed, this is something we need to fix urgently. When 15 users or more are in the meeting, Jitsi is basically unusable, while it's rock-stable for less users. Disabling video did not help. Whether the amount of users, or the combination of clients and distribution of users is relevant (Jitsi needs to mix various streams into one), I can't say. I looked at the VM during the meeting and the load was at about 8, suggesting we can pump up the virtual hardware and see how that goes. Another option is to host not at our datacenter, but at some cloud provider with different connectivity. The official Jitsi instance seems - given the amount of home office workers at the moment - rather problematic from what I've heard. The machine's connectivity should be 1 Gbit/s though, not 100 Mbit/s, but of course line congestion and peering can be a determining factor. As it's hard to test meetings with 20 people, as concrete action items I'd propose - assinging more resources to the VM -> Cloph, can you have a look? (Guilhem is on vacation right now) - finding out if there was any major spike in traffic on the VM recently -> also Cloph, can you have a look? - have someone from infra on standby during the next meeting to live debug the issues - have a fallback plan to have a proper meeting Florian -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: website+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/website/ Privacy Policy: https://www.documentfoundation.org/privacy
Re: [libreoffice-website] Changes with Chrome
Hi Guilhem, Guilhem Moulin wrote: In the past 2 years or so I've regularly run a script to upgrade baseURLs (typical case is when the operator of an old mirror silently adds TLS support). Right now 72/113 (63.71%) have an https:// base URL. Grouping by region, thanks a lot, that sounds great indeed! It's not clear to me how disruptive the change will be in practice, because we have redirects between the download page and the actual mirror. However https:// adoption is at a point where we could remove http:// base URLs without notice without causing too much disruption on the remaining mirrors nor users (except perhaps those in south Africa and Russia). I only read news articles about it, but seems that Chrome will soon start showing a warning message, later this year then blocking downloads. So if there's an easy command to disable all HTTP mirrors, check the impact, and re-enable if required, might make sense to fire that off soon. We could also test with the Chrome beta version and see how we are affected. It allows for easy access and gives a good overview of what's going on, to stay up to date on things that happen around LibreOffice and TDF at large. A summary of this is posted at the @PlanetTDF Twitter feed. That Twitter feed has been repeatedly subject of some irritation. Not all blog postings are featured due to the sheer amount of them and e.g. sometimes authors by accident chose the wrong category and then the posting gets featured by mistake. While we can correct this easily on our own Planet, when things are on social media, there's more interaction. As the Planet's main purpose is to combine content on the website and its respective RSS feed and at the same time we feature relevant postings and activities on our main TDF and LibreOffice channels, we've repeatedly received the proposal to disable the @PlanetTDF Twitter feed altogether. It simply serves no purpose on its own, but just duplicates content that was duplicated before already. ;-) I like the idea and support the proposal. Any thoughts on this? [libreoffice-website] recurring donations via Stripe
Hello, in the past days, I've received several complaints about the recurring donations via Stripe. People are claiming they didn't opt for an recurring donation, but a one-off instead, or tell that the sum is different from what they mentioned. It's not many complaints and I couldn't reproduce, so it could simply be mistakes. We had that in the past as well and it was rarely a mistake on our end. Can anyone reproduce the problem? Re: [libreoffice-website] Minutes from the Tue Sep 17 infra call
Hi, Guilhem Moulin wrote: + guilhem: would just like to agree on something that's not telegram. Brett: would just need to be as usable as telegram then I agree, that's exactly the thing. That's something many solutions badly fail at and which makes the adoption rate of proprietary messaging tools much higher. The casual user does not want to configure server, login and other things. The primary reason for looking for a messaging solution is internal use, so people are capable to add their SSO account. The blocker for me so far was that the mobile apps were not working reliably (Nextcloud) or I could not use SSO at all (Matrix/Riot). If we go for an alternative, I want it to be on TDF premises, so IRC might not be the best way to go. What we could do is to bridge a messaging tool (mobile-capable, notifications, SSO) to IRC if need be. That being said - thanks everyone for all the hard work you do, I see lots of progress in infra, happy! Hi William, William Gathoye wrote: Actually you won't risk anything since LibreOffice and libreoffice are the same handle, the Twitter website is answering both without *any* 301/302 redirection at all. hm, maybe I fail to see the problem then. :-) Why don't you just use the camel case form when referring to the account, e.g. typing @LibreOffice instead of @libreoffice? I can however understand your concern, this is why for such a question, I'll ask for a Twitter employee directly to know more about the pitfalls we could have. I am very reluctant given the past experience - our account was blocked for a nonsense reason and only a direct contact could help us out. Others were less lucky and blocked for about 30 days or more. Not sure if that still is a problem, but... Hi, Michael Wolf wrote: still a question: There is a long text to the right of the new Donate page (see www.libreoffice.org/donate or, in German, de.libreoffice.org/donate). I couldn't find this text to translate it. you mean "We're a volunteer-driven..." and "You support is vital..."? Indeed, this should be translatable. Cloph, can you take care of it? Martin Srebotnjak wrote: I think there are still two strings not translatable on Pootle from the Donate page: "Donate via Stripe" (a button near the localizable button "Donate via PayPal" under the reCaptcha). "Amount:" (the string before text field for entering the amount of bitcoins/b.cash) Agreed. I'm not sure if they can be in Pootle (but I guess so), but I remember that Mike or Cloph were asking for the localized strings to embed in the files. Cloph, can you let us know what the correct process is? I also have the following question (I raised it over a year ago, but alas): why cannot the new donate page and the new combined (stable and fresh) download page be used/turned on in the localized sites (I can only have the old separate stable and fresh download pages on the Slovenian site, and I can only have the old donate page on sl page). I don't mind the old donate page, but the combined download page is much more user-friendly. I really would like to have rolling out the new donate pages a priority. I know there is some roundtrips involved as we're regularly working on improving the sites, with new strings coming up, but I propose to take the status quo, make it localizable, and roll it out. There were some side questions wrt. currency and proposed amounts per site, that needs to be added apart from the strings, but we really should move forward with this. Cloph, is there a blocker? I know we discussed it in the past, but I don't know the current status - if we can roll out the pages soon, that'd be great indeed! :) Thanks a lot, Florian -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: website+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: https://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/website/ Privacy Policy: https://www.documentfoundation.org/privacy

Hi, Michael Wolf wrote: Yes, thank you Florian for your reminder. Six weeks have been past now since I asked to migrate the Pootle strings to the websites. The websites still do not work correctly. this is really unfortunate, apologies for that. What seems missing is to add some more strings to Pootle, Cloph will look into that tomorrow. In general, this discussion reveals we clearly need to have more shoulders to split this work on. Lots of things block on Cloph and a bus factor of 1 is never ideal and leads to long waiting times - which is also frustrating to the community, and the least thing I want is to demotivate people. I want to find a way to make the process easier, by either giving others access to Pootle and share the knowledge, or finding a different way for website localizations. It's indeed been a constant problem in the past, and we need to clearly improve here. Cloph, do you think we can publish a howto what steps are required, so we can distribute the load here to more shoulders in the future? Do you have other ideas? Ah right, I meant OS not firmware. No strong feelings, but given there is nothing from 6.43.x we're lacking, I'd say the LTS branch (6.42.x). Seconded, let's stay with the LTS version. You can upgrade both, RouterOS and the RouterBOARD firmware, in that order, makes sense IMHO. I have a family celebration that day, but feel free to poke me in case of problems - RouterOS is one of the areas I can help out if needed. :-) There were quite some changes to 6.42, so best is to run /export before and after and do a diff, just in case. The release notes give insight on what has changed, especially wrt. bridge implementation and removal of master-port, which might affect us. Can you send a follow-up to this list when this is done, so localizers can look into it? and the issue with the subsitevirtualpages not allowing to have localized title/lable. A ugly workaround would be to have the virtual page hidden and to create a site-local virtual page that then has the page from the other subsite as backend, but that's kinda ugly, I'll check whether one can extend the SubsiteVirtualPage with a data extension to have the title/navigation label translatable. Thanks a lot! And what's left is how to deal with the footer / translations - the suggestion to use the Privacy Policy (localized term for privacy policy), Imprint (localized term for imprint) is easiest to keep consistent, so I think that's the way to go. (So expect Homepage.PrivacyPolicyLabel, Homepage.ImprintLabel, to appear this week) That's my proposal indeed, see https://redmine.documentfoundation.org/issues/2564 Can you also send a follow-up to this list when this is implemented?
