Well not really a bug. Rather a hidden feature. The svg's were used occasionaly for presentations. -- In 2006 I made an updated EasyTimeline with better font support. It actually depended on a Ploticus hack that was made specifically for this purpose: Ploticus needed to return x,y positions for rendered texts so that hyperlinks (blue links texts positioned over black texts would be positioned correctly with proportional font). I tested it in cygwin and it worked. Hopefully that font metric enhancement is now part of normal Ploticus build. The new Easytimeline script got new ParseFonts proc. For several reasons I did not follow up ever since. I just uploaded the patched script to http://infodisiac.com/Wikimedia/Perl/EasyTimeline_1.15.zip in case someone is interested. Since it is very unlikely that a german user enters an 'ä' accidentally instead of an 'a', i think he can expect to be presented suggestions which start with the exact character sequence he typed. This is not the case, like the following example on de-wp shows: If you enter the characters 'fü' in the searchbox, the following suggestions appear: Fußball, Fußball-Bundesliga, Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2006, Fußballverein, Fußballtrainer, Fulda, Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft, Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2002, Fußball-Europameisterschaft 2008. Mainly lot about soccer/football (Fußball in german), its coaches and championships, and one town (Fulda). Only in the very last place, usually not visible if the user does not notice the scrollslider, he will find the word 'Fürst' (sovereign). He will not notice that there are a lot of other articles starting with this sequence: Fürth, Fürstenfeldbruck, Fürstenwalde, Führer, Fühler and all the principalities called 'Fürstentum xyz': http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Spezial%3APr%C3%A4fixindexprefix=F%C3%BCnamespace=0 Interesting enough: If you start typing 'Fue' (with 'ue' being the standard transcription for 'ü' when your keyboard does not have the umlauts on it), you are immediately presented a list with 'Fü'-words. This is really handy for people who have no ü on their keyboard, but it is very unlikely that it comes to a german/swiss/austrian users mind that, in order to get better suggestions, he has to use a foreign-language-trick when he browses 'his' wikipedia with 'his' keyboard. You'll find the same behaviour on the fr-wp, sv-wp and a lot of others. That actually doesn't make it irrelevant, because browser support for Ctrl+Z in iframes isn't perfect either. The only thing that really resolves this is the side-by-side preview feature because it allows you to stay on the same page while previewing. Leaving as FIXED because we do have a solution for this in trunk (side-by-side preview). Variables like {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}} have the number formatted according to the
content language. You can see how in fi.wikipedia it has the second format.
I don't think it should be changed for the general case. Although for a site
like Wikimedia Commons which is full of {{int: }}, it makes sense.

sense of it all.

Detected bug in an extension! Hook FCKEditor_MediaWiki::onCustomEditor failed
to return a value; should return true to continue hook processing or false to
abort.
As I said in comment #2, this bug happens when a hook function (in this case:
FCKEditor_MediaWiki::onCustomEditor using the CustomEditor hook) fails to
return a boolean to continue or halt further processing. I have checked both
trunk and the REL1_15 branch (as of r61540) and the onCustomEditor method seems
to be returning false, as it should. Can you please check your copy for this?
If it's not returning false, try returning false and see if that fixes it.

In FCKeditor.body.php the custom editor function is defined as:
public function onCustomEditor($article, $user)
But in Wiki.php, there is a line that says:
if( wfRunHooks( 'CustomEditor', array( $article, $user ) ) ) {
The hook is correct and the extension is wrong. Neither $article or $user
should be passed by reference. This was fixed in trunk in r50690. This portion
of the bug is FIXED.

A proposed patch
The patch attached adds new syntax
{{includeonlysubst:subst:/includeonlyTemplate}}
now acts exactly like
{{includeonlysubst:/includeonlyTemplate}}
always should have. I.e. it expands the template even when it is being included
in a template that does not get subst:d.
In other respects
{{subst:subst:Template}}
acts exactly like
{{subst:Template}}
The alternative way to fix this would be to add a new magic word, this would,
in my opinion, be less easy for editors to remember. (That said we don't seem
to care much about the usability of template-wikitext).

I assure you most of the confusion and hostility directed towards the extension is a result of the hostility towards new and inexperienced users, both by the extension's UI and those behind its filters, and the fact that its very existence is completely contrary to the principle of a wiki. Actions that are not *obviously serious abuse* warrant at least the decency of the split-second human review that any recent changes patroller can give them, and with little impact on the content of the wiki. We managed for eight years. Instead, you try to use this extension to enforce style guidelines, and somehow get away with concealing these automated decisions in what is just about the only piece of closed-source code in the whole Wikimedia setup -- right down to the routers and the phone system -- further entrenching the us vs. them mentality that has come to define the project's outward attitude towards, frankly, all but a few thousand people.
