user_groups, for example, is populated from User::getEffectiveGroups.

Raising priority. This is making maintenance of rules very hard because we have
to hardcode all user groups that contain a certain right instead of being code
the actual intent via the user right.

Plus it is not just annoying to work around, it is causing problems as global
sysops, stewards, globalinterface users often get hit by a disallowing abuse
filter in routine maintenance because the local wiki doesn't know about these
groups.

So, for example, in globaleditinterface, if some wiki (*cough*,
en.wiktionary.org) has an abuse filter rule to essentially protect user
subpages users from editing by other users (except sysops bots etc. and other
whitelisted user groups), I am unable to edit their pages even though I'm
supposed to be able to edit protected pages and explicitly user script
subpages.

If they were able to look for the "bot" right (instead of bot group), and
"edituserjs" or "protect" right (instead of sysop), this would avoid having to
update all filters when local groups change, and will automatically also work
as expected for global users.

For the record, it seems to have been done. dickson.freenode.net has been
IPv6-enabled for quite a while now. Thanks to Leslie (especially since she left

When providing multiple answers to a single questions QuestyCaptcha does not
convert the answers to lower case, but it does convert the user input to
lowercase which can make the question unanswerable. In contrast, when providing
a single answer as a String, it is converted to lowercase as expected.
Furthermore, the example at
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:QuestyCaptcha#Question_and_Answer_Setup
implies that you should be able to provide answers in upper case. 

It is mentioned in a comment in the QuestyCaptcha.php file that the answers
should be lowercase but it is easy to miss.

I think zh-* (Chinese) variants are mistakenly included. They are not claimed

Considering that https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Research_Data_Proposals was
created in 2010 and never went anywhere, probably also because researchers
never found a way to agree on what was highest priority (except one bolded
item, which was done by [[m:WikiTeam]] instead), how can we proceed here? We
need an easy way that is also tracked long-term (nothing is going to happen
overnight anyway).

The easiest solution is probably to just create one bug for each item and then
ask researchers on wiki-research-l and elsewhere to vote (in bugzilla) on those
they'd need/use.

Right. Maybe https://www.gnu.org/software/freefont/coverage.html lies? I'm
getting more and more inclined to only use DejaVu. For the languages it doesn't
support we'd need to ensure native speakers like the font (e.g. by using ULS
fonts) but it's also quite hard to design image distortions that make sense
with those scripts.
If you know one of the following languages please speak up!

A user applied the new classes to a button template on Portuguese Wikipedia
https://pt.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=prev&oldid=38540137
but the color of the links inside the template was still blue. The user needed
to change this color to white by wrapping the link text in a
{{{2}}}

Isn't better if the classes have this style applied by default?

Sorry for double message; another idea I had is that some of those languages
don't have an OCR, as Wikisource folks painfully know (for instance Malayam).
Maybe for such languages we could just disable distortions, given bots are
unlikely to parse them on their own anyway.

Currently we sort the languages by their language codes before displaying them.
This is consistent with the current design i.e. languages appear sorted by
their language codes if the beta feature is disabled. 

I don't think a lot of people will object to the sorted languages. It's easier
to search a language and maintains design consistency.

Personally, if I enable the feature, I expect those to be common languages and
when they aren't I get confused; so I'd prefer the fillers to be separated in
some way. But I see your point, I'm unsure.

Its already set in the CSS how much time it takes for the animation to end. Do
you think it makes sense to hide the div after that time duration plus a few
milliseconds instead of the `animationend` event?

I think the animations are a nice to have and its alright if they dont show in
browsers without support (thus not use jQuery animations). I'll let Vibha &
Jared take this decision and then make necessary changes.

I went through the pictures for CAPTCHAs in Hindi. They're mostly
understandable except for in a few of the images it's impossible to distinguish
the character. Hindi has quite a few similar-looking characters differing just
by a small line or a dot. 

For example, the middle character is not-recognizable in

I must say the Czech (cs) version is better than I’d expect. The only issue
seems to be diacritics: especially the difference between i/í is practically
indistinguishable after the distortion. For most words, you can probably tell
from context, but in some cases, both versions would make correct words (e.g.

can be both “dobyti” and “dobytí”). Removing all words with “í” would probably
be enough, ignoring the difference between “í” and “i” would be perfect, but I
guess having some (low) nonzero expected error rate would be acceptable as
well.

I've noticed that in Firefox with a fresh profile this will lead to users
getting the scary looking "This connection is untrusted" message. For something
like accounts.wmflabs.org that routinely deals with new users to the project
who may not be very tech savvy, this could be a problem.

I am working on merging pages (categories) these days. Sometimes when I try to
merge two pages via 'Edit links' from ptwiki, I get an error message: "$number
needs to be integer". I don't know why.

I said "expect them at normal place within a few days.", but I confused normal
prepublication to ../draft/.. and final release.  There is a monthly cycle, and
once a monthly cycle is complete (all dumps processed) I do quick check for
misalignments, then push them to public place. I'm doing that now.

Hi, i think that the idea of the "lisätyylit" is to add css inline rules to div
and stuff after that is to end css-rules and add some table attributes. However
it has never worked because there is div element and not table. It also broke
resulting html-code even it seemed to work.

Reason why visual editor broke is the mismatching doublequotes in expanded
template result (in lisätyyli param: '... both" cellpadding="2"
cellspacing="5"':

I fixed some templates with this change and my guess that all of F1-templates
can be fixed with same way:

Hi, how about a sentence only contains 1 tofu, which is common in languages
like Chinese? 
detectTofu(text) will return true in such situation. Is that correct?

Vogone asked me to test something on my Wikibase repo and the results were...
interesting to say the least. I have four users.

User A is an administrator and bureaucrat. This user can edit a sysop protected
item with no issue.

User B is sysop only. This user can not edit a sysop protected item.

User C is an administrator and 'adminguy' (my dupe sysop group), they can edit
the sysop protected item.

User D is an 'adminguy' only. This user *can* edit a sysop protected item.

Therefore, I am making a weird conclusion that the only thing stopping sysops
editing a sysop protected item is because they are a sysop (with the group name
'sysop' specifically). Global sysops on Wikimedia can edit sysop protected
items because they are either a) not a local admin or b) not a 'sysop' only.

Some texts on the "page options" menu are unreadable because there is some
buttons in wrong places. At least I can't check "redirect this page to"
checkbox because the button is on the checkbox.

Sorry about my "ASAP" comment. It looks bad, but there's no "ASAP" hurry (and
for the record, I've never done any patches [maybe I need to learn]).

While updating rmtool I noticed that previously it saved its data to
/data/project/removed_tools, while /data/project/.system/removed_tools seems a)
safer to avoid clashes with a tool "removed_tools" and b) appears to have been
the actual destination by looking at its contents in eqiad.

So, Coren, could you please access the pmtpa data and:

1. Check whether /data/project/removed_tools is empty, and
2. if it is not, copy its contents to /data/project/removed_tools/pmtpa for
further processing.

If the pmtpa data has already been deleted, this wouldn't be too bad, as we
(hopefully :-)) don't guarantee that we keep *removed* tools forever, however
if there's something, no point in throwing it away.

images in a private wiki. When the same wiki is set to public, it works.

I've tried this with 3 different installations (1.22 and 1.23wmf20) on two
different servers, both with Visual Editor and WikiEditor. 

The relevant setting is

$wgGroupPermissions['*']['read'] = false;

When this is set to false, when a user (logged in and registered) edits a page
and starts typing the name of an existing file in the media selector, the input
box remains empty and does not suggest existing file names. 

When the read permission is set to true, then it works as expected (giving a
list of suggestions in the input box) - but of course then the wiki is no
longer private.

On the other hand, the link selector finds the files when I type
"File:Filename..". Also, the image is actually shown in the article when I
insert it with Wiki markup, or when I type in the correct filename in the
selector and click on "insert".

So somehow the media selector (but not the link selector) does not understand
the permission correctly for a logged-in user.
