Spinster added a comment. In T244847#8502964 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T244847#8502964>, @Pintoch wrote: > Here is the current status of this issue: > > The team at TIB (headed by @Loz.ross) is now maintaining the current wrapper and has contributed improvements to deploy it on other Wikibase instances: > https://gitlab.com/nfdi4culture/ta1-data-enrichment/openrefine-wikibase > Thank you to them! So the Wikidata reconciliation service currently falls under the responsibility of a German research group... I know TIB does amazing work for the Wikibase ecosystem (thank you indeed @Loz.ross and colleagues) but for Wikidata, this surely is a weird situation. If I'd have the money and the people, I'd jump to help, but I don't. > Prompted by the bad performance of this endpoint, Ontotext offers alternate endpoints for certain entity types, powered by their own search index over Wikidata. This video explains their approach <https://www.ontotext.com/knowledgehub/videos/kgf21-talks-reconciliation-server-demonstration-against-wikidata/>. The endpoints are: > > - https://reconcile.ontotext.com/people > - https://reconcile.ontotext.com/organizations > - https://reconcile.ontotext.com/locations > > Thank you Ontotext (@VladimirAlexiev among others). I, too, have been very enthusiastic seeing this initiative. However, I've tried the Ontotext reconciliation service several times, and I've had quite a few issues with it: - it produces *a lot* of wrong matches for me. Up to 30 to 40% of the "100% confident" matches are just plain wrong (see screenshot below - I just tried it again) - the service provides only 3 suggested matches when it's uncertain, and these tend to be wrong as well, even if a correct value is present (see second screenshot) F36869693: image.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F36869693> F36869695: image.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F36869695> I would currently not use the Ontotext alternatives for any real world application for that reason, and I have discouraged trainees from the GLAM sector from using them. (The 'old' Wikidata reconciliation service works much better and is still extremely workable when it's up, in my experience.) @VladimirAlexiev can such issues be reported somewhere, and if so where? Is Ontotext willing and able to improve upon the above services? Spinster added a comment. It's possible, but not straightforward. With a few Wikimedians we're trying to figure it out. I have requested SPARQL help at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Request_a_query#Help_with_a_SPARQL_query_for_Kartographer I can imagine a big collection of Kartographer-SPARQL examples would make sense; the examples at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Extension:Kartographer#Via_Wikidata_query are good but not enough to help people like me to build things with confidence. See this discussion on Multichill's talk page <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Multichill#Category:INaturalist_images_missing_SDC_depicts_may_need_a_poke>. Is it logic to say that new items the based on ISBN number (or other similar ID) should be Instance='edition' in Wikidata? No, you're trying to simplify something that is not that simple. On Wikipedia, which only uses text strings, I guess it's fine to take an ISBN number and then use a database to look it up and retrieve strings of text to build up a (single) reference. On Wikidata, where we are dealing with multilingual structured data, a 'book' is a cluster of sometimes dozens of multilingual layered entities. To make it very clear, as I think I didn't succeed in doing that with my earlier comment: I think it is NOT a good idea to ask for a tool for this. It's not simple matter that should be automated. This is stuff that needs knowledgeable human review. If someone has a ISBN number and wants to 'have that ISBN on Wikidata', they should need to do at least the following checks (and this list is non-exhaustive; I'm actually not a librarian so I will probably miss important things and get some things wrong): - Is there already any work-level and/or edition-level item that corresponds with the book? If so, any new items need to correspond correctly with the existing ones. If not, new items need to be created for both levels. - A check needs to happen whether the ISBN is of a translation. Maybe we already have Wikidata items for the (original language) work, and/or for an edition of a translation in another language. If that is the case, correct connections need to be made. - The book needs *both* a work-level item and an edition-level item. (This is exactly what FRBR is about.) - Both the work item and the edition item need the correct statements in the right place: author, publisher, date of publication and other metadata. Correctly. I don't know of any centralized databases that get this stuff right where we can retrieve this; this step probably needs deeper human research than just a check with a (any) database. Worldcat is (in my experience) pretty messy at this point so please do NOT use Worldcat as a sole source. - If lookups on Wikidata need to happen for the right author and publisher, that needs to be done _with care_ - if the author, is, say, named John Johnson where we have dozens of people with a similar name, a thorough check is needed to make sure the right one is chosen. In my experience, it is always best to actually go on Wikidata and do a bit of (non-tool) research at this point, because there may be items for humans with just initials or with a slightly different spellings that can't be caught by a tool. - If an item for the author/publisher is not found, should a new one be created? I'm not sure - there's so much opportunity for introduction of errors and duplicates here. Let me state it very clearly: I'm not a fan of this task at all. I think describing books on Wikidata is simply too complex for a single-purpose tool. If describing books correctly is an intricate piece of reality that needs a few years of education in library science, then it's not something that we can magically simplify on Wikidata by 'toolifying' it. Spinster added a comment. If someone ever develops this, it needs to be done with the greatest of care. If not, such a tool could produce excessive duplicate and wrongly modeled items, producing a huge amount of work for the community to clean up. See https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Books for some input on modeling. This community needs to be consulted. - Books need to conform to the FRBR description model, in order to conform with the level of data quality that libraries also apply. This tool needs to make sure all necessary items on work and edition/translation level are checked and created if necessary. - Make sure the end user, even if they are beginners, do correct matching with existing authors, publishers, locations of publishing. I'm actually not sure what would need to be done if new items need to be created at this level... do we even want that? - Avoid creation of duplicates (duplicate works, editions, authors, publishers, locations of publishing). Other input very welcome. I'd rather see no tool than one that introduces large amounts of erroneous data. Spinster added a comment. I accidentally bumped upon this, wasn't aware this was proposed. Although I'm one of Wikidata's greatest fans, I've always found its current date/time system very limited, especially when it comes to modeling intervals and uncertainties in an easily machine-readable way. The current 'solution' with qualifiers is, IMO, less than ideal. This proposal looks like a really good step in the right direction. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T270858: My Wikidata edits are getting throttled again...
Spinster created this task. Spinster added a project: Wikidata. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION Since an hour or two, my Wikidata edits are being throttled. However, I haven't done any large-scale edits recently (see below). F33973716: image.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F33973716> (Usually I succeed in doing these edits after trying several times.) This is the third time this type of 'out of the blue' throttling happens, and has each time happened without a clear reason. A first occurrence was reported in T255804 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T255804>. The second occurrence happened on November 25; I then briefly discussed that with @Multichill and @Reedy without filing a ticket - no cause was found and the problem went away after a week or so. As can be seen in my edit history of the past day <https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?target=Spinster=all==2020-12-26=2020-12-28=50=Special%3AContributions>, I haven't run large batch edits recently. My last batch edit, using OpenRefine, dates from December 22 <https://editgroups.toolforge.org/b/OR/64b01922cea/> (five days ago). Some hours ago, I used the TABernacle tool for some edits to labels and descriptions, and I used the Mix'n'match gadget on one item, but those have created only a dozen edits or so. All my other edits are slow, manual ones. Filing this ticket as it's interesting that this pops up again IMO. Is there a use case for needing M-IDs for files without structured data? I have been asked the question by GLAM staff active in the Dutch Digital Strategy network, as part of an investigation we are doing re: to what extent Wikimedia projects are in alignment with this national strategy, which is heavily Linked Open Data focused (see this post in This Month in GLAM <https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Newsletter/May_2020/Contents/Netherlands_report> for context). The question was posed in the context of 'older' (i.e. pre-SDC) uploads done by Dutch GLAMs and whether these can be approached as Linked Open Data as well. Use cases include: - GLAMs want to be able to link to 'their' files on Commons in a uniform, LOD-compliant way, from the corresponding files in their collection management systems. Easy (and uniform) retrieval of M-IDs from Commons, also from files that don't have SDC yet, makes it possible for GLAMs to point back from their own collection management systems (stating, in Linked Open Data, that an asset in their collection corresponds to one on Commons). - GLAMs want to add structured data to their 'older' Commons uploads in a straightforward way. Easy (and uniform) retrieval of M-IDs from Commons makes it easier for any external tool to be able to do batch SDC edits, also to files that don't have structured data yet. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T256617: Make link to entity/concept URI visible in left side menu for all Commons files
Spinster created this task. Spinster added projects: SDC General, GLAM-Tech. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. Restricted Application added a project: Wikidata. TASK DESCRIPTION At this moment, some files on Wikimedia Commons have a link to their concept URI (e.g. http://commons.wikimedia.org/entity/M91260656) in the left side menu, but not all files have this. F31910439: image.png <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F31910439> It's my impression that this link is present for recently uploaded files (probably after a specific #structureddataoncommons <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/structureddataoncommons/> deployment), but not for older files. I'm currently working on a project with WMNL that analyzes GLAM contributions to Wikimedia projects in comparison to Dutch national strategic architecture and recommendations re: digital heritage <https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Newsletter/May_2020/Contents/Netherlands_report>, and one of the recommendations will include the importance of being able to link to (also older) Wikimedia Commons files as Linked Open Data. So also for older uploads it will be important that GLAMs will be able to discover, and point to, the persistent Linked Open Data identifiers of files that they have uploaded to Commons. Hence this feature request: to make these URIs visible for all Commons files. (This would probably also include making these concept URIs discoverable via API; but as I'm not an active API user I'm not sure about the status of this, and whether this needs a separate ticket.) Thank you! > - We want to emphasize that while we do expect a SPARQL endpoint to be part of a medium to long term solution, it will only be part of that solution. Even once the SPARQL endpoint is production-ready, it will still have limitations in terms of timeouts, expensive queries, and federation. Some use cases will need to be migrated, over time, to better solutions — once those solutions exist. Understood. These concerns do seem to be focused on technical limitations, am I correct? In terms of context, I think in the above thread I haven't expressed clearly enough that a SPARQL endpoint is also quite important for Wikimedia Commons to be considered a serious citizen of the Linked Open Data web, being a currently rather standard style of endpoint for LOD repositories worldwide, including the ability to do federated queries across repositories. It's an important element for Wikimedia projects to be potentially taken seriously in GLAM+ worldwide knowledge infrastructure. For future better solutions (again, I assume, technically more stable?) I hope we'll stay committed to being compliant with what the rest of the semantic web is doing. As for a SPARQL endpoint being challenging for many end users from an UX perspective - I would say: don't underestimate our end users and community. I have been wildly surprised at how many people in and around the Wikimedia community - not just a narrow group of power users, but I would say also lots of 'regular' contributors! - have mastered SPARQL and actively use it. A lot of it also thanks to the great work on the Wikidata Query Helper and several volunteer-built tools to make building queries easier. Can my colleagues from the #structureddataoncommons <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/structureddataoncommons/> team do anything to make it easier to include filename-to-Mid conversion in QuickStatements? It is actually a blocker to do proper Commons-related batch edits like for instance outlined in T238443: Add P180 (Depicts) and P6243 (Digital representation of) structured data to Commons files representing artworks by Jakob Smits <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T238443> and I'll be happy to help give things a push if needed. According to @Multichill a file's M ID is identical to its page ID (example in file info <https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Dead_Vlei,_Sossusvlei,_Namibia,_2018-08-06,_DD_085.jpg=info>) and there are also Concept URI links in the left hand sidebar on Commons file pages, but perhaps retrieving these for usage in tools like QuickStatements can be made easier? That's indeed a way to get the files into AC/DC, thanks! Yes, it is absolutely related to Wikidata's WikiProject Documentation; I'd like to use Phabricator to do project management for that, and have the impression that we'll have more features when it's a separate project. Typical requests from external data providers include: Keeping Wikidata and external data sources linked and in sync Ways, workflows, easy tools for external organizations to keep track of edits happening to 'their' data on Wikidata Integrity of data from external providers (e.g. how to make sure that correct statements, sourced to an external data provider, are not vandalized or changed in an incorrect manner) Statistics of use and re-use of specific sets of data, both on Wikimedia projects and externally And they would actually really love it if we'd embrace something like IIIF - so let them work from their own image repositories, with us embedding that. Spinster created this task.Spinster added a project: Wikidata.Herald added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTIONIt would be extremely helpful if OpenRefine would include an *operational* reconciliation service with Wikidata. It would make data imports so much easier, by offering a tool with which values from an external dataset can be matched much more easily and correctly with Wikidata. You can earn money by coding it: there's a bounty of currently $265. For more info, see this issue on GitHub. Reposting here to draw more attention to it. @Magnus created a reconciliation API on the Wikidata side, but the implementation on the OpenRefine side is still missing. Spinster added a comment. Thanks for the example! It is handy in case of single queries, but what about checking many values for many Wikidata items at once? I have created an actual example / use case of a dataset that I'm currently working with and that is a typical workflow for me. See the example here. (I don't intend to burden you specifically with this request - I put this here on Phabricator in the hopes that other developers may see it too, and might be interested in looking into this!)TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T146140EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: SpinsterCc: Spinster, Tomayac, Aklapper, dachary, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Ricordisamoa, Sjoerddebruin, Mbch331___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs
[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Updated] T146140: wishlisted: Wikidata Tools for Google Spreadsheets add-on
Spinster added a comment. Hi Tom, thanks for the quick reply! I know and use these functions, I actually mean something different: give me the specific value(s) for one specific property/statement, rather than all statements as happens in WIKIDATAFACTS. For instance, if I have a cell containing Q1282569, I'd like to ask specifically for the English-value label of its P109 property (profession), and then in a next cell to the right for instance its P569 (date of birth) and in another next cell its P570 (date of death). Next row I might have another Q-number for which I'd also ask its P109, and then P569, P570, etc. Each cell requests one property specifically. I hope I'm making myself clear. As this is very Wikidata-centric I thought about a separate add-on rather than integrated in the current Wikipedia-centered one, but maybe they can be integrated too.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T146140EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: SpinsterCc: Spinster, Tomayac, Aklapper, dachary, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Ricordisamoa, Sjoerddebruin, Mbch331___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

TASK DESCRIPTION@Tomayac has written an excellent add-on for Google Spreadsheets, Wikipedia Tools for Google Spreadsheets, which I use very intensively. While using it, I have often thought how incredibly handy it would be to have a similar tool, but with Wikidata-focused commands - Wikidata Tools for Google Spreadsheets. Unfortunately I'm not a programmer so can't write this myself, but I would be extremely grateful to anyone who would build this. Features that would be great to have: Start from a cell with either a Wikidata Q number or an en:Article Title (or other language code) Ability to retrieve the value of a specific property for that Q number or Wikipedia article link; either as a resulting Q number, or its label in a given language, or the string/whatever in case of (e.g.) time properties, identifiers, etc. More suggestions welcome.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T146140EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: SpinsterCc: Spinster, Tomayac, Aklapper, dachary, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Ricordisamoa, Sjoerddebruin, Mbch331___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Created] T138916: Wikidata gadget request: Search for this item in Mix'n'Match
Spinster created this task.Spinster added a project: Wikidata-Gadgets.Herald added subscribers: Zppix, Aklapper.Herald added a project: Wikidata. TASK DESCRIPTIONI use the Mix'n'Match search feature extremely frequently when editing Wikidata. It works very well when you want to complete all potential authority control properties for an item (mostly a person, but can be a concept or a geographical feature or a building too, for instance). I'm not a coder but I have a hunch that it could be quite easy to create a gadget that adds a link to the Mix'n'Match search for the current item to the toolbar on the left. The gadget could use the English label of the item as search string, with fallback to the label in another language where a label *is* present. (I know this is not perfect, but it would work in many cases.) An example: Item https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2351102 is the Belgian artist Leo Copers. Has "Leo Copers" as English label. Permalink for search for his name in Mix'n'Match is http://tools.wmflabs.org/mix-n-match/?mode=search=Leo%20Copers== The gadget could link to this permalink URL. With one click I can then take a look and complete the item's authority statements/matches.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T138916EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: SpinsterCc: Aklapper, Spinster, Zppix, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Ricordisamoa, Sjoerddebruin, Mbch331___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

Spinster added a comment. I’m not going to the hackathon but will be there on Wednesday and would love to attend this. I'm not a programmer. I’m able to take existing queries and modify them a bit. I'm also able to build WDQ queries and then use the converter. Would like to learn to build SPARQL queries from scratch. Haven’t been able to figure out the scenarios and questions below, though, and would like to learn this (if it is doable via Wikidata’s SPARQL engine): Give me all the paintings that are depicted in https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17337965 and put them on a map - this should be retrieved via the coordinates of their collections Give me all the artworks in one art collection + all their inventory numbers + the reference URLs in the references for the inventory numbers (that last part is something I can’t do yet) Give me all the artists who are creators of artworks of one art collection, show each artist only once, and put them on a map based on their birth date I’d like to see an interesting and working use case for the Graph and the Dimensions display mode Is it possible to generate a graph visualization of 8 different art collections and their connected artists (so that you see which artists are represented in multiple collections)? I'd like to work with pagepiles and/or with sets of handpicked Wikidata items, but have a hunch that this is not possible, is this correct? If it is possible, how to do it?
