Hi Ariel,

thanks for the very thoughtful question. I got asked this question every
time I present it, and during the Blue Sky presentation this question - or
a variation of it - was asked three times. It really is on top of people's
mind!

My answer is half inconsistent, I am afraid, because I have by now come up
with three ways to answer this question, and they contradict each other. So
I am glad to hear more thoughts on it.

Here are the three answers:

1) I think that language is a pretty bad delimiter to keep points of view
apart. Yes, sure, it allows the Japanese Wikipedia to offer a different
description of World War 2 than the Korean Wikipedia has, but I am not sure
that is entirely a good thing. We don't have two Wikipedias for Portugal
and Brazil, they have to agree and what they say, but we have Wikipedias in
Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, Serbocroatian... and I am not sure that the
outcome of this decision is fully positive. So, my main point is, if we
really want to capture cultural differences, let's align the borders of the
editions of Wikipedia along these cultures. But aligning the cultural
borders solely along language borders is badly imperfect.

2) But in general, I think that accepting that different Wikipedias should
have different contents are incompatible with our NPOV policy. Now we could
have a lengthy discussion whether NPOV is a good policy or not. But in
general, I'd really prefer to have all points of views being presented with
their due weight in all languages, instead of using languages to represent
a point of view only in one language, and have a different point of view in
another language. I would love to be able to read both the Japanese and the
Korean point of view on contentious issues between these two countries - as
I can in Serbian and Croatian, because I can read both languages just fine
- but I think it is rather problematic that language barriers dictate the
point of view I have access to. In fact, in many cases, we can see in the
English speaking Wikipedia how the very same editors from the say Croatian
and Serbian Wikipedia come to a more balanced result in the English
Wikipedia, which they wouldn't accept in their 'home' Wikipedias. Funny,
isn't it?

3) More importantly, and entirely disagreeing with #1 and #2, is that the
Abstract Wikipedia never suggests to replace the current language editions,
but to fill up the gaps in any given language edition. So, if the Croatian
Wikipedia really wants to go into details on Croatian folk songs and
Croatian food items, they should be totally able to do so without having to
feel bad that they might be missing basic information about South American
countries and Australian Aboriginal cultures. In fact, what I hope is that
each language edition can choose to display the renderings from the
Abstract Wikipedia for most articles, and then they can concentrate on
creating in-depth articles on the topics they really care about - local
cities, cultures, traditions. I remember in the beginning when working on
the Croatian Wikipedia - it feels weird to work on the article about a
local dish if you're still missing articles on all chemical elements. How
can I write an article about the town my mom lives in (pop. 148) if there
is no article yet about the country of Mexico? The abstract Wikipedia has
the ability to lessen that pressure and allow the local communities to
focus on their interests more.

I assume that the solution that combines the three answers is that we will
display the local articles whenever available, but be able to take a look
at the article rendered from the abstract version (for contrast and
comparison and maintenance). And if there is no local article, we would
treat the article rendered from the abstract version like a proper article.

So, as said, the actual answer to your question is still work in progress,
but I wanted to write down a first sketch towards the answer. I am also
very happy to hear other people thoughts on this question. But all in all I
think that going toward an Abstract Wikipedia will improve along all the
dimensions discussed. But I am sure I missed important dimensions on this
question.

Hi all,

From Monday 10 December to Friday 21 December we (community/Wikimedia
Belgium) organise the writing weeks about the German-speaking Community of
Belgium.

The German-speaking Community is one of the three communities in Belgium,
located near the border with Germany and comprises nine municipalities:
Amel, Büllingen, Burg-Reuland, Bütgenbach, Eupen, Kelmis, Lontzen, Raeren
and Sankt Vith. The area stretches from the 3-country point near Vaals
(Netherlands) in the north to the 3-country point near Ouren and Luxembourg
in the south.

This area is unfortunately only very limited described on Wikipedia. That
is why we invite you to write on Wikipedia about this area and help to fill
this gap bit by bit.

Please add the articles you write or translate to the project page. In this
way we know what has been done and it can stimulate other writers to write
and translate.

Hey all! Just an update!

The main campaign has been running for a little under two weeks and so far
things are ticking over nicely!

===Procedural notes===

Banners limited: As has been standard practice we are limiting the number
of times a reader will see a banner within a single browser if they choose
to not dismiss the banners. A user should only see a banner a maximum of 5
times per browser. After this it will result in the banners being
suppressed for a period of 1 month.

Latin America: To focus on our English campaign and to reduce potential
technical stresses we disabled our low level Latin America campaign. It
will be re-enabled in January.

Testing: We've been working hard over the past week to incorporate as much
community feedback as we can both in terms of design and text. Will try to
update you on this as soon as possible.

===Fundraising on the Wikipedia Portal===

We have just released a small fundraising appeal on the www.wikipedia.org
portal. This experiment was developed by online fundraising lead production
manager Peter Coombe and UX designer Robin Schoenbaechler. It has been made
possible thanks to extensive collaborations across the foundation, in
particular with engineering manager Sam Smith and portal engineer Jan
Drewniak. We thank them for their guidance and enthusiasm. Thanks also to
Volker Eckl, who supplied input on the integration of our new content into
the portal as well as the legal team for conducting a legal review before
it went live. This experiment is planned to run for the duration of the
English campaign (throughout the month of December).

Teachers in school used to say not to trust Wikipedia. But I have noticed
that over time it's very reliable- with good soured links. And
misinformation gets corrected very quickly. I think it gets a bad rep in
the public k-12 system. Thank you to the editors for preventing people from
filling pages with misinformation!

Whilst there are certainly anecdotes to this effect, there's no evidence at
present that we're losing any more readers than normal. For example, page
views to the Simple English Wikipedia

(I chose this wiki because you linked to it in your email) are relatively
stable. Now, eyeballing page view graphs like I did is not really
scientific, but it gives a better indication than relying on isolated
comments.

Criticism of the fundraising banners (and there is plenty of it) will be
better received by the Fundraising team if we all stick to the facts, and
avoid extrapolation and hyperbole.

Hoi,
No point in automating NPOV, we are not at a point where we can. Where we
are is a point where we can collect all sources used to prove a point, any
point. We are at a point where we can indicate what sources are used to
prove or disprove any given point.

Now a NPOV does not mean that facts can be denied because "a" source says
something is a fact. There is plenty of literature where facts are plain
untrue and when this is a given, a source cannot be used. This mechanism to
validate sources in a bigger context is what I propose.

The facts will fall as they may. However calling the Croations names is
only justified when it is justified.

[Wikimedia-l] New board of Wikimedia Venezuela

Dear Wikimedians,

At our seventh general assembly on November 24, the members of Wikimedia
Venezuela elected its new board, whose members are the following:

* Oscar Costero (re-elected)
* Ybsen Lucero (re-elected)
* Marianny Contreras
* Lourdes Herrera
* Samuel Cirilo

Ybsen and Samuel have been in previous boards, while Marianny and Lourdes
are new to our board, please join me in welcoming them. I also would like
to thank Kevin Dels, Jin Kadaba and Tomas Guardia for their work as now
former board members.

During our assembly we proposed a new set bylaws to tackle the current
outflow of volunteers and members that migrated the country in past years.
We decided to have a new volunteer role in communication with the board
that oversight our activities and engage with members, volunteers and
expats in wiki activities around the globe. Jin Kadaba (Perú) and Santiago
de Viana (Spain) were elected to this new post.

I am delighted to be able to work with these people in favor of the mission
and vision of our movement.
