Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimédia France Governance review

2018-07-11 Thread Balázs Viczián
Thank you Asaf. This seems to be a mixture of ppl mgmt and org skills,
shifted heavily towards the latter. The last time I was at wmcon was 2014
[1] when this was bearly a topic at all, only touched it here and there a
bit, when it was inevitable.

Good to see the progress on this.

Hi Mike,

perhaps in the future one could undergo such a review before a crisis
happens. Like a medical checkup, not yearly thoufh, but say every 3-5 years
to prevent/treat in early stage such events.

So far all governance reviews (including this) were responses to a collapse.

Nominally, the WMF is going to be the next Wikimedia organisation to do a
governance review, as per:

https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Minutes/2017-11-17,18,19#Governance_Review

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Cheat sheets visual editing on Wikipedia

2018-07-11 Thread Strainu
There are a bunch of such cheatsheets around, I did one myself based on the
old Editing Wikipedia brochure, but what Arne has managed is to somehow put
the image (screenshot) in the spotlight in a way much better than anything
I've seen before.

Having a svg version will ease the translation effort a lot.

The publishers and record labels are also corporations. I see that our stand is
to be in the side of the “artists”. In the future we should support them to
start collective bargaining and to reach collective agreement with the new
online publishers.

We should do the same with scholars, too: help them to find alternatives to the
scientific publishers. In this EU hasn’t done a great job either, although they
like to promote “open science” (in a close collaboration with the established
publishers).

When the Guardian reported[1] on the recent European copyright campaign, as
supported by Wikimedia projects, their spin was that it served the
corporate interests of Facebook, Google and YouTube:

"Google, YouTube and Facebook
 could escape having to
make billions in payouts to press publishers, record labels and artists
after EU lawmakers voted to reject proposed changes to copyright rules that
aimed to make the tech companies share more of their revenues."

The Guardian – a paper that has traditionally been a staunch supporter of
Wikimedia, and had Jimmy Wales on its board until last year – added,

"More than 1.3 billion users of Google-owned YouTube
 regularly watch music
videos, making it the biggest music service in the world. However, artists
receive only 67 cents per user annually in royalties."

I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

Sure, I / we are happy to add this (and other) material somewhere. I
couldn't find the best spot in the Wikimedia Resource Center (somewhere
here
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Resource_Center/For_program_coordinators
?), so I'm happy to get any pointers.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Cheat sheets visual editing on Wikipedia

2018-07-11 Thread Delphine Dallison
It would be great to get all these cheat sheets gathered up in a meta page on
Wikimedia Resources so we can do a concerted effort to get them translated into
as many languages as possible and so we don't keep on reinventing the wheel. I
think both Arne's cheat sheets and the Wikimedia Deutschland ones are great.
Personally I would probably chose to go with Arne's if I was doing
institutional level outreach and the other set for more relaxed public
editathons, so they both have their value. Is anyone on here with metawiki to
help us gather these in one place including the translations as they start to
come through?
