Re: [Wikimedia-l] Resolution to pause Movement Brand Project through March 2021

2020-09-30 Thread Zack McCune
Thank you María!

Following this Board resolution, the Brand Project team will be updating
the project hub. [1] We will also release the Naming Survey results as
both a report and as the anonymized data by October 6. The publication of
those materials will be shared on the project hub and announced here.

Cheers,

- Zack, Essie, and Samir (the Brand Project team)

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Board update on Branding: Briefing postponement

2020-08-05 Thread Zack McCune
Hello everyone,

Heather Walls and I met with much of the Board of Trustees on July 28 to
provide an informational briefing on the strategy, history, and process of
the Brand Project. We shared milestones up until recent events including
the RfC, the open letter, and the survey (but not survey results). We also
answered preliminary questions and committed to resolving other questions
that come up.

The brand project team is preparing for our upcoming Board meeting where we
will decide next steps. The 2-day in-person Board of Trustees meeting
originally scheduled to coincide with Wikimania in early August, has now
been moved to a series of virtual meetings over the last two weeks of
September.

For reference, the Brand Project team has added the materials that were
shared with the Board of Trustees to our project page. [1]

Cheers,

- Zack

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Brand Project] Rescheduling Naming Convention Proposal community review

2020-06-08 Thread Zack McCune
Hi GerardM,

Indeed!

As I mentioned in my earlier message, the process will be multilingual. We
want to ensure that as many people as possible from across the movement
have the opportunity to participate, so we are working hard to make that
happen. When it comes to naming in particular, we need to understand the
localization opportunities and challenges of the different proposals in
order to arrive at a system that works globally. We are having both the
survey and the proposals translated into Arabic, Chinese, French, German,
Russian and Spanish. All materials will also be made available on Meta-Wiki
so that volunteers can translate to other languages. Our team will be
analyzing survey responses and discussion themes in all languages.

We look forward to talking names with all parts of the movement.

Best,

Zack

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Brand Project] Rescheduling Naming Convention Proposal community review

2020-06-03 Thread Zack McCune
Hi Tito -

Your observation is fair and welcome. The project team will update the
timeline on Meta-Wiki to reflect the latest rescheduling and our relaunched
consultations.

The priority is on completing the collaborative design activities of the
project (naming, design, and style guides) in time for the birthday in
January. The process of adoption will follow the completion of this work,
so it too will be adjusted in the timeline.

The project team is working to keep this timeline as accurate as we can
amidst much global uncertainty, so I want to be the first to acknowledge
that timing will likely remain at the monthly estimate level and may
further change.

Thanks,

- Zack

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Brand Project] Rescheduling Naming Convention Proposal community review

2020-06-03 Thread Zack McCune
Hi everyone,

As promised, we are back with an update and a new timeline to discuss names
as a movement. We are excited to take on naming together beginning 16 June.
Here is an overview of what happened and what to expect:

After additional weeks of legal review and a conversation with the Board of
Trustees at their 22 May meeting, we have alignment to present three naming
convention proposals for movement-wide review on 16 June.

The Board of Trustees affirmed support for the project [1] and vetted
various naming options. They explored legal and financial implications of
different approaches, and evaluated them based on their potential to act as
compelling, unifying tools to elevate the work we are currently doing and
ensure the future of our movement. Based on these assessments, the
movement-wide review will revolve around two naming convention proposals
centered on Wikipedia, one that is a Wiki/Wikipedia hybrid, and an open
response area where respondents can share their own naming proposals. We
feel confident that the vetting process has led to solid proposals, while
we also want to ensure we are open to your ideas and are committed to
reviewing suggestions made in the open response area.

While these weeks of work have reconfirmed that naming structures centered
entirely on “Wiki” would not be legally feasible or financially
responsible, we were able to uncover ways in which “Wiki” can be used as
part of movement naming. We know there will be questions around this, and
look forward to discussing more in detail during the upcoming live
presentation.

***Join us for the live presentation [2] of the three Naming Convention
Proposals on 16 June at 15:00 UTC.***

We will present the various options that were considered, the risks and
rewards of each, and how the process arrived at the three options for
review.

As previously planned, the movement-wide review to follow will be
multilingual and will rely on surveys for individual contributors,
affiliates, and Foundation depts, as well as open discussion on Meta-Wiki,
from 16 June to 30 June. The two weeks of feedback will help to remove,
refine and recombine elements from the proposals into a single, synthesized
proposal.

We look forward to talking names with you soon.

Best,

- Zack & the Brand Project Team

[Wikimedia-l] [Brand Project] Rescheduling Naming Convention Proposal community review

2020-05-06 Thread Zack McCune
Hi everyone-

Today, we are rescheduling the Naming Convention Proposal community review
planned for May 7 - 21, including tomorrow's live presentation. This
critical part of the Movement Brand Project is designed to share and
review compelling,
unifying naming proposals that would sustain our free knowledge mission far
into the future. [1]

We are incredibly excited to talk NAMES with our communities. We know how
important naming is to the Movement, and together we’ve made considerable
progress on options that would allow us to invite and inspire people to
join us. People join the movements that move them, and we want our Naming
Convention Proposals to be both functional and appealing.

We are particularly interested in “Wiki” as a potential direction, often
suggested by the community and widely used in our Movement. However, there
are significant practical issues with "Wiki" due to the relevant trademark
landscape. We do not want to present to you an option that we could not
make work. The fastest thing to do would be to remove it from the
possibilities, but we hear your preferences and we don’t want to do that.
Instead, we need more time to expand the research and risk evaluation with
our Legal team and the Board to fully understand what opportunities we
have.

We recognize that changing timing may appear to avoid a necessary and
promised discussion. Nothing could be further from our intentions. We want
to meet our commitment to you to present the best options based on the
conversations we’ve had so far, instead of a more limited set of options
that we had to narrow in order to meet our deadline. We want to have more
exploration and clarity on the risks, costs, and rewards of naming changes
to share with you at this critical phase.

Collaborating with our Legal team and the Board, we will work to have more
details to share with you soon. The Project Team will meet with the Board
of Trustees during their May 22nd summit, and will follow up as soon as we
can after.

Yours in branding,

- Zack, Essie, Elena, Samir, Rupika and the entire Brand Project team

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Community feedback and next steps on movement brand proposal

2019-09-06 Thread Zack McCune
Hi Pine -

Thanks for your questions. We set out to measure community appetite for
this change, knowing that it is something we share as our Movement's
identity and therefore something that needs broad support. On Meta-Wiki, we
shared our consultation metrics for assessing that support and/or
opposition [1].

In assessing the positions and comments shared during this 4 month
consultation, we noted that 38% of reviewing affiliates explicitly support
the branding proposal (almost 2x our goal of 20%). We also measured that
just 0.6% (57 people over more than 9,000 reached) of those reached during
the consultation explicitly opposed the proposal, which relates to our
benchmark that if "less than 20% oppose, we will consider the proposal to
have strong support." Hence the language used in our recommendation. We
will add the overall response metrics to Meta to document these outcomes.

Many of the reviewing parties identified things they would need to see
within a new brand system to consider it for approval and adoption. That's
what this next phase of collaboration allows!

yours,

- Zack

[Wikimedia-l] Community feedback and next steps on movement brand proposal

2019-09-05 Thread Zack McCune
*Summary* - We want your help with a voluntary, OPT-IN design process for
movement branding. Please join the in-depth discussion group, or watch for
updates on Meta-Wiki.

Hello all,

After 4 months of community consultation, spanning dozens of affiliates,
several mailing lists, community conferences, and Meta-Wiki, I am pleased
to share a summary of feedback on the proposed 2030 movement brand strategy
[1].

From more than 319 comments, representing 150 individual contributors and
63 affiliates, we assessed 6 major themes in feedback:

   1.

   Reducing confusion
   2.

   Protecting reputation
   3.

   Supporting sister projects
   4.

   Addressing (legal, governmental) risks
   5.

   Supporting movement growth
   6.

   The process of change

Please visit our feedback summary page to learn more [2]. You will see
examples of comments within each section, along with a rough indication of
how many of the comments that we received were related to each theme.

The comments sometimes contradict one another, showing that across our wide
movement’s experience, different points of view are common (and a sign of
health!). To visualize these tensions, we have created “polarity maps”
which are used to help visualize how different arguments coexist in tension
with each other.

Ultimately, the comments provided from you all are very thoughtful and
useful guidance on what is needed to make our movement’s branding
successful. One can read the 6 themes above as “criteria” for assessing
branding systems.

== Thanks ==

I would like to thank the organizers of Iberoconf, Wikipedia Education
Summit, and the Wikimedia Summit for inviting us to hold discussions during
their sessions. I would also like to thank my colleagues Elena Lappen,
Samir Elsharbaty, and Blanca Flores who conducted extensive parts of this
consultation. To the hundreds of people, and dozens of affiliates
commenting, thank you for reviewing the proposal and offering your
perspectives and insights.

== Next steps and staying involved ==

There is considerable support for the brand proposal and general appetite
to improve our movement’s branding system. Further, we believe that
critical feedback on the proposal offers direct guidance for precisely what
branding must do to be successful for our movement. We have shared these
insights and our proposed continuance with the Board of Trustees, who
approved continuing these efforts.

Acting on community insights, we will be collaborating on formal brand
naming, visual identity, and brand system design that will use “Wikipedia”
as the central reference point. The resulting system will be OPT-IN for
affiliates.

This design process will be guided by a “brand network” – a group of
volunteers who would like to continue advising on brand during this
consultation. Dozens of people have already volunteered, and we invite you
to join the group. We will use a group on Wikimedia Space to host this
discussion and the group will be closed to allow candid discussions and
room for iterations. EVERYONE IS INVITED TO JOIN [3]. If you do not want to
commit to the in-depth, longer term discussions that will be happening
within the brand network group, we will still be tracking comments left on
the project’s Meta-Wiki page [4]. Furthermore, all important ideas and
updates originating from the brand network discussion will be shared
publicly to mailing lists and Meta-Wiki.

The development of this proposed identity system will take approximately 6
months. As stated, regular updates will be shared to mailing lists,
Wikimedia Space, and Meta-Wiki [4]. Please engage us where you are most
comfortable! Once complete, community groups will have the power to decide
if/when they opt in to using the new system.

Yours,

 Zack

[Wikimedia-l] Reviewing our brand system for our 2030 goals

2019-02-25 Thread Zack McCune
:: Apologies for cross-posting to multiple mailing lists. We want to ensure
we spread the word about this opportunity to as many people as possible. ::

Hi all,

We are writing today to invite you to be a part of a community review on
Wikimedia brand research and strategy.

Recently, the Wikimedia Foundation set out to better understand how the
world sees Wikimedia and Wikimedia projects as brands.[1] We wanted to get
a sense of the general visibility of our different projects, and evaluate
public support of our mission to spread free knowledge.

We launched a global brand study to research these questions, as part of
our planning toward our 2030 strategic goals.[2] The study was commissioned
by the Board, carried out by the brand consultancy Wolff Olins, and
directed by the Foundation’s Communications team.[3][4] It collected
perspectives from the internet users of seven countries (India, China,
Nigeria, Egypt, Germany, Mexico and the US) on Wikimedia projects and
values.

The study revealed some interesting trends:

- Awareness of Wikipedia is above 80% in Western Europe and North America.

- Awareness of Wikipedia averages above 40% in emerging markets,[5] and is
fast growing.

- There is awareness of other projects, but was significantly lower. For
example, awareness of Wikisource was at 30%, Wiktionary at 25%, Wikidata at
20%, and Wikivoyage at 8%.

- There was significant confusion around the name Wikimedia. Respondents
reported they had either not heard of it, or extrapolated its relationship
to Wikipedia.

- In spite of lack of awareness about Wikimedia, respondents showed a high
level of support for our mission.

Following from these research insights, the Wolff Olins team also made a
strategic suggestion to refine the Wikimedia brand system.[6] The
suggestions include:

- Use Wikipedia as the central movement brand rather than Wikimedia.

- Provide clearer connections to the Movement projects from Wikipedia to
drive increased awareness, usage and contributions to smaller projects.

- Retain Wikimedia project names, with the exception of Wikimedia Commons
which is recommended to be shortened to Wikicommons to be consistent with
other projects.

- Explore new naming conventions for the Foundation and affiliate groups
that use Wikipedia rather than Wikimedia.

- Consider expository taglines and other naming conventions to reassert the
connections between projects (e.g. “__ - A Wikipedia project”).

This is not a new idea.[7][8]

By definition, Wikimedia brands are shared among the communities who give
them meaning. So in considering this change, the Wikimedia Foundation is
collecting feedback from across our communities. Our goal is to speak with
more than 80% of affiliates and as many individual contributors as possible
before May 2019, when we will offer the Board of Trustees a summary of
community response.

We invite you to look at a project summary [9], the brand research [10],
and the brand strategy suggestion [11] Wolff Olins prepared working with us.

For feedback, please add comments on the Community Review talk page [12] or
email brandproj...@wikimedia.org with direct feedback. You can also use
either of these channels to request to join a group meeting.

We know this is big topic and we’re excited to hear from you!
