Hello Pine,

Sorry, I didn't wanted to mess up this thread, it was just a quick followup
correcting that we may be able to carry on those events despite the
suspension, but indeed it's not related to the Summit anymore (and thinking
better, possibly of very limited interest for the people here in the list,
unless they have some interest on Russian culture and Portugal - in that
case they're very welcome to join this project, just contact me in
private). The reply to WikimediaAnnounce-l was kind of automatic, I really
had no idea what to do with it, next time I'll remove that. Thanks for the
heads up.

Hi Paulo,

As much as I am concerned about the situation between WMPT and AffCom, and
as much as I would like to see more transparency from AffCom, I would like
to request that those subjects be kept separate from this thread which is
primarily about a conference. Also, WikimediaAnnounce-l is for
announcements, and I think that discussion of the situation between WMPT
and AffCom is generally appropriate for Wikimedia-l but not
WikimediaAnnounce-l.

If you would like to discuss the WMPT and AffCom situation further then I
request that you start a separate thread on Wikimedia-l or resume writing
in a previous Wikimedia-l thread that was focused on that topic.

Thank you,

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Summit 2019: Registration now open

2018-11-07 Thread Paulo Santos Perneta
It is very sad that, despite Wikimedia Portugal currently having everything
up to date, being a very active and thriving chapter, being the only
remaining Portuguese-speaking Wikimedia organization in the whole Wikimedia
movement, also acting as a facilitator to all the Wikimedia communities all
over the Portuguese-speaking world on their relation with the rest of the
Wikimedia movement, and having fulfilled all its obligations, including all
those requested by AffCom, AffCom has decided to unilaterally force an
extension of the chapter suspension for more three months, claiming they
need more time to look into the case.
This not only made it impossible or almost impossible to carry on a lot of
activities that were already scheduled for those three months, including
our organization, co-organization and participation on two key national
scope GLAM and FOSS events, including a GLAM promotion event co-organized
with the National Library aimed the divulgation of GLAM partnerships and
projects to other similar institutions in the country, and the first Ubuntu
Conference in Portugal, with an obvious damage of the name of Wikimedia
along those GLAM and FOSS institutions and groups, but effectively blocked
us from taking part on the Wikimedia Summit, as the limit ends next 17
December, much before the new limit of the extension AffCom has imposed.

These are sad times for the Wikimedia movement here in Portugal.

Anyway, I wish the best for those of you that will be attending the
Wikimedia Summit next year, and sincerely hope it will be a success.

While I support the concept of this event in regards to gathering
affiliates and those at WMF who work with affiliates, I feel that I should
remind people that, as interesting as this event will likely be, it is not
an all-Wikimedia summit. I continue to object to the name of the event.
While I believe that I'm a minority of one on this point, I'm okay with
that.

I hope that this meeting will be valuable for the people who participate
and for the organizations which they represent. I'm glad that I attended
the Wikimedia Conference a few years ago, and as tiring as it was, I
consider it to have been one of my highlights of that year. If you can
attend then I encourage you to do so.
