Re: [Wikimedia Brasil] Gap de gênero no WP

2014-01-21 Por tôpico Jessie Wild
Hello everyone! please excuse the english. oona told me this discussion was
happening, so I thought I would pass along the notes I sent around to my
team about the webinar as well:

Unlike past research projects which Jonas referenced, the point of this
research was to look beyond the problems internally to WIkipedia -- i.e.,
why women might be leaving -- and instead focus on whether or not women are
even coming to WIkipedia to begin with.

They studied lots of variables, but interestingly, the only things that
were statistically significant in predicting if someone would be a
Wikipedia contributor or not were *Gender, Internet Skills*, or if they had
a required student assignment. Note that this research was done on young
adults in the United States only.

Main takeaways:

   - *Gender matters, and even more so among high-skilled users* (i.e., the
higher the internet skills, the BIGGER the gap between Wikipedia
   contributions for women and men)
   - *Internet skills matter,* people with low skills don’t contribute to
   WIkipedia regardless of gender
   - *Internet skills have long-term effects* (2009 skills predict behavior
   in 2012!)
   - Other factors do not seem to matter, including:
   - Race/ethnicity
  - socioeconomic status
  - various Internet experience
  - confidence in editing Wikipedia

Someone at the end of the presentation asked the question, So, if you were
the Wikimedia Foundation, what would you do? Unfortunately, not a lot of
ideas came up, but they did say that focused interventions like bringing in
classroom assignments helps, but otherwise the focus should be on lowering
barriers to entry so that it doesn't always bias towards high-skill level
individuals (which also biases towards men, who are then even more likely
than women to edit). I would be interested in hearing more ideas around
this.

Thanks to all and hope you are all well!
Jessie

   http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/events/luncheon/2014/01/hargittai-shaw
   2. habilidade digital,

oi! Please excuse the english - hopefully Google Translate will work just
fine!

One thing I just noticed in the FAQ on meta is a shout-out to Brazil:
*CIS will hire a programme director for the work. The recruitment process
will draw on the best practices Wikimedia used in Brazil and incorporate
active community participation in the process. They will share more info on
this soon.*

While I'm glad to know that they are going to be more transparent and
community driven in India, I also want to make sure they have the chance to
IMPROVE the process we used in Brazil in the hiring of Oona Castro.

I am going to write up a page summarizing the work on br.wikimedia, and
then move it over to meta for reference sake. Would anyone like to help
construct it? The page has to be in English, but it would be great to get a
lot of comments on the comment page *with your reflections on the hiring
process, *and these are more than welcome to be in Portuguese*. *I will
leave a few questions on it to jog your memories a bit, but feel free to
write about anything:

Eu conheço a

Maybe this sort of press/communications training could be on the agenda for
the WikiBrasil conference, since so many people will hopefully be gathered

a fundação tanto do nosso chapter quanto do escritório da WMF no Brasil,
devemos ser requisitados com mais frequência.

saiu a entrevista no O Globo hj.

Re: [Wikimedia Brasil] Imprensa

2012-03-06 Por tôpico Jessie Wild
Sorry to hammer away at this, but it does not make complete sense to me...

...so, for example, the article just published by O Globo[1] which is
included in pt.wikipedia page but not br.wikimedia. This covers something
that obviously is bigger than just Wikipedia: it is the product of a lot of
volunteers who do outreach events and provide coaching and recruit new
participants. This is obviously much bigger than just something that can be
contained in pt.wikipedia, right? (I think we all agree the answer is yes,
based on the many messages that have come across this mailing list
encouraging greater transparency about the project with WMBR.)

or, for example, a lot of the list that is currently on the br. list
also are about Wikipedia specifically (Wikipedia turns 10 years..)?

I personally don't really care about where articles are posted; I just want
to make sure I/we are posting things in places where they are anticipated
and in a way that is comprehensive for the journalists whom this page is
meant to serve!!! So - what if the br.wikimedia link was for articles from
Brazilian journalists? That might be the most straight-forward
classification.

Thoughts?

Found a nice screencasting application for ubuntu - eidete

Though the gnome 3 has its inbuilt screen recording app using
crtl+alt+shift+r
it can record only video, not the audio.

I was looking for a decent screenrecorder with voice.

gtk-recordmydesktop is good. But, we have to configure the parameters to
get video without any scattering effects.

Tried eidete. It is so good. Video is stored as webm format. video/audio
quality is fine.

Check more about it here:
https://launchpad.net/eidete

Recorded a sample screencast - intro to gnome 3 in Tamil.
check it here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eg5h1-YgoJI

Now, you can create screencasts easily with Eidete.

Really interesting research regarding the pilot education program in the
United States. It includes information about the likelihood of students to
continue editing after the classroom projects ends:

Public Policy Initiative motivated students to become Wikipedians

In a paper titled Classroom Wikipedia participation effects on future

contribute[3]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Signpost/Single#cite_note-2
 (presentation
slideshttp://www.slideshare.net/clifflampe/cscw-2012-note-wikipedia-public-policy-initiative),
five Michigan-based researchers looked at a sample of over 400 students who
were involved in a pilot of the WMF education
initiativehttp://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Public_Policy_Initiative
(87%
of whom were native speakers of English), and asked how likely the
student-editors were to be become real editors after the end of their class
projects, and what the relevant factors in such conversions are. They find
that the student retention ratio is higher than the average editor
retention ratio (while only 0.0002% of editors who make one edit become
regulars, about 4% of students have made edits after their course ended).
About 75% of the students preferred the Wikipedia assignment to a regular
one, and major reasons for their enjoyment included the level of engagement
in class, an appreciation of global visibility of the article, and the
exposure to social media.

a Wikipédia e sobre o projeto embaixadores. Estamos preparando o

 http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:Wikimedia_Brasil_Educa%C3%A7%C3%A3o/Tutorial

For the meeting next Saturday, is there a page set-up with an agenda? That
might be helpful, as well. There are probably some items to be discussed
which would not fall under a tutorial category, for example (e.g.,
introductions individual goals, documenting classroom activities via
blog, conducting post-semester analysis).

I would add to the list of things to talk about Role clarification - in
which you discuss as a group the roles and expectations of the campus
ambassadors and the professors, as well as the online ambassadors.
afterwards, i would post the conclusions of your discussion on the meta
pages so that everyone can benefit from the results.

Boa suerte!

[Wikimedia Brasil] Fwd: [Wikimediaindia-l] Technical tutorial/training references and resources for events

2012-02-13 Por tôpico Jessie Wild
oi! cross-posting the below email.

It seems like there are a lot more outreach events going on throughout
Brazil as well, and I think the following email contains some good
resources which could be leveraged by the Brazil community as well!

Wow, the Wikimedia community in India is putting on a tremendous number
of events! http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Events/2011 Congratulations!

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/India_Program/Outreach_Programs is a
very useful resource for people organizing Wikimedia events -- thank
you, Nitika! Also, if you would specifically like a technical component
to your workshop, where people learn to work on MediaWiki and related
Wikimedia technology, you should see the resource page that Naveen started:

http://wiki.wikimedia.in/MediaWiki_Workshop

I'm helping build more tutorial material, suitable for use at a workshop
or similar event. You can see the existing ones here:

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Category:Tutorials

* How to use the MediaWiki API
* How to write a user script or gadget
* How to use and work on our internationalisation/localisation tools
* How to build the Wikipedia Android app
* How to write a simple MediaWiki extension
* How to hack MediaWiki itself (very long!)

If you have questions or requests, please feel free to leave them on my
talk page: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User_talk:Sumanah or reply,
preferably on-list. Thanks.

Just a reminder to everyone: consider applying for the Wikimania
scholarship! WIkimania is a great way for you to meet other Wiki[m/p]ians
from around the world, network, share ideas, and simply enjoy each other's

The application is open for just a few more weeks, and currently there is
only one brasilieiro who has applied...

The Portuguese file for this exists:

I believe that Ale or Tom has a box with a bunch of these already? Maybe
what would be best, though, is to print small handouts of the Cheatsheet
that Jonas passed along, since this will be an inexpensive handout (versus
the pamphlets that are quite expensive due to the quality) (

Boa dia - is there a page where the planning for campus party has begun? I
only see http://br.wikimedia.org/wiki/Campus_Party/2012, which does not
have much information. We should start the planning process, if we truly

oi! feliz ano novo!

I just wanted to follow-up and mention I have started a new page which will
be presented to the candidates with this assignment. The page is here:
http://br.wikimedia.org/wiki/Brazil_National_Program_Consultancy_Tarefa

I need help on a few things:

   - *Listing resources!* At the bottom of the page, there is a space for
helpful resources. I inputted quite a few, but if there are specific help
pages within the Portuguese Wikipedia, these might be particularly useful
   to be listed!
   - *Editing*! Please take a look at it and make sure it is the best
   process, and clearly explained
   - *Translating*! Once completed, it would be great to have a translated
portion of this (the assignment is to all be done in Portuguese, so this
would be good to have in Portuguese as well),

Muita obrigada!

Re: [Wikimedia Brasil] I GP Wikimedia Brasil

2012-01-04 Por tôpico Jessie Wild
Is there any sort of mentoring program established with I GP? You may
already have one planned, but I could see it happening a few different ways:

   - Get ~25-30 Wikipedian volunteers, and have them each be direct mentors
   of 5-10 participants
   - Assign one Wikipedian volunteer to each team to help answer questions
   - Have Wikipedians assigned to the specific articles, and help aid in
the editing questions that may come up when newbies are editing those
   articles directly.

These are only some ideas - I am not sure if you already have something in
place! But, it could be a fantastic way to mentor the new editors!

Hey everyone!

Wow this looks awesome - what good english you have! :) I updated a few
things in English to make the verb tenses flow together a bit more, but in
general it was all great! I also changed the wording around the mention of
Positivo, since we have not in-fact entered into any formal agreement
with them, so we want to be careful of the wording.

So, I just need to run this past the people who manage our blog, and then
I'll try to have it posted by the end of this week! Thanks for all the hard

 Ni!

[Wikimedia Brasil] Blog about the GP?

2011-12-14 Por tôpico Jessie Wild
oi brasileiros :)

It looks like things with the GP are off to a good start! Parabens!

Barry suggested and I think it is a good idea - would someone be willing to
write a guest blog (in both Portuguese and English) for the Wikimedia
Foundation blog?[1]

It could just (1) announce the competition, (2) highlight the reasons for
having it (to improve the quality of essential articles in portuguese), and
(3) explain how it works.

It could be good publicity for the competition! Maybe we could get the
number of contributors well-above the 50 person mark!...It could also be a
good practice for the blog work that you all have been discussing lately :)

If people are interested, I suggest writing it somewhere on
http://br.wikimedia.org/ and when you are done, I can transfer it over to
our Wordpress account. What do you think?

educação no Brasil[1].

http://br.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia:%C3%81gora

* Junte-se a uma conversa via IRC [3] amanhã, 13 de dezembro, às 19h de São
Paulo (9h UTC).

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_-_Brazil_programs/Education_program/pt

Abraços :)
Jessie

== English message ==

Greetings to everyone!

I hope this email finds you all well!

I wanted to write about the staffing for the Brazil Education Program
Contractor position[1]. As you all know, this position has been open for a
few months now - it is a very demanding position to staff, since the
individual will be working remotely from the rest of the Global Education
team (which is spread around the world) we want to make sure the contractor
is mature, gets along with the community, and is self-sufficient.

We have gotten several applications, but the most promising is that from
the Wikimedian Everton Zanella Alvarenga, also known as Tom. I don't need
to proclaim his work to you all, you can view it for yourselves across this
mailing list, the Wikimedia Brasil wiki and his activities supporting a
free culture! Most pertinently, though, you can view the first drafts he
has put together regarding the Brazil Education Pilot Project on the
meta-wiki, which is still under-development and in need of much input[2]!
The proposal is to have him work as a part-time contractor on helping
facilitate a Brazil Education Pilot Project next semester.

Before moving ahead with the contract, though, Tom and I both wanted to
know: what do you think of this idea? We didn't have as open of a process
for this position, due to the low-volume of applications, so we want to
make sure everyone feels comfortable with the decision. Tom recognizes more
than most the importance of having broad community involvement, and though
he is very great - he is not great enough to single-handedly figure out the
whole Brazil Education Pilot alone! :)

Two places for us to gather some feedback on this contract:

* Start a thread on the Wikimedia Brasil Ágora:
http://br.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia:%C3%81gora

* Join for an IRC [3]conversation tomorrow, 13 December @ 7pm, BRST (9pm
UTC). (Note: if other times work better for the majority, Tom has said his
schedule is open! Please just propose them, and we'll go with majority.)

And of course, the place to gather feedback on the pilot project:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_-_Brazil_programs/Education_program/pt

Dear colleagues,

WMF is now seeking fellowship applicants and project ideas for the Community
Fellowships Program http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Fellowships.
Community members from all Wikimedia projects and all languages are
strongly encouraged to apply by the deadline of January 15th 2012! Could
you please help spread the word by sharing this open call in your
communities?

Wikimedia Community Fellows are spearheading community projects,
undertaking research, and piloting new models for engagement to help scale
and increase sustainability of volunteer work in the Wikimedia movement.
The Foundation provides intensive, time-limited financial and logistical
support for fellows to focus on projects of strategic importance.
Submissions for Spring 2012 are encouraged to focus on the theme of
improving editor retention and increasing participation in Wikimedia
Projects.

If you'd like to work with WMF on projects to boost participation and
retention, or know someone who should be recommended for a fellowship, or
if you've got ideas for a fellowship project WMF could support, we'd like
to hear from you! Please visit

Why weren't we consulted about this?

I don't intend to answer in name of WMF, but Jessie has sent an email
on 10th of November. Then we had 9 days to discuss it.

Besides that, I was also wondering why this job position if we have
 this other

 http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/RFP/Global_Education_Program_Consultant

My question is how both job positions fit with each other? There seems
to be a connection, but it isn't clear to me and think important to
Wikimedia community (beyond Brazil) understand it.

  1) Michael Page does not understand the job and does not have the
competence to recognize the right people, not even for a raw
  selection.

I don't know anything about Michael Page to say about their
competence, but I have to say I am also a bit skeptical about it and I
hope I am wrong. This is a reason I proposed a more open selection
process and I hope it's possible to Michael Page do so.

  2) I am not the only one here who could have arranged a pro-bono
headhunter at least as good with one or two phone calls.

You don't know our country (at all, don't fool yourselves) and you
don't know the resources our community has at its disposal. If we do
not cooperate, you will be wasting money, resources and opportunities
  all the time.

Abdo, I believe they have used Carol's recommendations:

 http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global/Brazil/BCP_Recommendations#Establish_a_WMF_presence_in_Brazil_and_hire_a_National_Program_Director

So I believe the discussion on this was open. Maybe a notice about
Carol's report was sent to the mailing list, I cannot remember, and we
haven't seen it because of the sea of arguments ad hominem and some
useless messages sometimes we have here.

Finally, on a funny detail, I don't think this person should have
director in his title. It gives the wrong impression towards others
and the community itself, and we Brazilians are very easily impressed.

Maybe you are right and another name for this person who will
coordinate a national program would be better. But I believe this is a
detail which can be solved easily.

Actually, my personal opinion is that this whole Brazilian office
affair is a huge mistake, but that was not even put on the table for
  us to discuss.

I am not sure about this being a mistake. My feeling is that it's good
idea to have someone to coordinate a project such as Wikipedia
Ambassadors. Besides incredible people working here as volunteers and
doing a great job to start a legal entity, *maybe* the group is no
mature enough (or don't have volunteers enough) to lead an important
project such this one. As I am saying for years, using the knowledge
*locked* inside Brazilian universities (mainly when paid by public
money) is very strategical and will help to improve the commons of
  free knowledge.

But as I said during the last Wikimania discussion, things should be
more open and transparent. Besides I tend to think a good idea to have
this director (or whatever name it will be), it's strange that
firstly we were going to have an office, then we would not have
anymore, and, finally, we are going to have. There are discussions in
between that the Brazilian community is not part of it and maybe this
is an atitude from WMF bothering you. (My feeling is that this can
indicate WMF perception about our community - or not community ; )

  Hugs,

  Tom

Is MichaelPage working pro-bono for the foundation?

 No.

 That is an interesting question.

I was wondering how could we make a process of hiring a person more
 collaborative.

For instance, suppose all candidates have to give ideas to improve
Wikipedia? Wouldn't be a good idea to have all these ideas gathered
and organized somewhere (a wiki? ;) to we work better on this
 particular problem proposed?

This is an interesting idea; we should explore further. As part of the
final rounds for candidates, we will have them do some sort of a project,
and I love the idea of having this be more open to leverage ideas and
thoughts. Maybe a set up like the way the board of directors application
process works for Wikimedia (except, I should note, in the end without the
direct voting, as there will have to be the executive decision by Sue /
Barry).

Thoughts?
Jessie

Thanks for your help, Beria!

(And of course, I'm sure there is use for this flyer in both PT and PT-BR,
so no value is lost as far as i can tell...)

[Wikimedia Brasil] MediaWiki volunteer brochure

2011-11-16 Por tôpico Jessie Wild
Ola!

This was just put up on commons by Guillaume, which I think is a
tremendously helpful flyer for any sort of outreach events that we do
throughout the movement, particularly regarding MediaWiki.

It would be cool to have it translated into Portuguese, especially, I am
thinking, before Campus Party!
