Re: [Wikimedia Brasil] Gap de gênero no WP
Hello everyone! please excuse the english. oona told me this discussion was happening, so I thought I would pass along the notes I sent around to my team about the webinar as well: Unlike past research projects which Jonas referenced, the point of this research was to look beyond the problems internally to WIkipedia -- i.e., why women might be leaving -- and instead focus on whether or not women are even coming to WIkipedia to begin with. They studied lots of variables, but interestingly, the only things that were statistically significant in predicting if someone would be a Wikipedia contributor or not were *Gender, Internet Skills*, or if they had a required student assignment. Note that this research was done on young adults in the United States only. Main takeaways: - *Gender matters, and even more so among high-skilled users* (i.e., the higher the internet skills, the BIGGER the gap between Wikipedia contributions for women and men) - *Internet skills matter,* people with low skills don’t contribute to WIkipedia regardless of gender - *Internet skills have long-term effects* (2009 skills predict behavior in 2012!) - Other factors do not seem to matter, including: - Race/ethnicity - socioeconomic status - various Internet experience - confidence in editing Wikipedia Someone at the end of the presentation asked the question, So, if you were the Wikimedia Foundation, what would you do? Unfortunately, not a lot of ideas came up, but they did say that focused interventions like bringing in classroom assignments helps, but otherwise the focus should be on lowering barriers to entry so that it doesn't always bias towards high-skill level individuals (which also biases towards men, who are then even more likely than women to edit). I would be interested in hearing more ideas around this. Thanks to all and hope you are all well! Please excuse the english - hopefully Google Translate will work just fine! One thing I just noticed in the FAQ on meta is a shout-out to Brazil: *CIS will hire a programme director for the work. The recruitment process will draw on the best practices Wikimedia used in Brazil and incorporate active community participation in the process. They will share more info on this soon.* While I'm glad to know that they are going to be more transparent and community driven in India, I also want to make sure they have the chance to IMPROVE the process we used in Brazil in the hiring of Oona Castro. Maybe this sort of press/communications training could be on the agenda for the WikiBrasil conference, since so many people will hopefully be gathered in one place! Of course, it should be optional, as not all attendees would be interested. Re: [Wikimedia Brasil] Imprensa
Sorry to hammer away at this, but it does not make complete sense to me... ...so, for example, the article just published by O Globo[1] which is included in pt.wikipedia page but not br.wikimedia. This covers something that obviously is bigger than just Wikipedia: it is the product of a lot of volunteers who do outreach events and provide coaching and recruit new participants. This is obviously much bigger than just something that can be contained in pt.wikipedia, right? (I think we all agree the answer is yes, based on the many messages that have come across this mailing list encouraging greater transparency about the project with WMBR.) or, for example, a lot of the list that is currently on the br. list also are about Wikipedia specifically (Wikipedia turns 10 years..)? I personally don't really care about where articles are posted; I just want to make sure I/we are posting things in places where they are anticipated and in a way that is comprehensive for the journalists whom this page is meant to serve!!! They find that the student retention ratio is higher than the average editor retention ratio (while only 0.0002% of editors who make one edit become regulars, about 4% of students have made edits after their course ended). About 75% of the students preferred the Wikipedia assignment to a regular one, and major reasons for their enjoyment included the level of engagement in class, an appreciation of global visibility of the article, and the exposure to social media. -- Forwarded message -- From: Wikipedia Signpost wikipediasignp...@gmail.com Date: Mon, Feb 27, 2012 at 4:45 PM Subject: [Foundation-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] The Signpost -- Volume 8, Issue 09 -- 27 February 2012 To: wikimediaannounce-l wikimediaannounc...@lists.wikimedia.org News and notes: Finance meeting fallout, Gardner recommendations forthcoming http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2012-02-27/News_and_notes Recent research: Gender gap and conflict aversion; collaboration on breaking news; effects of leadership on participation; legacy of Public Policy Initiative http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2012-02-27/Recent_research Discussion report: Focus on admin conduct and editor retention http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2012-02-27/Discussion_report WikiProject report: Just don't call it sci-fi: WikiProject Science Fiction http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2012-02-27/WikiProject_report Featured content: By plane, by ship, and by stagecoach: Featured content goes trekking this week http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2012-02-27/Featured_content Arbitration report: Final decision in TimidGuy ban appeal, one case remains open http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2012-02-27/Arbitration_report Technology report: 1.19 deployment stress, Meta debates whether to enforce SUL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2012-02-27/Technology_report Single page view http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Signpost/Single PDF version http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book:Wikipedia_Signpost/2012-02-27 http://identi.ca/wikisignpost / https://twitter.com/wikisignpost -- Wikipedia Signpost Staff http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost ___ Please note: all replies sent to this mailing list will be immediately directed to Foundation-L, the public mailing list about the Wikimedia Foundation and its projects. oi! feliz ano novo! I just wanted to follow-up and mention I have started a new page which will be presented to the candidates with this assignment. The page is here: http://br.wikimedia.org/wiki/Brazil_National_Program_Consultancy_Tarefa I need help on a few things: - *Listing resources!* At the bottom of the page, there is a space for helpful resources. I inputted quite a few, but if there are specific help pages within the Portuguese Wikipedia, these might be particularly useful to be listed! - *Editing*! Please take a look at it and make sure it is the best process, and clearly explained - *Translating*! Once completed, it would be great to have a translated portion of this (the assignment is to all be done in Portuguese, so this would be good to have in Portuguese as well), Muita obrigada! Re: [Wikimedia Brasil] I GP Wikimedia Brasil
Is there any sort of mentoring program established with I GP? You may already have one planned, but I could see it happening a few different ways: - Get ~25-30 Wikipedian volunteers, and have them each be direct mentors of 5-10 participants - Assign one Wikipedian volunteer to each team to help answer questions - Have Wikipedians assigned to the specific articles, and help aid in the editing questions that may come up when newbies are editing those articles directly. These are only some ideas - I am not sure if you already have something in place! But, it could be a fantastic way to mentor the new editors! It looks like things with the GP are off to a good start! Parabens! Barry suggested and I think it is a good idea - would someone be willing to write a guest blog (in both Portuguese and English) for the Wikimedia Foundation blog?[1] It could just (1) announce the competition, (2) highlight the reasons for having it (to improve the quality of essential articles in portuguese), and (3) explain how it works. It could be good publicity for the competition! Maybe we could get the number of contributors well-above the 50 person mark!...It could also be a good practice for the blog work that you all have been discussing lately :) If people are interested, I suggest writing it somewhere on http://br.wikimedia.org/ and when you are done, I can transfer it over to our Wordpress account.
I hope this email finds you all well! I wanted to write about the staffing for the Brazil Education Program Contractor position[1]. As you all know, this position has been open for a few months now - it is a very demanding position to staff, since the individual will be working remotely from the rest of the Global Education team (which is spread around the world) we want to make sure the contractor is mature, gets along with the community, and is self-sufficient. We have gotten several applications, but the most promising is that from the Wikimedian Everton Zanella Alvarenga, also known as Tom. I don't need to proclaim his work to you all, you can view it for yourselves across this mailing list, the Wikimedia Brasil wiki and his activities supporting a free culture! Most pertinently, though, you can view the first drafts he has put together regarding the Brazil Education Pilot Project on the meta-wiki, which is still under-development and in need of much input[2]! The proposal is to have him work as a part-time contractor on helping facilitate a Brazil Education Pilot Project next semester. Before moving ahead with the contract, though, Tom and I both wanted to know: what do you think of this idea? We didn't have as open of a process for this position, due to the low-volume of applications, so we want to make sure everyone feels comfortable with the decision. Tom recognizes more than most the importance of having broad community involvement, and though he is very great - he is not great enough to single-handedly figure out the whole Brazil Education Pilot alone! :) Two places for us to gather some feedback on this contract: * Start a thread on the Wikimedia Brasil Ágora: http://br.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia:%C3%81gora * Join for an IRC [3]conversation tomorrow, 13 December @ 7pm, BRST (9pm UTC). (Note: if other times work better for the majority, Tom has said his schedule is open! Please just propose them, and we'll go with majority.) Besides that, I was also wondering why this job position if we have this other http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/RFP/Global_Education_Program_Consultant My question is how both job positions fit with each other? There seems to be a connection, but it isn't clear to me and think important to Wikimedia community (beyond Brazil) understand it. 1) Michael Page does not understand the job and does not have the competence to recognize the right people, not even for a raw selection. I don't know anything about Michael Page to say about their competence, but I have to say I am also a bit skeptical about it and I hope I am wrong. This is a reason I proposed a more open selection process and I hope it's possible to Michael Page do so. 2) I am not the only one here who could have arranged a pro-bono headhunter at least as good with one or two phone calls. You don't know our country (at all, don't fool yourselves) and you don't know the resources our community has at its disposal. If we do not cooperate, you will be wasting money, resources and opportunities all the time. Abdo, I believe they have used Carol's recommendations: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global/Brazil/BCP_Recommendations#Establish_a_WMF_presence_in_Brazil_and_hire_a_National_Program_Director So I believe the discussion on this was open. Maybe a notice about Carol's report was sent to the mailing list, I cannot remember, and we haven't seen it because of the sea of arguments ad hominem and some useless messages sometimes we have here. Finally, on a funny detail, I don't think this person should have director in his title. It gives the wrong impression towards others and the community itself, and we Brazilians are very easily impressed. Maybe you are right and another name for this person who will coordinate a national program would be better. But I believe this is a detail which can be solved easily. Actually, my personal opinion is that this whole Brazilian office affair is a huge mistake, but that was not even put on the table for us to discuss. I am not sure about this being a mistake. My feeling is that it's good idea to have someone to coordinate a project such as Wikipedia Ambassadors. Besides incredible people working here as volunteers and doing a great job to start a legal entity, *maybe* the group is no mature enough (or don't have volunteers enough) to lead an important project such this one. As I am saying for years, using the knowledge *locked* inside Brazilian universities (mainly when paid by public money) is very strategical and will help to improve the commons of free knowledge. But as I said during the last Wikimania discussion, things should be more open and transparent. Besides I tend to think a good idea to have this director (or whatever name it will be), it's strange that firstly we were going to have an office, then we would not have anymore, and, finally, we are going to have. There are discussions in between that the Brazilian community is not part of it and maybe this is an atitude from WMF bothering you. (My feeling is that this can indicate WMF perception about our community - or not community ; ) Hugs, Tom ___ WikimediaBR-l mailing list WikimediaBR-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediabr-l ___ WikimediaBR-l mailing list WikimediaBR-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediabr-l ___ WikimediaBR-l mailing list WikimediaBR-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediabr-l -- *Jessie Wild Global Development, Manager Wikimedia Foundation * ___ WikimediaBR-l mailing list WikimediaBR-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediabr-l
