[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Wmfcc-l] Professional Video Production Village Pump Proposal

2013-02-15 Thread noopur

Dear all,
*message attached below*
FYI. I do recollect there being a thread where many of us gave suggestions on what videos we should have, especially for outreach in Indian languages. It would be great if we could propose them here and someone can pick them up to make a video.
Best,

Hello everyone on ComCom,
Last year (2012) along with the fundraising team and a few contractors we interviewed 100 Wikipedians at Wikimania which resulted in an awareness campaign launched in US, UK, NZ, AU CA:
http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Thank_You_Allhttp://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Thank_You_Main
Almost all the feedback was positive, and we learned alot. (thank you again to those on this list who were in it)
This year (2013) I'm aiming to make (and help others to make) a 2 minute video that hopefully 'goes viral' and makes the world laugh, cry and learn all about Wikipedia. In order to do that I'm going to be engaging and collaborating with professional producers from all around the world and producing many videos that cover a wide range of content and style.
Here is an example:
Right now we have a small test running for the Valentine's Day holiday which went out in an email to several thousand U.S.-only donors:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLHZUIVdPU0
Sadly, we have only so much of a budget to work with. Videos can be expensive to produce and I am but one lone dude and I don't scale.
Solution!:
So I'm looking for professional film/video/creative volunteers to help:
If you know any video agencies or individual producers, camera operators, motion graphics artists, et cetera who like Wikipedia enough to be willing to donate their services to promote and inform the world about Wikipedia, please connect me with them.
Also, since Wikipedia is open and collaborative, I thought that video collaboration should also be left open to the community, so I just wrote this on the Village Pump Idea Lab:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(idea_lab)#Community-Driven_Video_Production_PortalIt is a proposal to create a forum where anyone can propose ideas that should be made into video. Those ideas can be polished and then a producer who is willing to volunteer (Wikipedian or otherwise) can read through scripts and produce the content they want to.
This forum would serve video production on Wikipedia generally, not just for the work that i'm doing. Thanks for reading I'd be happy to know your thoughts.Victor

[Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia Hyderabad Meetup with CIS A2K Programme Director Mr. Vishnu : Minutes of Meeting

2013-02-15 Thread Abhijith Jayanthi
Hi All,

The following are the minutes of the meeting:

*In Attendance: *
Mr. Vishnu - CIS A2K Programme Director
Mr. Abhijith Jayanthi
Mr. Rahimanuddin Shaik
Dr. Rajasekhar
Mr. Tausif
Mr. Sai Anudeep
Ms. Akhila Thumma
Mr. Veera Venkata Chowdary (User: Veevan)

*Minutes of Meeting:*

(1) The meeting opened with a round of introductions about self and then
Mr. Vishnu introduced CIS and A2K Programme - little history and his
proposed ideas for shaping up the future course of the Programme and open
up for discussions. The summary of the presentation and
comments/suggestions that followed as indicated below:

*Summary*
(1) Greater Coordination is envisaged between CIS/ India Chapter + SIGs and
the Wiki Community at large

(2) Volunteering efforts of Wiki Community (snow balls) and the engagement
needs to be better utilized with the support of CIS (positioning the start
point for the snow ball to start rolling) so that impact is better
captured.

*Suggestions/Comments*
Two approaches to volunteer engagement were suggested - merits/demerits
need to be evaluated and are indicated below

(a) Recognition in terms of participation certificates/ appreciation
letters and setting an hierarchy of achievement will motivate the
volunteers and engage them better.

(b) Wiki Volunteering should stem out of passion for knowledge and should
be structured on a ''No - Expectations-in-Return Model

(3) Mr. Vishnu gave an update on the institutions in Hyderabad that he is
trying to connect with (initial level)

(4) Few proposals were discussed as part of the initiative:

(a) Engaging on a Mobile Model for Wiki Academies: With volunteers and SIGs
taking active role in engaging on a small-groups/local setup structures -
making Wiki Academy a more sustained dialogue rather than touch and go
activity (one day engagements); move towards a longer engagement pattern

(b) WikiRTI#: A platform/initiative was discussed and received support from
everyone present - to create a repository for anyone to upload RTI
responses and thus move towards a general archive/knowledge bank schematic.

# Mr. Tausif and Mr. Abhijith will be coordinating on creating a template
design for this platform - anyone who is interested and wants to be part of
this activity may contact Mr. Abhijith at abhij...@wikimedia.in

(5) Mr. Vishnu proposed a tentative plan to engage a staff member based out
of Hyderabad to roll-out activities in Hyderabad and around the state of
Andhra Pradesh; proposal for which is expected to be discussed before
taking forward. Mr. Abhijith expressed interest to make a necessary
donation for the same post finalization

The meeting concluded with all the participants seeking to have a greater
engagement with A2K Team in Hyderabad involving various languages.

regards
Abhijith

It is a proposal to create a forum where anyone can propose ideas that

 FYI,
Wikimedia Ukraine is initiating a new photo contest – “Wiki Loves Earth”,
its goal being collecting pictures of Ukraine Natural Heritage sites and
Landscape and Ornamental Gardening objects for illustrating articles in the
 worldwide free Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia.
Everybody can take part in the competition. A registration on Wikimedia
Commons (one of many Wikipedia sister projects) is required. You are to
find in the list of natural heritage objects the ones you know of, take a
picture of them yourself (it could be done anytime, previously or starting
now) and upload them to Commons (during April 15 – May 15, 2013). The
authors of the best pictures will be awarded with prizes. The results
announcement and the awarding ceremony will be held in Kyiv, on June 5,
2013, on the World Environment Day.
The Organizational Committee has already started preparation work on the
competition list, and almost 8 000 of entries are to be included there.
Nature reserves, landscape parks, protected areas, natural heritage sites,
botanical (dendrological), zoological gardens and parks, and ornamenting
gardening objects will be in the list.
Yuri Perohanych, Wikimedia Ukraine Executive Director, said that this
photo contest will draw the society’s attention to the existing problems of
Ukraine natural heritage protection, and the contest itself is to show the
perspectives of green/eco tourism in Ukraine.
As Yevhen Buket, the contest coordinator, pointed out, the idea to
initiate such a competition has arisen after conducting a successful
international photo contest Wiki Loves Monuments in Ukraine this September.
The goal of the contest was collecting pictures of cultural heritage
 monuments of Ukraine.
Wikimedia Ukraine invited Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of
Ukraine, environmental organizations, as well as donors and sponsors, to
help with the organization of the competition and contribute to the contest
 prize fund.

I don't know the actual history of the term 'Indic'. However, I know
pieces of it and why it's a bad idea to use the term.

 1. The languages spoken in India are from very diverse language families
with very different origins. The biggest group as of now is the Indo-Aryan
subfamily of Indo-European. Dravidian languages are the next most spoken
family of languages. Other languages belong to Austro-asiatic and
Tibeto-Burman families. Some languages are language isolates.

 2. The reasons why the term Indic would have been applied are the
 following (I speculate here):

 a) due to a number of cognates that exist due to centuries of substratum
and ad stratum influence or false cognates that exist in any two languages,
people mistakenly think of them as one family.

 b) there's a prevalent mistaken belief about Sanskrit as a mother language
of all languages (in India and elsewhere!). Saying Bengali came from
Sanskrit is like saying chicken came out of crocodiles. Saying Konkani came
out of Sanskrit is like saying whales evolved from sharks.

 c) there's one genuine reason, which is that, aside from the evolution of
the languages themselves, scripts evolved in a more convergent fashion (not
 100%).

 3. Why is it not good to refer to all languages spoken in India as Indic
 languages?

 a) The term Indic specifically referred to a certain sub family of
 languages.
 b) People then tend lump together tools. The biggest casualty so far is
the way unicode inherited inscript and messed up Tamil and Malayalam
 scripts for once.

 4) Wherever possible, the accurate and unambiguous phrase languages
spoken in India shall be used.

 - Sundar

That language is an instrument of human reason, and not merely a medium
for the expression of thought, is a truth generally admitted.

 Dear Tejaswini and Friends,

It is an interesting and pertinent issue. I do completely concur with
Tejaswini on the problem of 'using philological classifications and
terminology'. However, it will be interesting to track the history of how
we have ended up with the term 'Indic', in the computing context. Do
friends on the list know of any history of computing terms and how 'Indic'
 has come to be used?

Would be useful if any body can shed light on this and let us also put
 this up on Wikipedia.

The Wiktionary entry for 'Indic' is here
 https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Indic

Look forward to more conversations on this.

 Vishnu

[Wikimediaindia-l] Deadlines for some upcoming opportunities (GSoC, Wikimania other conferences)

2013-02-15 Thread Sumana Harihareswara
Abhijith,

I'm sorry. I was under the impression that someone else had already
posted about new grant opportunities to this list back when the IEG
opened for applications; it did get announced in the monthly WMF blog
post, wikimedia-l, the Wikipedia Signpost, and similar places. So I
must have filed something in the wrong place in my memory. :( I apologize.

So let me spread the word now about some other upcoming deadlines:

The scholarship deadline for Wikimania 2013 (Hong Kong, 7-11 August) is
in one week: 22 February 2013 23:59 UTC
https://wikimania2013.wikimedia.org/wiki/Scholarships. The talk
proposal deadline is 30 April
https://wikimania2013.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions.

I also want to draw your attention to Open Source Bridge, Allied Media
Conference, and the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing.
These are conferences that are interested in empowering everyone, using
technology, and have a focus on diversity and social justice. If you
lead a session at one of these conferences, you are eligible to apply
for Wikimedia Foundation's Participation Support subsidies for travel
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Participation:Support. Last year, the
open source and Wikipedia sessions at Grace Hopper and Open Source
Bridge were very well-attended.

Allied Media Conference: 20-23 June, Detroit, Michigan, USA. Call for
proposals deadline: 8 March.
http://alliedmedia.org/news/2013/02/01/its-time-propose-session-amc2013-ready-steady-go

Open Source Bridge: 18-21 June, Portland, Oregon, USA. Call for
proposals deadline: 9 March.
http://opensourcebridge.org/blog/2013/01/2013-call-for-proposals-now-open/

Grace Hopper: 2-5 October, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Call for
proposals deadline: 15 March.
http://gracehopper.org/2013/participate/call-for-participation/

Go ahead and submit stuff! And remember, it's okay to submit multiple
proposals per conference.

MediaWiki is going to apply to participate in Google Summer of Code
again this year as a mentoring organization. Students aiming to
participate should look at this timeline:
https://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/events/google/gsoc2013 and remember
that their applications will be due on 3 May. In GSoC, college and
graduate students work on open source projects remotely, mentored by
skilled developers. Students who successfully complete the program
receive USD5000 in total.

And finally, if you're interested in attending AdaCamp in San Francisco
8-9 June 2013 (to work on supporting women in open technology and open
culture), please fill out
http://adainitiative.org/2013/01/interested-in-attending-an-adacamp-in-san-francisco/
and indicate whether you would need travel assistance. ...this is not a
full application to attend AdaCamp San Francisco, just a way to gauge
interest. We will contact you with application details when applications
open.

Please feel free to forward!

 22 February: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG#ieg-reviewing

Open discussion and evaluation of proposals is intended to encourage
diversity and innovation in the grants made, by bringing multiple
perspectives to the selection process. Funding limits the amount of
Individual Engagement Grants we are able to make in each round, and
proposals are carefully evaluated and selected according to
 pre-determined criteria

 Hope this is of interest!

 Hi All,

There is a wiki academy planned on 19th February, 2013 at BVRIT.
The wikiacademy will be essentially an awareness session about wikipedia
and other wikimedia sister projects, with an editing session on wikipedia.
More details on wikiacademy can be had from :
 http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Wiki_Academy
I would like to invite people to help me in making this wiki academy a
good event to increase contributor strength to wikipedia and increase
 awareness of wikimedia.
Please contact me if you are interested in co organising this event with
 me.
