was Siddharth Suryanarayan and not Narayan. User:FilmLover1426 changed the
name but when it came to moving the page, she told me, I need to contact
some one to have it changed, inspite of me telling her, she could do it
herself. Then, there came an issue of Reliable sources, she argued that the
 tweets would be sufficient.

Another case, this time more successsful, would be of the Bangalore
Helicopter pictures. I found it on Twitter, got in touch with the fellow
who uploaded, but got no result. But then, a friend of his, who accompanied
him on the ride, had uploaded to FlickR, and thanks to a mail sent by me,
AroundTheGlobe and AshLin, he released his images under CC-BY-SA.

I'd concentrate more on socio-economic forums online than Twitter for
 getting new people to Wikipedia.

Getting Wikipedians to Twitter is easy, the reverse is a bit tough.

Thank you.

This body of data is fascinatingly insightful. I should hope the foundation
folks are taking notes. I will ensure I represent this point about the
consequences of social media personally with the greatest intensity I can
gather to the appropriate foundation folks during my next trip to Delhi.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Ads Injected into Wikipedia?

2012-03-11 Thread Aditya Sengupta
A friend got in touch with me about this. He is currently seeing
advertisements on Wikipedia pages (on all pages except the home page). Here
is a link to a screenshot:

http://i.imgur.com/dhKyR.jpg

These advertisements were not visible to him when I asked him to check
through the secure WM server. These advertisements are also not visible to
him on any other web page. To the bottom right of each ad, there is some
text that says, ads not by this site. I've taken a quick look through the
page source he forwarded, nothing looks untoward. His right-click menu does
not appear when he right-clicks on the ad.

He is based out of Mumbai and ISP is Tata Teleservices Maharashtra Ltd.
His IP address is 114.143.88.193 (or was, while he accessed this page; I've
since had him change his IP address since I'm sharing this one). I'm not
sure if this issue is restricted to Mumbai; since the IP address shows up
in Pune when I try to geolocate it (though I understand this is fairly
common).

The link he is directed to when he clicks the ad is this:
http://www.inkfruit.com/combo-landing?utm_source=CMP1002Comboutm_medium=CPMutm_content=combobannerutm_campaign=Combo.
I'm adding this here and copying the founder of Inkfruit since the campaign
data in the URL parameters may help identify the problem (also, I'm not
sure if Inkfruit is aware of this campaign).

I've copied my friend here in case there are further questions he could
help answer.

Could this be a case of DPI by his ISP, or simply malware on his machine?
If it were the former, what would be the legal status of the issue?

I'm not sure Inkfruit is even aware the DOM injection campaign is even
happening. Possibly a rogue advertising agency; or perhaps the writer of
the virus is using a regular ad-network's API. I'll wait for Kashyap to
comment though, he may be able to identify which agency/network is running
that specific campaign.

Yes- if there is a yellow board that declares the building as a Prohibited

of these buildings- such as the RBI building. These boards are required to
be registered with the police/government, so it isn't like anyone can put

Everything else is fair game- as long as you are not trespassing on their

 PS:

 1.
During the photowalk, some of the participants who were taking pictures
of Bombay House were interrupted by private security personnel and asked to
handover their cameras so that the pictures could be removed. Pranav
and Aditya Sengupta, who were among them, peacefully put forth the fact
that they were not not breaking any laws by photographing the structure
from the outside since it was not a legally protected one. They were
standing on the road, and not trespassing. To resolve the matter, Aditya,
Pranav and Krutikaa Jawanjal accompanied the security personnel to the
police station where they explained that they were within their rights to
do what they did, and that citizens of the country need not take prior
permission to take exterior photographs of private property that was not
accorded legal protection. The PSI on duty made a noting in his station
diary and informed us that Bombay House has security fears, which is why
one should speak to their bosses before taking pictures, but agreed with
them per se that there is no law that prohibits people from taking pictures
 there.

 2.
The group that went to Bombay House (and subsequently to Yazdani Bakery,
St. Thomas Cathedral) and other places was delayed owing to the incident
at Bombay House and discovered serendipitously that entry to INS Vikrant
was open. Covering Vikrant took a while, adding to the delay. Consequently
they (this includes me) never reached HBCSE but uploaded from home
instead. Although we did get several good contributions from the
participants in this group as well, I do recognise that it may have been
nice if we could have joined in with the participants who uploaded together
 at HBCSE. I apologise.

I am aware of quite a few PR and SMM agencies that edit Wikipedia and they

I welcome this endeavour by P. and Moksh.

I have three suggestions for inclusion here, based on recent experiences:
copyrights/copyvio, notability; and some emphasis on verifiability.

 hi,

The editing of Wikipedia by PR and social media agencies has been
controversial. It might raise eyebrows that you're going to inform
them how to edit Wikipedia. However, they will learn to edit even
without Wikipedian help. I think it is better to engage than to shy
 away.

Also, suggest that some or all of them who attend the Workshop be
invited for the city meetups and even join the mailing lists.

This is to inform you that Moksh and I have been invited to conduct a
one hour workshop this Friday, 6 January 2012 at Text100, a PR firm (who

relayed live to all their offices across India and possibly other
  countries as well.

We will be talking about the Wikipedia Philosophy/5 Pillars,
Reliable sources, editing tutorial and COI - what to avoid etc. Any
suggestions on other inclusions would be appreciated.

  Kind Regards,

CoI is much much more important in this context.

I'd have said CoI would have been more tan sufficient had I been asked
this a couple of months ago- but no, the problems are more fundamental.
Quite often, it is not clear to them that an entity should not have a page
in the first place; when they put up a page, they often simply copy text
right over from a press release or the client's website; and the sources
used (if at all) are usually first/second party.

Aakash is basically an Android tablet. So if we create an offline version
of Wikipedia for all Android devices, [India specific], I guess that should
 do? Right?

This version of Aakash uses Android- the one that Datawind is making for
the first pilot run (100,000 devices).

The next version of Aakash will *likely* use Android too. There is no
guarantee that Datawind will make that version- the price point will be
determined by a government bidding process and multiple manufacturers (all
those who pass the technical evaluation) will be invited to manufacture and
sell tablets at that price point- on a rate card contract system.

There are efforts underway to port Debian to the tablet, as some folks at
the IITs/MHRD aren't too happy with the reliance on Google. The current
version does not have the Android Market- despite talks with Google. This
shouldn't be a problem for Wikipedia-offline for the tablet though, since
that will be FOSS.

Jessie has spoken to the professor from IITB (Kannan Moudgalya) who is on
the standing committee of the National Mission on Education through ICT
(under which the Aakash project, among others, falls). She has also spoken
to the CEO of one of the other manufacturers- Datawind is only one of many
companies that are bidding for this project- they won the bid for the pilot
run. I have not been following this project for the past two weeks or so
(since the WikiConference)- the bidding for the second version of Aakash
was on at the time. I'm not aware of what the current status is. I'll be
visiting IITB during Scipy this weekend, so I'll know more then.

About offline-Wikipedia, work has already commenced on porting Kiwix to
Android (3 weeks ago by Emmanuel, IIRC).

tl;dr: The foundation is talking to folks behind the Aakash tablet.

@Hisham, Jessie: Any updates on getting the sample tablets from the
manufacturer?

in which it simultaneously describes hundreds of protesters *and* that
all 21 who protested were arrested.

 Go figure.

The article that's been created out of the controversy is a storm in a
teacup (and as such is hardly notable) but the storm was so small it was
barely noticeable - and would have stayed that way except for the
 misreporting of it.

I must say I was slightly disappointed at the size of the protest. We heard
the protest begin, we went around asking all attendees standing outside to
enter the convocation hall; by the time we reached the gate from the lawns,
the protesters had already been swept into a police van and were about to
leave.

To be fair, they were far outnumbered by the police.
