Also, wouldnt it be better to bond your "unlimited" 3g data plan rather
than metered 4g ? :)
4x 3G would actually be decent speed and peace of mind not worrying about
overages is always nice

If the signal is too hot, I bet so. You may be scattering the RF all over
and reflecting back at you. Rf will bounce off a sponge if loud enough.

Normally I'd agree with you and usually look for reflection. But, this
install is only a stone's throw away from the water tank. That said, I
suppose I could be getting reflection off the tank itself.

I dont know if this is a question as much as a statement of interest. I've
had a few customer that wanted faster speeds and couldnt wait until my 5GHz
sectors were up. So, I used a NS5 and connected right off my backhaul grids
and they worked great. I dont plan to leave them on the backhauls but it
works for now. The interesting part is my installer set up a 3rd customer
today but he didnt realize my backhauls are H-Pol. He actually got higher

I really think if left alone, this is going to cause RF issues in the
future. Additionally, the Grids are going to provide a much hotter
signal than your sectors or omni's in the same place. So much so, that
the client may not reconnect to the omni or sector you plan on putting

I'm with ya, Rick. I have 2 installed the same way. Not in the rules
really, since my backhauls are pumping the power, too much for a PTMP as
that ends up turning it into but as a temporary solution, it's cool on this
side of things. :) One was for lack of a sector and the other was because,
due to trees, it was the best signal I could get until I get another AP
finished. (signal is a -84, makes me nervous!)

Re: [WISPA] Interesting BGP Redundancy Opton for FREE

2009-04-26 Thread Tom DeReggi
Scott,

Actually, I originally missed the part about "mikrotik router".
We don't use Mikrotik routers currently, as they can not accommodate us
loading our custom management software code.
But all our servers are Linux based, so can likely do anything that Mikrotik
can, (with a little bit of effort).

Butch was suggesting using PPTP. I need to double check that we have a PPTP
package loaded on our routers, and if not, load one first.
(I could always get a MT box to do the tunnel, and just allocate an Ethernet
port on my Linux router to it, but I'd need to procure a MT unit first. )
I agree, at minimum, it would be a fun experiment, with no disadvantage. We
have plenty of free bandwidth.

We should probably take this offlist, at this point.
We can always share the results with the list, after the fact.

You can set the MRRU to 65535 if you want.

The tunnel itself will be whatever the transport MTU is. You can even
do (if you desire) a PPtP over OpenVPN to get the added encryption. For
what it's worth, it is documented:

I built one tunnel from an AT&T T1 circuit in Tennessee to a site in
California that was terminated by Cox. This particular tunnel is
currently carrying 10k byte packets. Is that clear enough?

Mikrotik has a documented solution. The above tunnel description is an
example using Mikrotik. For what it's worth, this is a bridged segment.
And, there are 2 other endpoints (on the internet) that are part of this
network. I didn't miss your point, I simply said it is possible to do
and it's not difficult at all.

Hello again...

I didn't specify comcast but in the context of our discussion it doesn't
matter much :)

Tom... Lets just do a test from your network to mine. A learning
experience if nothing else - can't go wrong there.

I've never heard of CIPE but I assure you that MT has no problem whatsoever
passing traffic from anyone over a tunnel between us, I think you are hung
up on something that is a non-issue and what Butch mentioned was not about
over one's own network - he understood that it was from some end user
provider to another with multiple possible ISPs in the middle... its a
mute point who's in the middle really with whats being proposed and how it
works.

I have a router ready to go, you? Latency between us is good, less than
30ms. I 60MB on any given day/time still available not doing anything,
usually a little more.

Am I understanding correctly Are you saying.
When using PPTP and you set the MRRU to the same as your tunnels, both your
tunnel ethernet packet size can be 1512, while the ethernet packet size for
data inside the tunnel also can be 1512? Meaning that PPTP does not
increase the Ethernet packet size, in order to be implemented?

(PS, I don't recall the details of PPTP. We generally use IPSEC, OpenVPN,
VLANs, MPLS, all of which increase ethernet packetsize above 1512, unless IP
payload MTU is reduced..)

Re: [WISPA] Interesting BGP Redundancy Opton for FREE

2009-04-26 Thread Tom DeReggi
Butch,

You completely missed my point, ot the background to the thread..
Of course "you" can build a tunnel of just about any MTU size on "your"
network.
The issue at hand is what max MTU size OTHER upstream ISPs allow on their
network.

Scott was talkng about doing a tunnel accross an end user Comcast circuit.
With the open Internet, the two end point end users don't really have
control of what ISPs in between gets traversed from End Point A to B. The
ISPs in the middle could chance at any time. This is not a new problem

For example A number of years back Universities built a "private"
experimental transport network to support high MTU above 9600, so that their
GB and 10GB networks could pass full capacity. As you know, max transfer
rate is directly proportional to latency times packet size. Most common ISPs
only passed 1500MTU, therefore the Universities had to make their own net.
This has been a challenge for years for even passing VLAN tags or MPLS data,
where layer2 fiber carriers would only pass a 1512 packet. When you are the
end user, the answer is to shrink your MTU, so after the tunnel overhead it
fits into the ISP's max 1512 MTU. But when one is an tranport ISP that
transports many customer's data, it is not appropriate for the ISP to shrink
his MTU below 1500, as all the other end users would not know that the MTU
was shrunk, and would not have their routers set to a smaller MTU to fit.

Sure you can allow fragmentation, and TCP will automatically split the
packets to fit, but it has been common ISP management practice to disallow
fragmentation for various reasons that I don't want to get into in this
thread. And yes, there is MTU autolearning, but again, not supported by
everyone or all protocols.

So sure, the ISP can make a tunnel setting a lower MTU, so after tunel
overhead, it will fit in the uipstream's 1512 MTU. But then full size
packets (because packets comming from end user customers will be 1512 size)
inside the tunnel will get fragmented to fit into the tunnel. For long haul
backhauls, there can be side effects of just simply allowing fragmentation
on the routers without any further consideration.

Again, we have a good solution for this... It is called CIPE. Its a
tunneling protocol that splits the packets appropriately for optimal
efficiency. I understand how CIPE works because it is what we use. I can't
say I understand the methods that Mikrotik may use. So, what I asked is how
Mikrotik can deal with that problem, because Mikrotik does not support CIPE.

Re: [WISPA] Interesting BGP Redundancy Opton for FREE

2009-04-24 Thread Tom DeReggi
Also remember the 1500 byte MTU issue.
Over a Layer2 PTP its usually not an issue, but it is over a standard
transit connection.
(customer and Internet needs to see 1500 bytes, but an ISP's tunnel causes
packet size to exceed 1500 MTU.
Customer end devices have the option of lowering their MTU to deal with it,
but an ISP in the middle does not have that option, as the packets comming
from end users are 1500 byte already. Fragmentation is not allowed on many
network router hops.

We use Cipe tunnels to solve that. To split the full size packets before it
enters the tunnel, so tunnel stays at 1500MTU or less, required by the
transit provider..

How do you do it with Mikrotik ?

[WISPA] Interesting BGP Redundancy Opton for FREE

2009-04-24 Thread Scott Carullo

Ok... I have multiple peers, bgp, etc... Normal stuff.

I am looking for someone who has MT, has bgp peers but maybe would like to
have a little more redundancy just in case. For example our main router
with both peers is in the same facility so I still currently have some
single point of failure issues I'd like to resolve. Bottom line - a plane
crashes into my facility and I'm off the air for a while.

If you are in this same boat, I have a solution I believe, that won't cost
either of us hardly anything. We get a cable connection (or whatever cheap
business class connection) that is say 20MB down and 2MB up (for example)
at a remote site in another city where our network spans. We create a
tunnel between our routers and if either side main fiber or router goes
down traffic can be re-routed temporarily via this connection and the
down-speed would be pulling from the others main fiber feeds so it should
stil be fast enough to make a lot of the pain go away - better than being
down any way. The BGP session between sites would also allow incoming
traffic for email / web etc to operate as well - which is the only thing
this solution adds to a non-BGP type backup circuit.

Any way, this is not a replacement for having multiple bgp peers with real
connections, don't take it that way. This is a low cost way to help each
other out in worst case scenario for whoever may be in this same position.
I'm willing to explore options any way if someone else is interested. Send

This is the most important part of the article.

"Sure, almost 20 percent of those who use dial-up apparently wouldn't

I'd say that that's probably a conservative estimate.

Then add RAM, a hard drive, a case, power supply, and someone's time to
assemble the parts and install the OS, and you're pretty close to $199.
Unless you're building tens of thousands of them like Wal-Mart is, of
course. :)

In any event, I'm generally skeptical of recommending Linux systems for
novice end-users. The first time one of your customers goes to Wal-Mart,
buys "Deer Hunter 2008" (or MS Money, or basically anything else there),
takes it home, and finds out it doesn't work, they'll be cranky, and
since you suggested that computer, it's /de facto/ your fault.

If ALL they need is a Web browser and email reader, a cheap Linux box
would be great for that. Most folks want more than that, though.

I have often thought of suggesting a linux box for people that have
problems with rampant viruses and/or malware, but I've always shied away
because I really don't want to have to do the support on it. If it was

sometimes too great! If you are shooting over the top of a drop ceiling and

wrong direction. It does great shooting under houses and trailers for my

This locks me out of getting funding from RUS for towns that have already

The map is a farce.

There should be some way of dealing with people who
CLAIM to be providing service in an area where they
are not, or who are planning on using a RUS loans to

with service.

I know during the application process that public notice
was required, but that has been years ago, other services have started up in

areas that still are not being

I dont know about AT&T but UPS is seeking "Broadband Backup" at all
their locations. I've already received their official packet from

AT&T wasn't looking for providers for temporary service... they were
looking for permanent contracted links for redundancy - and they stated
that they were intentionally side-stepping the local ilecs. Their
service would be the primary and they prefer a WISP connection as the
backup.

I'll get my sales guy to try to get more details...

Seems legit tho - unless they're just mapping out our coverage areas for
their "own use" :)

We have provided these services to AT&T before. Generally, they are
either for Whitehouse or some other political events in the area. Our

RE: [WISPA] Interesting Call Today

2007-04-18 Thread Smith, Rick

I've gotten calls from both UPS and AT&T, and it seems like they might
be in bed together for some logistics ratchet-up coming soon to the
supply chain industry.

Why is AT&T ordering wireless links? They can put a T1 anywhere they
want. I don't get it. I would certainly be suspect of that also.

Bullit is servicing one of their offices. A couple others were too as I
recall the conversations on the p15 list.

My impression is that this is legit. They are accepting this as a viable
alternative to leased lines or cable/dsl. And those services all take a
long time to set up and require contracts. Most wisps will do short term
"event" type connections that the others won't.

This makes like the 5th time I've seen this kind of posting, but as of

nobody has stated they provided any services, it was always just a request
that appeared to be evaluating the viability of a conference site.
