Is anyone aware of a MUX that will let me MUX together T1s (needs to be

unMUX on the other end.  Again... it all needs to be transparent.

What is the underlying physical layer, asynchronous (Ethernet, including
a typical WISP radio) or isochronous (like a DS3)? There are different
muxes for each. In the RAD catalog, for instance, the RICi family
passes Ethernet over isochronous circuits (like native T1s and DS3s).
The IPmux family passes T1s over native Ethernet.

Now one more thing to think about. If you're carrying T1s
transparently, you may need to pass the timing. I've run into cases
where the VoIP provider didn't realize that supplying the timing was
required. Often the remote end T1 can just be clocked locally, and
there's no need to pass timing across the Ethernet. But if the customer
needs you to be a timing source, you may need to use one of these two
methods:

In one case it is straightforward -- when the physical layer is itself
isochronous (self-clocked); that's how SONET and DS3 work, for instance.
A mux for that can just pass timing natively, if you set it up right.

If you're carrying the T1s over an asynchronous native medium like
non-synchronous Ethernet (some Ethernet PMDs are synchronous and pass
along timing, especially at 10G, but most aren't), and the T1s need
timing, then you may need to supply the timing independent of the
physical layer. The usual way to do this is PWE3, Pseudowire Emulation
over Ethernet, which is what the IPmux does; it's an option in Cisco
(and many other) media gateways too.

I believe some RAD products will do this. We use some of their T1 fiber

SM SFP's come in many versions..
most common / generic
Short Range (LX)
Medium Range (LH)
Long Range. (ZX)

(then you also have the Colorized versions.. and not counting the Single
Fiber SFP's. (Tx & Rx on a single fiber, rather than a pair).

For those interested in getting more info on these... here is a good
starting document from CISCO..
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps5455/ps6577/product_data_sheet0900aecd8033f885.html

LH & ZX stuff can get expensive.

I am not picky about my SFP's... lots of time pick them up on Ebay...
(Surplus).

If you like I have SM Fiber GBIC's. $20 each
if you need SFP's (normal LX)... I have those too... $ 20 each.

If you want full Media converter last ones I bought were from CTC
Union... www.ctcu.com.tw
.
http://stores.ebay.com/Fiber-Optic-for-All-warehouse?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

These days, we are using Ethernet Switches with SFP's as media
converters... with the exception of when we need a SMF Fast Ethernet
Media Converter.

Yes, when I priced them last year I didn't find any SM for < $350.
Got a brand you like? I am going to need another soon.

Re: [WISPA] Fiber handoff to Mikrotik

2012-11-13 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
SM SFP's come in many versions..
most common / generic
Short Range (LX)
Medium Range (LH)
Long Range. (ZX)

(then you also have the Colorized versions.. and not counting the Single
Fiber SFP's. (Tx & Rx on a single fiber, rather than a pair).

For those interested in getting more info on these... here is a good
starting document from CISCO..
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps5455/ps6577/product_data_sheet0900aecd8033f885.html

LH & ZX stuff can get expensive.

It seems to me that the price is pretty much the same when sm vs mm, just
goes up depending on the distance the sfp needs to go. For my application I
needed to get an 80km sm version And it was 245 from aaxeon.com

Also depends on your commit. How was your CPU load looking with the RB493G?
If you're increasing bandwidth, And you were on the edge of needing a
faster router. Might as well do them at the same time.

Baltic Networks/RouterMaxx with SFP ports comes to mind as a nice step up.

Re: [WISPA] Fiber On Air (gigabit wireless)

2011-10-26 Thread Dorn Hetzel
Well, sure, it's possible, as long as you are able to use levels of laser
power that would be really unfriendly to anyone unlucky enough to step in
front of it. You can bounce laser signals off the reflector left on the
moon, so I don't think 35 miles would be that much of a challenge :) Now,
could a civilian deploy something with this range at a reasonable bandwidth
in a location where faces might conceivable intercept the beam? I'm
guessing not so much...

Re: [WISPA] Fiber On Air (gigabit wireless)

2011-10-26 Thread Josh Luthman
I talked with someone Friday that said he had a laser link doing 35
miles. It was military or medical, something "high up". Is this
possible?

I always imagined the links to be super difficult, but I'm interested
in any knowledge you have on them.

Where will the link be located? 80GHz is unlicensed in some parts of the
world. In the US, BridgeWave includes the 80GHz license with the radio, so
that shouldn't affect the purchasing decision.

Taking my vendor hat off, I would avoid FSO if you can. Very susceptible to
changes in the environment, low MTBF, twist/sway is a major concern.

If you got any questions - feel free to ask off or onlist.

Re: [WISPA] Fiber On Air (gigabit wireless)

2011-10-26 Thread Daniel White
The limit is based on O2 absorption. It is hard limit, not hardware or
software based but atmospheric attenuation based.

2.5km is usually a slam dunk for 80GHz.

It's not clear if that limit is hard (timing-based) or soft (loss-based).
If you're in a relatively dry area, and it's a soft limit, you might get a
bit of extra range. But I suspect that only would apply in FE mode, not GE
mode, which needs more power.

I'd also check Dragonwave, whose brochures are behind a registration/mail
wall. But reliable GE for that distance on microwave is a stretch.

The fSONA product is free space optical, not microwave. It might do the job
but FSO requires a genuine, true, real line-of-sight path.

Re: [WISPA] Fiber termination

2011-09-11 Thread Philip Dorr
We use an Amp Lightcrimp Plus kit. It can also do LC, SC, and ST.

It cost ~400 used, it is simple, and quick (if done correctly).

Cheap, simple, does good job = pick 2

I recommend the Corning Pretium Unicam kit there are a few variations
but it will allow you to install LC / SC / ST end no problem on both single
and multimode cable. We have one use it all the time.

What is everyone using for a fiber media converter? Have been testing
this unit in the network room:

One thing I have seen is the auto negotiation on the copper 1000BASE-T
connection can occasionally go into endless cycles with some gear.
You can generate the error by rapid unplugging the ethernet and then
plugging it back in. Causes both ends of the link to drop copper
ethernet link which I guess it should. Seems if you unplug for 30
seconds or so before restoring it things seem to go better. Never
seems to act up on a switch so I wander if its the other gear at
fault.

Is this just kind of a typical thing on units like this or are there
better media converters?

Hate to say it, but if it says Trendnet, it has no place in a service provider
network.

The best way to solve this is with a managed switch that takes SFP's or the
older GBIC's. You can mix and match optics at that point.

Re: [WISPA] Fiber up towers?

2010-07-15 Thread Philip Dorr
I do not know exactly what guage/brand/type of wire, but it has "3125
07:08 ROHS" printed on it and then a number of feet. It is ran up the
side of the tower and cable tied about every five feet. On the bottom
end of the cable we have a PolyPhaser PLDO-120US20A to protect the
equipment in the building from lightning strikes.

The Armored fiber says "Chromatic technologies, Inc. Optical Fiber
Cable 700 series ==62.5/125== 6F PN 200032.  03/01" and then the
number of meters on it. and is cable tied with the AC.

Corning riser rated armored is rated for 300 feet of unsupport vertical routing.

It can be supported with a cable grip for 3/8" cable or LMR400.

It can be attache to the tower with LMR400 snap ins or "butterfly" clamps or
heavy duty ty-wraps.

This is the cable that looks like BX power cable

Re: [WISPA] Fiber up towers?

2010-07-15 Thread Philip Dorr
1. I do not think we are doing strain relief on the normal fiber, but
on the armored we attached it to the tower with brackets every 4 feet
or so.
2. We have done both. The non armored is easier to get to the
fibers, but the armored can be attached directly to the tower.
3. The armored is attached directly to the tower, but the normal is
in rigid conduit, until ~2 feet from the box at the top and then it is
~4 feet of flexible conduit
4. Normal fiber to Ethernet transceiver, the same we use at the
bottom. We run AC up the tower to power our radios, fiber module(s),
and router.

The ones I used years ago were big pigs and the OTDRs we in huge rolling
cases. The last fusion splicer I saw was a little DC model that was
about the size of sandwich. It is a measure of my advancing years I
suppose.

Re: [WISPA] Fiber Terminations

2010-03-02 Thread Patrick Leary
Both are feasible, though technically terminating would result in less
loss since a splice adds another point of attenuation, if small. It also
depends on the type of splice. Fusion splicing provides the best splice
result though a mechanical splice might be faster and avoids the cost of
renting a splicer. Terminations (which also do not require rental
equipment) are much simpler than when I was a fiber tech and should not
cost you much.

Isn't the trend these days to splice already terminated tails rather
than installing connectors? I hear splicing is much faster and touts a
less chance of error. At least that's what I learned last time we
looked into doing our own fiber terminations...

2009-05-09 Thread Blair Davis

There is no reason one couldn't do a custom POE that was AC.

A couple thoughts...

To maintain a max input of 48VDC, (to be under the low voltage codes),
and to deliver 50W topside, is going to require a 14-16AWG wire pair
and a 48V 60W supply at the bottom.

I suspect that you will need to get some DC-DC converters in various
sizes to run the equipment up there...

2009-05-08 Thread Scott Reed
Belden makes this, but I don't have a number for it.

I would be really cautious if they are running 1500' single run for
POE. Need to do the voltage loss calculation to be sure to use the
correct power supply.

Re: [WISPA] Fiber/Coax Deployment, Common Carrier?

2009-04-24 Thread Tom DeReggi
Good question

Might be a good reason to seperate the Cable versus Wireless portions of
activities into two seperate company entities.

Even on a Grant app, there could be benefits to calling it a joint
application, and seperating the cable versus wireless entities.

Re: [WISPA] fiber termination

2009-04-23 Thread Tom DeReggi
We have found $60 per strand per side termination to be market rate.

However, we use Corning's no polish system, and it takes 15 minutes per
strand end, if you aren't real good at it, and the connector is $15.
The cost to termianting fiber, is when you mess up.SCrew up a connector,
and you just threw away $15. Fail a quality test (packet loss on fiber) and
you just added hours to the job, tracking down which bad termination end
needs replaced.

We just terminated some fiber we put in. Used hot melt and hand polished
the the fiber.
It took no more than an hour to do 6 strands on each end. Maube 1 1/2 hour.
Not sure which connectors you are using, but those can be expensive as
well. I think we must have paid about 15.00 per connctor.

Tell them we told you to call. They offer some wonderful
used units.

Metal ones, with heat pump, used, from the old MCI
system are probably available from Jay at mid america towers
in northern IL.http://www.midamericatowers.com/ Jay is

Good question. It's not just CapEX that has to be considered but OpEx as
well.

Which can be quite expensive even in small towns as we have seen from

Indeed it can. Plus once the fiber is deployed there is a whole host of
OpEx costs that vary greatly
based on what is being delivered.

Is it costing you that considering all costs (last mile, transport, NOC)?
Or just your last mile cost?

I know an MTU building can be connected /spliced into street fiber for as
little as $700 in parts/labor, including only the time start to finish
installing it. (not all the beurocracy and planning time)

There are numerous respected people in this industry that have pitched an
average Fiber deployment to cost around $20/mon per sub over 20 years.
That could mean alot of different things.

I'd be interested in hearing more about what you deliver for $1000/ sub?

Interesting arcticle.

What so many forget is that Fiber does not just cost $4000 per sub to
Verizon, it costs $17 /month per subscriber. There is a big difference. Long
term beneift is undisputed.
The problem a small provider has to ask is... How do they fund it.

Its also important to note though that the $4000/sub accounts for all costs
for full Fiber end to end.

It can cost much less for a partial hybrid fiber deployment that is cherry
picked.

 From the article:
When it was announced, Verizon’s $23 billion planned investment in the

and decided to build the fiber system at an estimated cost of about
$4,000 for every customer.

I'm not sure what manufacturer is the one to build out on. Is it Cisco?

We use Telco Systems's Tmarc Ethernet demarc device.

Matt,

We have not considered that, but it comes down to cost as well. We
charge a $500 setup fee to get the fiber installed at the customer
prem. It costs us about $1,000 to actually get the fiber installed
including the Cisco switch with GBIC's. I understand the idea of CWDM
and ADMs, but at the same time I see a downside. If one of the GBIC
modules fails at the customer prem, they are down. With our current
configuration, they would still be up and running. It would also add
one more point of failure at each customer.

Doing the ADM approach would cost about the same. You are correct that
without the Cisco you can't provide protection. However, you do get
greater protection for your overall network with the ADM approach. This
is because 2 failed Ciscos take out all nodes between the two failed
Ciscos. In the case of the ADMs, only the active Ethernet part of the
device can fail, which means the individual node goes down, but not the
ring.

We adopted the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle when we started
doing the fiber. We run STP on the main switch at our NOC, so really
traffic only goes out one GBIC at our NOC unless there is a problem.
At that point, we get email notification and using our SNMP system, we
can tell exactly where the problem is and get it fixed quickly. Right
now we are only moving about 50Mbps of traffic, so even only having
1Gbps of capacity should work for many, many years to come.

That is a smart way to go. Trying to get more sophisticated with fiber
can get expensive fast. We are selling a good number of GigE circuits on
our fiber ring, so we have capacity issues that precluded us from using
the approach you are taking.

We use a hybrid CWDM/DWDM approach. This means that initially we use
CWDM for nodes until we have 4 channels in use. We make sure only to use
the bottom and top 2 channels of CWDM. This then allows us to run DWDM
later in the space of the middle 4 channels of CWDM. This is all done by
popping in different cards with either passive CWDM filters or active
DWDM electronics.

Re: [WISPA] Fiber

2007-12-16 Thread John J. Thomas
If the drop is 550', you can use Multi mode and the termination is considerably
cheaper.

As for individual strands, there is probably a balance where it makes sense to
not necessarily drop 128 strands, but do something more than 6 strands.
