That requires caching the real MSI and any external cabs. The
.msi file that MSI caches is stripped of all embedded cabs.

Bob,

Is that something I would have to do manually, or is there an MSI

[WiX-users] How to invoke exe file

2007-11-08 Thread diwakar09

Hi,

I am very new to wix, i am able to extract files from the .msi file to a
specified location like c:\~--\temp.
I have a text file and a exe file that will edit this text file as per the
user input.
Both the files are there in temp folder, after the installation,

The problem that i am facing is that all files are going to this location,
but when i try to invoke this exe or txt file with in the same installation,
it does not work.

Actually i am doing two tasks in one installation.

1. copying all the files to temp ( file.exe , textfile.txt ).
2. invoke one file (file.exe) from temp and trying to manupulate the
other(textfile.txt)

but only first task is performed, and i won't get the edited text file.

could you please help me out
or could you explain how to acheive this task,

A sample code is needed, that will help me a lot
i am using custom action to execute exe.
and publish the DoAction to call this custom action

I know that i am doing some thing wrong but unable to figure it out

so please help me

If this not the place to put query, then please forward me the link so that
i can do the same

Thanx in advance

[WiX-users] ClickThrough newbie question: How to use it ?

2007-11-08 Thread Crusty Applesniffer
Hello,

I'm wondering how to use the ClickThrough feature.
When I start the CT user interface, it asks me for a path to directory
that contains your built isolated application
My application is made of 3 services and 2 user interfaces (all is
distributed through a .msi file built with Wix)
What path should I put in the text field ? the setup path or one of my
.exe paths ?

Moreover I do not understand how my application (services and user
interfaces) could check there is a new version available.

I've already read the ClickThrough Project vision
(http://wix.sourceforge.net/ctvision.html) and any other information is
welcome.

Thanks.

Crusty Applesniffer.

[WiX-users] Restoring a database from an mdf/ldf

2007-11-08 Thread Sajo Jacob
I have a scenario where I have to restore a database from an mdf/ldf on to
the target machine during the installation which I was planning on
accomplishing by :

1) Copying the mdf/ldf to a *MySoftware/Data* folder

2) Calling a sql script *AttachDB.sql* (using the SqlScript
element) which
does a *EXEC sp_attach_db* and attachs the mdf to a newly created database

but the roadblock I see is that I want to attach the mdf from the *
MySoftware/Data* (from step 1) which is configurable by the user to be
installed on any drive.

Neither attaching the mdf from the CD like shown below or using a hardcoded
*MySoftware/Data* location does not help in this case;

*AttachDB.sql*

EXEC sp_attach_db @dbname = 'MyCDatabase',

 @filename1 = 'E:\CD_DriveFolder\WiXTest.mdf',

  @filename2 = 'E:\CD_DriveFolder\WiXTest_log.ldf'

Can something like this be done from WiX without using a VBScript?

Re: [WiX-users] wixpdb

2007-11-08 Thread Peter Marcu
It compares the files on disk and does a bitwise comparison of the files. If
they are truly identical, it is smart enough to know. The CompareFiles method
is also extensible if you implement a binder extension which would allow you to
incorporate any additional smarts that you can infer based on your build
environment or source structure.

Does the wixpdb method compare the binaries from the two .msi files? Or, does
it compare the files as they are on the disk? (My preference is for using .msi
files due to project archiving and other such things).

If it compares the files as they are on the disk, is it wise enough to know when
one .msi has a c:\1.0\whatever.exe, and another .msi has c:\1.1\whatever.exe,
and the whatever.exe files are exactly identical?

I'm trying to package up a C# application I've made. The final installer will
need to set some registry keys, but for now I'm trying to just get simple file
copying to work. I've created a CAB file containing the EXE and a few
supporting files by using cabarc.exe:

cabarc N product.cab Release\*.* Release\images\*.* Release\icons\*.*

This creates product.cab, which definitely contains the files.

I then create a WIX project in VS2005 and modify the template Product.wxs to
include this:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?
Wix xmlns=http://schemas.microsoft.com/wix/2006/wi;
Product Id=43f2ead8-70d1-41b6-9db5-a5d4ad96be83 Name=ID14
Language=1033 Version=1.4.0.0 Manufacturer=AlanTest
Package InstallerVersion=200 Compressed=yes /

Media Id=1 Cabinet=product.cab EmbedCab=yes /

  Directory Id=TARGETDIR Name=SourceDir
Directory Id=ProgramFilesFolder Name=ID14

Component Id=ID14exe Guid=43f2ead8-70d1-41b6-9db5-a5d4ad96be83
  File Id= ID14file Name=id14.exe LongName=id14.exe Source=
id14.exe Vital=yes KeyPath=yes DiskId=1/
/Component
/Directory

  /Directory

Feature Id=ProductFeature Title=PUT-FEATURE-TITLE-HERE Level=1
ComponentRef Id=ID14exe /
/Feature
/Product
/Wix

I copy my CAB file to the project folder (same folder as Product.wxs), compile,
and get a The system cannot find the file 'id14.exe' error.

Am I missing some simple step? I looked through the tutorial and docs but they
mostly skipped over how to stage the CAB file properly.

Subject: RE: IIS issues with MSI install

I certainly can!

Blair,

The version I am using is: Votive 2005 - Windows Installer XML (WiX) Toolset,
Version 3.0.2925.0

The issue with the AppPool is similar to the issue I am having with the
websites. It would insert the keys and folders in the wrong spot in the
metabase. It looks as if IIS Websites seem to be a little more forgiving then
the AppPools.

Here is a screen shot of the metabase issue that I'm seeing currently. Notice
the two sections in the red box, it looks as if the W3SVC\5 section is being
put all over the place when it should only reside under the LM section of the
metabase.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Pierson

I personally haven't done anything involving building MSIs for IIS, and I have
done next to nothing with IIS in general. This appears (on the surface) to be a
bug in the IIS custom actions.

The alias for WiX is
wix-users@lists.sourceforge.netmailto:wix-users@lists.sourceforge.net, which
is external and public. The archives for this alias are at
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum_name=wix-users. I noticed
that Pierson sent this same message to that alias today (see attached).

Which version/build of the WiX toolset? (it would be helpful to add to that
email thread the build of WiX used)

Also, what issues have you had with WebAppPool?

Subject: [WiX-users] IIS issues during install/uninstall

Hello all-

I'm getting occasional (and increasingly frustrating) issues with IIS Web
Site/applications and IIS Application Pools in IIS when using a WiX 3.0 Created
MSI package where the sites/app pools are getting installed on the wrong level
of the metabase then not uninstalling properly, causing reinstalls/upgrades to
fail. (installing to a Windows 2003 Server x64bit running IIS 6.0)

Example (using adsutil ENUM /p W3SVC/3):

IIS Metabase (Correct)-

W3SVC/3/Root
W3SVC/3/Filters

IIS Metabase (Incorrect)-

W3SVC/3/Root
W3SVC/3/Filters
W3SVC/3/W3SVC

When I look under the last path ( adsutil ENUM /p W3SVC/3/W3SVC) it is showing

W3SVC/3/w3svc/3

Because of this, it is not fully uninstalling the site when the MSI is getting
uninstalled.
I had the same issue with App Pools in IIS to the point where I took that part
out of the WiX MSI and separated it into a C# application. I don't want to do
that with the website because if I do, at that point, the MSI will just be a
glorified xCopy.

Any help will be appreciated. Code snippet (with names slightly changed) is
provided below.

Thanks
Pierson

Re: [WiX-users] ICE60 with HPGLIM32.FLT

2007-11-08 Thread Blair Murri
According to my interpretation of
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/library/aa369003.aspx the file is not a font file,
and yet the MsiGetFileVersion() api was able to retrieve a version but not a
language value for that file (indicating that a language value was not found in
a version resource that was found). Apparently that ICE thinks that only font
files can have a version but not a language in the version resource.

You can either ask whoever created that file (I assume Office) to fix it, or
you can either suppress that warning (or simply ignore it). Since it is a
warning and not an error, it shouldn't prevent you from getting/using your MSI
(unless you have specified the -wx flag to light).

I suppose you could add a DefaultLanguage attribute, but I suspect that would
break servicing/patching/etc.

I'm getting an error that looks like this (new for WiX3, latest weekly build)

C:\MFragment.xml(8) : warning LGHT1076 : ICE60: The file MCmdFile1000 is not a
Font, and its version is not a companion file reference. It should have a
language specified in the Language column.

Ewhat???

The line in question looks like this:

File Id=MCmdFile1000 Name=HPGLIM32.FLT Source=C:\HPGLIM32.FLT /

The file can be found here:

[WiX-users] Latest requirements for building WiX 3?

2007-11-08 Thread Scott, James (TSG RD - Fort Collins)
Is the latest list of requirements for building WiX available somewhere?

The web pages and the CHM files all still reference SDK 3790.1830, while the
NAnt builds clearly expect the Vista SDK. Other not-so-obvious changes
probably appear later.

Thanks!

It's not dramatically changed (SDK newer, no VSIP SDK required) but
please enter a bug so we get the right people to look at the (painfully
long) list.

The former or both: MSI doesn't cache full MSIs, so that you have to do
manually. If you run the install from the full copy and don't delete it,
MSI will use it during source resolution. Otherwise, you can use the MSI
APIs to add the cached copy to the source list (e.g.,
MsiSourceListAddSource).

Re: [WiX-users] How to Start a Service?

2007-11-08 Thread Richard.Foster
One of the other Richard's wrote:

How do you know that your service starts properly at all?

Since you're installing it, I assume that you've written and debugged
it already, but you didn't say.

A very common problem (which appears frequently on the mailing list)
related to installation of services is that the service has a dependency
on something (e.g. on debug versions of runtime files, or even just
standard runtime files) that may not be present on the end user's
machine.

Another very common problem is inappropriate sequencing of the service
start operation. An example would be attempting to start a service
before the files have been installed. (Don't laugh... that really has
happened!)

One thing I find helpful in such situations is at the point when the
installation fails, I switch immediately (without acknowledging the
error) to the manage my computer services area and attempt to start
the service manually. Typically it will also fail there, and you can
then look for missing dependencies etc.

Hope this helps.

Richard

In article [EMAIL PROTECTED],
ar [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

OK, then it comes down to whether or not you are referencing
everything in the ServiceInstall properly. I've used MSIs to install
and manipulate services and if everything matches properly, its a
no-brainer, but if anything in the ServiceInstall or ServiceControl
tables are specified wrong, then it will fail and you get that generic
error message.

In particular, your display name is *not* used to control the service,
but rather its service name is used.

The ServiceInstall table (and the corresponding element in WiX) is
essentially a table form of all the arguments to the Win32 API
::CreateService and the ServiceControl table (and corresponding
element in WiX) is essentially a table form of the sequence
::OpenService, ::ControlService, and ::CloseServiceHandle.

If your service installs properly outside of your MSI and your MSI
fails, then your data is just plain wrong. Check all the data against
what your service expects/needs.

Re: [WiX-users] Transparent bitmaps in UI

Another hackneyed solution would be to edit the images and color the
background the same as the background color of the installer dialog. I
did this for one of our bitmaps and it gives the affect you want without
needing transparency support.

The only three formats MSI supports are BMP, JPEG, and ICO. Icons

Newer variants of BMP support transparency, but I don't know if MSI
will do anything useful with a transparent BMP.
