The attached patch fixes the issues described in 4a-b. It was just a

non-existing client namespace in /ws, except if you call wmiir
from a tty in /tmp/ directly accessing the wmii socket (and in
such a case the /ws/sel does not provide any clients inside).

stack overflow, maybe the core file was not generated by wmiiwm,
maybe, maybe, ...
Setting the ulimit from .xinitrc is not a good idea. Better
would be to set the ulimit from the shell you startx from.
