I have committed the patch to YARN-5355 and YARN-5355-branch-2. I had to cherry
pick YARN-4765 to YARN-5355-branch-2 before cherry picking this one because
YARN-4765, on which this patch is based, was missing on YARN-5355-branch-2.

Thanks [~gtCarrera9] for your contribution, and [~varun_saxena] for your review!

[jira] [Commented] (YARN-5739) Provide timeline reader API to list available timeline entity types for one application

Varun Saxena commented on YARN-5739:

Sorry could not look at it earlier as I was away. Patch LGTM too except a few
small nits.

# In javadoc for TimelineReader#getEntityTypes, there are a few typos. Instead
of below, it should be "A set which contains available timeline entity types,
represented as strings if found, empty otherwise.". Also the line in front of
throws should say "while getting entity types" instead of "while getting
entity".
{code}
190* @return A set contains available timeine entity types, represented
as
191* Strings if found, null otherwise.
192* @throws IOException if any problem occurs while getting entity.
{code}
# The javadoc above EntityTypeReader#getNextRowKey should have application id
instead of application information
{code}
137* @param currRowKeyPrefix The current prefix that contains user,
cluster,
138* flow, run, and application information.
{code}
# TimelineReaderManager lines 197 and 198 can be combined into one line.

The latest patch LGTM. Thanks [~gtCarrera9] for the update!

I'll wait until [~varun_saxena] takes a look at it, and then commit it if there
are no objections.

[jira] [Commented] (YARN-5739) Provide timeline reader API to list available timeline entity types for one application

Sangjin Lee commented on YARN-5739:

I think the {{if (singleEntityRead())}} check in ApplicationEntityReader is
meaningful. In case of a multi-entity read for the applications, the app id
would be empty in the context. Thus, that check needs to be done for
applications if I'm not mistaken. The GenericEntityReader should NOT check that
on the other hand.

So in that sense, the refactoring would be a little more involved.

Also, the two augmentParams in GenericEntityReader and in
ApplicationEntityReader seems quite similar. The only difference is we need to
distinguish if a read is single entity read when we actually augment the
params. Can we merge the two logic together? I can expose the base
implementation on augmentParams but was wondering if we can further simplify
the logic here to just let ApplicationEntityReader#augmentParams call super?

bq. I hate to nitpick on the name, but AbstractTimelineStorageReader sounds a
little awkward to me. Can we stick to the entity reader names? How about
AbstractTimelineEntityReader or BaseTimelineEntityReader? Thoughts?
Avoiding the term "Entity" is a deliberate choice here. Now EntityTypeReader
will not return any entity types so I'm avoiding using the term Entity in the
base class.

Thanks for the update [~gtCarrera9]. I have some feedback specific to the
refactoring.

(AbstractTimelineStorageReader.java)
- I hate to nitpick on the name, but {{AbstractTimelineStorageReader}} sounds a
little awkward to me. Can we stick to the entity reader names? How about
{{AbstractTimelineEntityReader}} or {{BaseTimelineEntityReader}}? Thoughts?
- l.36: It is bit strange that subclasses such as {{TimelineEntityReader}} are
public, and yet the base class is not. If the extended classes are public, then
the base class (i.e. type) should also be public.
- l.38: nit: let's make {{context}} {{final}}

(ApplicationEntityReader.java)
- I think the {{augmentParams()}} can be improved upon. Is it possible to rely
on the base implementations instead of replicating very similar code to
{{AbstractTimelineStorageReader.augmentParams()}}?

[jira] [Commented] (YARN-5739) Provide timeline reader API to list available timeline entity types for one application

Varun Saxena commented on YARN-5739:

I was wondering if we can refactor this code. As I said when I first reviewed
this JIRA, EntityTypeReader being a subclass of GenericEntityReader does not
seem correct. Infact is it even fit to be a subclass of TimelineEntityReader ?
We are not attempting to return timeline entities here however it can be said
in backend we store a timeline entity only.
Basically because we are deriving EntityTypeReader from TimelineEntityReader we
have to override readEntities and create the response as a set of
TimelineEntity objects unnecessarily even though what we just need is a list of
entity types. I just find this part a little weird.

Looking at the code, the main thing which we need from GenericEntityReader is
the part about looking up flow context. Rest of the required code is very
small. Should we pull out the code related to AppToFlowTable querying (i.e.
looking up flow context) and move it to a separate class ?
We can then have EntityTypeReader as a standalone class with both it and
GenericEntityReader referring to another class to look up flow context.

I do not think when it comes to querying entity types, even the filters or
timeline data to retrieve stored in TimelineEntityReader will be useful.
The best I can think of supporting as a filter for this query is that we may
want to return entity types starting with a certain prefix.

Thoughts ?

Varun Saxena commented on YARN-5739:

I think this patch can be committed before YARN-5585 as its available.

Few nits though.
# In javadoc for TimelineReader#getEntityTypes. Instead of below, it should be
"A set which contains available timeline entity types, represented as strings
if found, empty otherwise.". Also the line in front of throws should say "while
getting entity types" instead of "while getting entity".
{code}
190* @return A set contains available timeine entity types, represented
as
191* Strings if found, null otherwise.
192* @throws IOException if any problem occurs while getting entity.
{code}
# The javadoc above EntityTypeReader#getNextRowKey should have application id
instead of application information
{code}
137* @param currRowKeyPrefix The current prefix that contains user,
cluster,
138* flow, run, and application information.
{code}
# TimelineReaderManager lines 197 and 198 can be combined into one line.

I am +1 on the latest patch once this is fixed and will commit it by tomorrow
end of day.
[~sjlee0], you can probably go through the patch as well.

Do let me know if you want me to hold off the commit due to Thanksgiving.

Yeah I was referring to node label REST endpoints only when I said that we do
use hyphens in REST endpoints in YARN. I am fine with a hyphen and this was my
suggestion too but there was some comments above suggesting it without hyphens.
So just wanted to bring it to notice.

Thanks [~gtCarrera9] for the patch. Few comments.

# In TimelineReaderWebServices, do we need this code block ? Looking at code,
list of entity types can be empty, but it cannot be null.
{code}
if (results == null) {
  LOG.info("Processed URL " + url + " but app not found" + " (Took " +
  (endTime - startTime) + " ms.)");
  throw new NotFoundException("App " + appId + " not found");
}
{code}
# In EntityTypeReader#getNextRowKey, below javadoc should say application id
instead of application information. Also saying "Should not be changed during
iteration" doesn't seem at right place in method javadoc. Probably add a
comment in caller ?
{code}
   * @param currRowKeyPrefix The current prefix that contains user, cluster,
   * flow, run, and application information. Should not
   * be changed during the iteration.
{code}
# In TimelineStorageUtils#calculateTheClosestNextRowKeyForPrefix javadoc, there
is a typo. {{represneted}} should be {{represented}}
# For the newly added javadoc in TimelineReaderManager, should we say {{Gets a
list of available timeline entity types for an application}} ?

Moreover, REST endpoint suggestion was both entity-types and entitytypes. I am
fine with both as we do use hyphen in other REST endpoints in YARN. Let us go
with majority opinion. [~sjlee0], your view on this ?
We are first getting entities and then extracting types from it. But I guess
there will be a lot of code duplication if we do not do this. Right ?

For some reason, the CI build didn't kick in. I started one just now.

One minor nit: the {{HashSet}} import in {{HBaseTimelineReaderImpl}} is unused.

Varun Saxena commented on YARN-5739:

Well, found a link of HBase book which recommends using both KeyOnlyFilter and
FirstKeyOnlyFilter. Not sure why. But anyways let's use both, as the book says.
Probably internal implementation of HBase warrants use of both for optimal
performance. Quoting from the book:

{code}
101.7. Optimal Loading of Row Keys
When performing a table scan where only the row keys are needed (no families,
qualifiers, values or timestamps), add a FilterList with a MUST_PASS_ALL
operator to the scanner using setFilter. The filter list should include both a
FirstKeyOnlyFilter and a KeyOnlyFilter. Using this filter combination will
result in a worst case scenario of a RegionServer reading a single value from
disk and minimal network traffic to the client for a single row.
{code}

[~vrushalic], FirstKeyOnlyFilter will return the first KV from each row and
KeyOnlyFilter only the key going by the description for each filter. So
shouldn't KeyOnlyFilter be enough ?

bq. This filter is used to limit the number of results to a specific page size.
So it will terminate the scanning once the number of filter-passed rows is >
the given page size on that particular Region Server.
Which should be fine I guess. We apply limit (coming as a query param on reader
side) using this filter on the reader side elsewhere as well. Because we only
need one row. Even if we get one row per Region Server it will be a superset
and once result set is created it will be sorted to ensure we get keys in order
and we will fetch only the first one.
However setCaching should be fine in our use case. But not sure why we are not
using it to apply limit and using PageFilter instead. Do you know pros and cons
of one over other ?

Thanks [~gtCarrera9] for the patch.

[~varun_saxena] I think we do need both FirstKeyOnlyFilter as well as
KeyOnlyFilter both for this case.

I think we should not be setting PageFilter to 1. This filter is used to limit
the number of results to a specific page size. So it will terminate the
scanning once the number of filter-passed rows is > the given page size on that
particular Region Server.

At line 100 in HBaseTimelineReaderImpl, do we need that warning? Or should be
just a debug/info message? Is it an error if we see the same entity type again?

Couple of comments.
# I dont think we need FirstKeyOnlyFilter now.
# Use only one of setCaching and PageFilter ? Not sure which one is better

bq. WRT caching, I am wondering, if there might be a query coming next for the
details of these entity types?
Caching is set per Scan. Right ? Anyways alternatively PageFilter can be used
to retrieve only one record from backend.

[jira] [Commented] (YARN-5739) Provide timeline reader API to list available timeline entity types for one application

2016-11-08 Thread Sangjin Lee (JIRA)

Sangjin Lee commented on YARN-5739:

I'd like to add to Varun's and Vrushali's comments.

{{EntityTypeReader}} extends {{GenericEntityReader}}, but its sole purpose is
to list the entity types. I understand the rationale for
{{GenericEntityReader}} (to inherit a number of utility features), but it feels
a little awkward. At least, can we override the unnecessary public methods
(e.g. {{getEntity()}} and {{getEntities()}}) to throw an
{{UnsupportedOperationException}}?

I also agree that we probably want to use something like {{entitytypes}} for
the REST endpoint.

For a nit on a few javadoc comments, the beginning verb needs to be in the
third-person. For example, {{TimelineReaderManager.java}} l.183, it should be
"Gets", not "Get".

Thanks [~vrushalic]! I'll add a KeyOnlyFilter in the filter list. Got confused
by the name First"KeyOnly"Filter. It actually returns a kv pair...

Thanks [~gtCarrera9] for the patch. I wish to add to [~varun_saxena]'s review
suggestions.

- agree with suggestion to rename the rest endpoint, but I think we should not
use "-" in the rest endpoint string. So perhaps something like {quote}
/apps/{appid}/entitytypes {quote}
- Yes we need not set max versions at L159 in EntityTypeReader
- WRT caching, I am wondering, if there might be a query coming next for the
details of these entity types?

For the scan/filter, I have a different suggestion:

Looks like we want to return only entity types. Entity types are part of row
keys, we don't need the column qualifiers and values in that case. So we can
consider using the KeyOnlyFilter filter. This is a filter that will only
return the key component of each KV (the value will be rewritten as empty).
This filter can be used to grab all of the keys without having to also grab the
values. When performing a table scan where only the row keys are needed (no
families, qualifiers, values or timestamps), to use this, add a FilterList with
a MUST_PASS_ALL operator to the scanner using setFilter. The filter list should
include both a FirstKeyOnlyFilter and a KeyOnlyFilter.

Varun Saxena commented on YARN-5739:

Thanks [~gtCarrera9] for the patch.
Few comments.

# REST endpoint {{/apps/\{appid\}/entities}} sounds more like fetching all
entities across entity types. Should it be {{/apps/\{appid\}/entity-types}}
# Instead of using EntityTypeReader#getNextRowKey, we can use the method Rohith
has copied over from HBase code to GenericEntityReader in YARN-5585. I had
asked him to move it to TimelineStorageUtils. Once YARN-5585 goes in, you can
use that.
# In the Scan object, should we use Scan#setCaching(1) as we do not need more
than one row for every entity type. We can also use PageFilter of size 1.
# In EntityTypeReader#getResult, setting Scan#setMaxVersions is not required.
Default value of 1 should do.
# In EntityTypeReader#readResults, is setting the PrefixFilter necessary ?
Shouldn't we be using Scan#setRowPrefixFilter and pass the start row in that.
# Depends on perspective but EntityTypeReader returning a set of entities looks
somewhat weird. Do we need to make it a subclass of GenericEntityReader just
for reusing parts of augmentParams ?
# Name the relevant methods in Webservices, Reader manager and reader
implementation consistent i.e. either getEntityTypes or listEntityTypes ?

So if we need only some entity types, then it's even easier I think. The row
key already contains the entity type after the app id. The entity table row key
is
{code} userId! clusterId ! flowName ! flowRunId ! appId ! entity type ! entity
id {code}

So, if we know which entity types we are looking for, we can just add these to
the scan's while match filter for row key prefix and that should do this
"jumping" for us.

Thanks [~vrushalic]! Yes. One concern we had was the scan may need to go
through every record in an app, which is potentially a big scan. However, the
number of different entity types may be limited. So we can construct a few
scans that "jump" in different entity types. I don't think we need to provide a
separate filter since this may introduce some overhead in deployments.

Actually, this is not that hard to do. It requires making two queries:
- first to get the flow from AppToFlow table (given the cluster and appid, look
up the flowrun row key in the AppToFlow table).
- second, query the entities tables with row key
{code}
userId! clusterId ! flowName ! flowRunId ! appId
{code}

All the entities that belong to this appId are part of the scan for this row
key prefix.

We may not want to introduce another table for storing entity types for each
application since this bothers the write path a lot. Considering this is a
relatively rare use case in a cluster, we would rather put most of the burden
on the reader side. I got some offline discussion with Enis from HBase
community, and it seems like we can provide a custom filter on the storage
layer to "jump" on a scan. In this way, we can quickly jump over all entities
within one application, just grabbing out different entity types.

In this JIRA we also need to add endpoints serving this data.

Thanks Li Lu for raising a JIRA. This is one of the many folks major concern(I
missed too in meetings) while I was briefing about REST end points available in
ATSv2. They are expecting somewhat like REST end point like
*/apps/appid/entities*.

One option would be maintaining separate mapping table
application->list-of-all-entites. If we scan entity table then it is required
to filter it out by reader since it scans all the application/ row-keys. May be
need to discuss more on this supporting this API and its solutions.
