I'm not sure that it's Yojimbo that is at fault, there have been
some problems with .Mac syncing in general (personally I have a
number of sync conflicts in some of the apps, I don't which ones, I
sync but when I try to get it resolved there is nothing to be
resolved ... ).

Since I upgraded both of my computers to Leopard, everytime I sync ALL
my keychain items will be synced. Back and forth, back and forth... It
works, but I have to confirm the 25% dialog all the time. .Mac
certainly has issues.

Yojimbo items synced fine all the time.

When the cursor is inside a notes text field you can toggle the
formatting palette by pressing command-r.

The according menu entry is Format - Ruler - Show Ruler. I am not

No matter what you use (collections, tags, labels): everything ends up
in your one and only library. All that Yojimbo offers is different
views, not separation of data.

You can use collections to logically separate items. But collections
are not very useful if you use the quick input panel a lot. As you
said, you can use tags. Neither way provides real separation of data.

This is a feature: Once you open the Quick Input Panel it will fill in
what's currently in the clipboard. If you don't submit (dismiss the
panel without clicking create) it won't discard what was previously
filled in once you go back to the panel. But you might have copied
something else to the clipboard in the meantime. That's the message.

So, if this really happens _every_ time as you said, it's a bug
indeed. But I doubt it happens _every_ time.

[rsync]

Here's an example. I'm no expert but this works for me. Other more

rsync is a nice program and I use it several times each day. However,
it only knows how to synchronize _files_. Yes, it does incremental
transfers, but this does not help with the way Yojimbo stores its
entries (single file).

If, for instance, you add an entry on both ends rsync won't be able to
synchronize the Yojimbo DB because it simply does not know how to
merge it. Consequently one of the entries will be irreversibly lost
afterwards.

Usually things do not change much when an application stores its items
in distinct files because you'd still need to maintain the index.
Well, why not ditch the index as well? I asked this question once to
myself and soon found out that I can not answer it. It would more or
less mean to go back and organize things in files within the file
system. Without Yojimbo. Why not? Dunno.

Nowadays we have things like spotlight, smart folders, quicklook. I am
looking forward to the next Yojimbo version to find out how it will
fit into this and if it still feels better to keep things organized
within Yojimbo.

If you have text selected, Mail will put rich text in the drag, and

If you drag just the attachment (by clicking on the attachment

Thanks for clarifying this. Problem was obviously sitting in front of

That's not really perfect for me - the great advantage for me in
Yojimbo in comparison to stuff like Devonthink is that it syncs the
stuff in your library.

Add to Yojimbo creates a bookmark - not very useful for local stuff.

Good point, personally I never used .mac sync. This would require me
to 1) buy a .mac account and 2) buy another yojimbo license. I don't
believe in the put EVERYTHING, including files, into your personal
information manager strategy. In the end you find yourself misusing
yojimbo as a file manager. On the other hand, it would certainly be
nice to put SOME files into it from time to time.

btw., I think the archive to yojimbo is meant for URLs. At least it
works with URLs.

Archive in Yojimbo seems not to function with PDFs (at least
nothing happens)

I would like to do the following: selct a pdf in Finder, Command

And it would be great to do that.
I try to learn now AppleScript for trying to write an action via a
script that will archive a pdf in yojimbo and which will present
you a dialog for adding tags like the
netnewswire_to_pukka_and_yojimbo-script does.

Let me know whan I can beta test :)

cmd+esc doesn't work when you have FrontRow enabled - just disabled

If I use cmd+esc I can use the yojimbo-triggers.

Hello again,

Just noticed: It's a real pity you can not drag non-text files or
folders from Finder into the Yojimbo drop dock. It would be very
convenient if you could add bookmarks to files or folders by dragging
them into the drop dock. And since part of this functionality is
already there it shouldn't be too hard to do.

And how does Yojimbo decide wether a file dragged into the dock is
actually containing text? Seems like it's looking at the extension,
because I can not do this with .css files.

Beginners questions

2007-05-21 Thread Sebastian Stark

Hi there,

Just deciding wether to buy Yojimbo and have a couple of questions:

1. In the serial number and password templates the comment field is
way to small. How can I make it bigger? For instance, if I get an
email with a serial number in it, I want to store the whole email
along with the serial number. Then, for some products I have license
keys + several machines IDs that just need more space in the comments
field.

2. How can I create my own templates?

3. Is it possible to assign a new entry to a collection in the F8
quick entry form? You can enter tags there, so it should also be
possible to put something into a collection quickly.

4. What is the difference between labels and tags? And why can't you
make a label collection, just like a tag collection? If you can't
make a label collection (say, sth like To Dos), what's the purpose
of it?

btw, it would be nice if the yojimbo tagged bookmarks could be
synchronized with del.icio.us.

Thanks,
Sebastian
