[Zappa-List] Rotterdam 27/2/79

2006-12-25 Thread Glen Young
in A- quality has just recently been seeded on Zappateers.
Unfortunately this *best sounding* source is only available in mp3 format
but as this is the case and Zappateers can't get hold of a lossless copy
they have decided to go ahead and put the mp3 version up there.

I'm d/l it now and it will be interesting to hear what it sounds like.

And in case any of you are thinking this sad git is stuck on the pc not
having a Xmas,don't worry,I am.

Me and the wife are just starting to cook our Xmas meal and I'm just nipping
now and again to the pc to avoid peeling sprouts etc and was wondering what
are folk imbibing this Xmas ?

It's 11.35am here in the UK and I've just started on a pint of Bath Ales
Festivity which is a cracking rum porter weighing in at 5%...I have a 9
pint micro cask but won't be drinking all that today.

I know there are quite a few good micro breweries in the US,wasn't there a
Freak Out beer recently ?

See,I managed a post about Xmas food and still got a Zappa reference in

Further to my earlier post if you want this show you will need to get it
from Zappateers as it will not be allowed on Dime,Traders Den etc due to it
being lossy.

Or we could run a vine here in the New Year.

It's 9AM here in Michigan. I'm drinking a nice cup of Starbucks French Roast
(with a drizzle of Hazelnut creamer), trying to ignore the after effects of my
trip to Belgium last night...
We had our 'personal' gift exchange last night - later today is with the
extended family - and I did imbibe in some of my gifts: a tall Chimay, a small
Duvel, Maredsous, Corsendonk. As it appears I may never actually visit
Belgium, enjoying their Brew is a vicarious thrill.
Today, a tasty US Microbrew: Arcadia Scotch Ale.
But for now, the coffee is making my tongue feel less troop-trodden...
Merry Christmas, all!

I have a blue Chimay at 9% and a white Duval at 8.5% just waiting to be

I only bought them a couple of days ago as I wanted something *different*

It’s home brewed Starbucks Columbian here. Two packets of Splenda and some
Coffee-mate. The only booze I’ve had all weekend was a couple bottles of 20
proof Nyquil. Came down with the Flu suddenly Friday but I woke up this morning
feeling much better. Happy holidays to everyone.

Like a tidal wave of total weirdness, the Mothers of Invention
splashed down on the Fillmore West for a series of shows in November
of 1970 before washing back into the seedy ocean of L.A., leaving the
landscape forever changed (or at least confused and offended).

Not to be outdone by the art school drop-outs and buck-skin fringe
contingent then wandering the Sunset Strip, Frank Zappa had been
steadily releasing incredibly strange records since the mid-‘60s.
He abandoned the original Mothers at the close of that decade, only
to reform a different line-up under the same name in 1970, this time
including two members of the Turtles, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman
(sometimes known as Flo Eddie due to contractual problems), to help
with Frank’s increasingly bizarre comedy routines and, almost
incidentally, singing.

The opening set by Boz Scaggs couldn’t possibly have prepared
anyone for what was going to occur that night at the corner of Van
Ness and Market, though it did prove that Bill Graham had a pretty
good sense of humor. Eager to try out material from the upcoming 200
Motels film and accompanying album, the Mothers don’t move in any
one direction for too long; sometimes it’s as if they’re moving
in all directions at once. There are hints of jazz-fusion and
psychedelia, along with Zappa’s beloved doo-wop. They even make a
brief stab at the Turtles’ Happy Together as part of the groupie-
baiting sleaze-fest Daddy, Daddy, Daddy. This is a limber bunch,
but they’re at their best when playing it straight (Call Any
Vegetable from Absolutely Free is a prime example). Some songs are
derailed by excessive hollering and dialogue, the delivery of which
suggests the performers are nearly as bored as the audience they’re
baffling. Provoking the crowd, however, is part of the plan and
listening to Frank scold them for their indifference is highly
satisfying for anyone who’s ever stood under stage lights.

An appreciation for this performance depends entirely on one’s
threshold for long and noodly instrumental explorations accented by
dick jokes. But it can safely be said that no one else was doing
anything quite like this at the time. During an age of weird, Frank
Zappa had the distinction of being the unparalleled weirdest.
