No, here in the UK there's a lovely chap called Dave at a place called G&S
Music (www.gandsmusic.com) who specialise in Zappa and I just drop him an
e-mail and say 'when it turns up send me one' and then I don't have to think
about anything ever again - and I support a fellow one Englishman small
business type thing at the same time...

RE: [Zappa-List] Re: 40th anniversary of Zappa's albums

2008-11-06 Thread A.F. Harrold
I read the same interview as Bri, where Gail says:

"These two records happen to be Frank's masterworks," Zappa tells
Billboard.com, "so this is the most ambitious of all the (40th anniversary)
projects. The challenge is how to educate the audience to understand what
'Lumpy Gravy' and 'We're Only in It for the Money' are, and what they're
part of.

"So in this particular case we have to be more about the process than the
outtakes. You're going to be listening to how Frank worked, all the little
developments of these pieces as opposed to just an outtake or another
performance of that particular piece. You're going to hear how he got there
from here."

which did suggest it wasn't going to be outtakes and such - it sounds like
maybe it's incomplete outtakes - examples or something...

We'll just have to wait and hear what it's *actually* all about - whatever
it turns out to include (besides the obvious) I've got my copy reserved
already.

Well, this is what the press release says:
_http://www.shorefirhttp://www.shttp://www.shoreht&o=2388_
(http://www.shorefire.com/index.php?a=pressrelease&o=2388)

Noticed in the press release that David Fricke from Rolling Stone will be
contributing liner notes, which I think is cool. He appeared in the
Overnite/Apostrophe "Classic Albums" DVD and did some liner notes for the MOFO
set, as
well. Wonder when it was exactly that he got in touch with ZFT or vice versa
and
started getting involved in these projects. I've read his writing and stuff
here and there for some years and never really knew he was much interested in
Zappa before seeing him on that DVD.

I've been reading this comment in the various articles online and find
it kind of 'thin' to believe that those 2 were his
ultimate "masterworks".

Knowing the whole "Conceptual Continuity" theme from FZ's entire body
of work, for me it's all one big giant masterwork with some moments
being more masterful than others.

Lather (Greggary Peccary), Roxy & Elsewhere, Absolutely Free belongs in
the trilogy of Lumpy Money for my...money.

Uncle Meat, Waka Jawaka/Grand Wazoo, Overnite/Apostrophe, One Size,
Jazz From Hell, all the 88 stuff (Broadway, Jazz Noise, Best Band),
Yellow Shark, etcall masterworks.

The modern day version of We're Only In It being Tinseltown/You Are
What You Is. Anyway, I'm just blabbin'.

Apparently there's no - or not much - extra material left from the
Absolutely Free sessions. We should remember that this album was done
relatively quick and cheap, after the double album extravaganza of Freak
Out.

I would still welcome a remastered CD edition with both mono and stereo
versions though...

Yeah, I thought they skipped one, which you'd hardly expect given the ZFT
penchant for squeezing every cent out of us by issuing two versions of every
release each with exclusive material. Just imagine the marketing potential of
