I think it's mostly about what type of message we send people, and how
we're perceived. Now that we're also in KDE, and looking at other
platforms besides that as well, it looks strange for us to be in the
GNOME namespace.

Morten we should not break our current clients to satisfy upcoming
clients...
I know it seems weird but I think they can live with it since it just a
freaking namespace. I could call it org.hunannyyumyum.Zeitgeist and it
should not matter :)

Dude, what the hell? You were the one who asked me to submit this
proposal. Make up your mind.

The submission is to have the whole team discuss. I dont take the

I think mhr3's suggestion about using two namespaces for a while is a
good solution.
If we keep our existing gnome namespace, but deprecate it, and at the
same time move to freedesktop for 0.7, we could remove the gnome
namespace in some later release.
On 28 November 2010 17:17, Seif Lotfy
I agree with that approach
Maybe we can do that over the next 3 releases.
So for natty we will have 2 namespaces while for natty+1 we will have only
one

I don't agree with changing the namepsace for dbus names.
There is simply no good reason why we should make this move. After all the
gnome part is just a random string. And noone on KDE, Windows or whatever
platform should have a problem using this string.
Changing the name, maybe by even using
Marking as wontfix since this seems to be the consensus of a majority of
the maintainers

I don't think it is any more possible (if yes, then very tough). It
might break nearly all the applications. Fixing them would be a huge
pain and someone needs to track all such instances.

I don't have any problems with moving to freedesktop dbus name as long

You received this bug notification because
There's no need to actually move our code and infrastructure to
freedesktop.org hosting in order to be an official freedesktop
project. We can certainly keep our code on Launchpad if we want to do
that.
Additionally, we're definitely in freedesktop.org's target audience,
so it shouldn't be
Honestly I don't see what good this bring us except breakage of existing
libs. We could own two names, but that just seems silly. Application
authors should never need to see these namespaces. And it's a
*namespace* nothing more. I'm quite sure distributors and ISVs can see
past this.
