I have compiled dozens of applications with gcc 2.96. Several of them failed. But I
have only met two
causes of failure: crashes in early releases of gcc 2.96 (sinxce early 2001 it has
been rock solid for me
but perhapas I didn't compile the roght applications for crashing it) and undeclared
functions in C++.  Old
gcc's
WRONGLY accepted them while gcc 2.96 A ND gcc 3.0 will follow the standard and will
not compile.

Without further details you cannot tell if it is the compiler or the application who
is wrong.
