(1) Some applications are just plain broken.  That is, they don't compile
because the code is incorrect, although they used to compile because
gcc-2.95.3 compiled incorrect code instead of detecting the error.  For
these, the best bet is to get the maintainers to fix them.

(2) It is possible that there are errors in gcc-2.96RH.  (I think I found
one for C++, but I haven't had time to try to isolate it yet.  The code
compiles under 2.95.3 and 2.96RH-latest, but the 2.96RH executable
crashes.)  For these, you can install gcc and the appropriate libraries
from the tarballs (say in /usr/local) rather than trying to downgrade the
RPMs.  Just remember, *don't* compile system components using it, *do*
make sure you link with the correct libraries, and *do* link statically.
