So, my layout becomes more simple because I do not
need the tunnels for the database servers. Please
take a look at the attached diagram.
Now, for the database backends, each controller will
use this URL for the backend it is managing:

Yes, this is correct.
What do you mean by "total order for the group
communication"?
The group communication must ensure that messages are delivered in a
total order (not FIFO order). This means that if controller1 sends
message1 and in parallel controller2 sends message2, both controllers
should deliver either message1,message2 or message2,message1 in the same
order to the application. The order should be exactly the same on all
controllers for all messages.
Also, I appreciate your advice on what happens
if the SSL tunnel goes down and we end up with
two divergent clusters. That is definitely a problem
to watch out for.
