I can see it now. Microsoft deploys C#. Sun develops their own C# virtual
machine which results in quirky behavior and poor performance of C#
applications on Sun. Microsoft sues Sun... Welcome to Episode II.

There will never be an end to this (un)holy war. Each technology has good
and bad attributes. But I do know this... when you enter a co-location
(e.g. Exodus Communications) and look at all the hardware inside the
cages... there is a heckuva lot of Sun equipment... and you you can be sure
that they are not running ASP/COM/MTS/MSSQL7 apps. ;)

Here is one reason why C# is not going to overtake Java...

The new .Net platform has a runtime environment that allows any (according
to MS) language to be plugged in. So instead of using C#, a third party
could provide .Net support for Java.

Also, .Net is not the only game in town...there is WebSphere from IBM and
.NOW from Oracle...and they use Java as the base language.

Toy my ass...I think that it is really funny when I here everyone from
Micrsoft say that C# is pretty much based on C++. I have been messing
around with C# in the Visual Studio .Net beta and C# is %90 java based...
not C++. The only thing that I think Sun should consider is maybe making a
compiled version of Java (call it CJava or CJ?), so native developers can
also use Java's kick butt environment.

Cheers!

It is from Sun Micro:

I've never heard of Forte. Where can I get more
information? I use Visual J++ and love it except it doesn't
do Java 2 (including Swing), and Micro$oft has discontinued
support as a consequence of it's continuing struggle to
control Net development (C#) without having to license from
Sun.

Speaking of which, and I know this is off-topic, but I'm
very curious. A friend of mine thinks Java is a toy in the
programming toolbox and believes C# is going to replace it
as the language of the Net. Thoughts?

I think VisualCafe is the worst thing ever.
First of all, it's discontinued, so that's one good reason
to stop using it.
Second of all, it generates dirty code and might lose th GUI
editing if you
edit wrong parts of the code, and its event-listeners are
buggy.
Third of all, it's expensive.
Fourth, some applications created on VisualCaf won't run in
Linux........
Five, it uses proprietary packages and its own jvm
I could go on for a long time...

Use Forte Community Edition. It's just the best. Internet
version (for
servlets) costs 149$

Cheers.
