Thousands of people. The servlet-interest list is the biggest Java
list that Sun have AFAIK.

I have a couple of points to make. I'm one of the longest serving
members here now (perhaps *the* longest serving?) and I've ssen a lot
of changes since this list grew out of the java-webserver list.

Originally we were a community. What changed (in about '99) was that
experts started leaving because of the amount of mail.

Some of us who remained got annoyed with posters here because the
questions they were asking had all been answered 2, 3, 4 or more times
before and the repeat questions were particularly what drove other
experts away.

This list has been poorer ever since.

I (and others) have tried to combat this in 2 ways:

1. we setup a home for servlet experts to hide away from this list,
to keep them within a community if not this one

2. we setup a list for people who felt they were nearlly advanced but
wanted some help in achieving guru-hood.

3. we kept posting here on the more detailed questions and
occasionally got cross and said "that's off topic" or "that's been
answered before"

I *really* appreciate Pier's involvement. I hope some of you know how
instrumental Pier has been in the servlet world.

I do hope you can achieve the aim of making this a community again,
it hasn't felt like one for a very long time indeed.
