The Mono compiler is GPL. I don't think anyone outside of the core Mono group
has modified it. It was "complete" early, and there is not a lot of need for
anyoe to modifiy it.
The Mono runtime is LGPL. Like the compiler, I don't think anyone outside of
the core Mono group has modified it. It was "complete" early, and there is not
a lot of need for anyoe to modifiy it.

The libraries are where the bulk of the work is, and they are X11, leave our
copyrights in the source code, otherwise do what you want. We have had about a
dozen corporations contribute to the libraries. To my knowledge, only one
company has made chages that were not contributed back to Mono, and that was
because they were using an old version of Mono, and could not figure out a way
to merge their changes back into the newer Mono; they did try though.

I don't think the licenese is that important, because of the nature of
SharpOS (experimental OS), I doubt anyone will use, modify, buy, or steal our
code.

If we spent as much time on code as we spent on the mailing list the last
few days, we would be done by now!

Mono has two mailing list, one open to anyone, and one only open to those who
have contributed at least a single line of code or documentation.

I am for a little less talk, and a lot more action.

Think of Mono. If it was GPL - well it would be DOA and almost not used. Its
LGPL. The compilers are GPL - but the distinction is clear. But I think that
actually hinders usage a bit... We might have better dev tools if others
could reuse that code more freely instead of just calling it as an app.....
