I have added a jig to my flex board (get some use out of the thing!) that rests the shaft on 36" centers. I have mounted a dial indicator in the center so that I can measure bend in thousandths of an inch. This is admittedly getting anal, but I have been periodically attempting to document steel shafts for the relationship of the measured spine to residual bend, out of round, etc.
My initial setup was a piece if 1 X 6 with two upright pieces nailed to the ends and notched to hold a shaft. Took about 15 minutes to build and works fine for observing residual bend. You can stand a ruler on it's end near the high point of the bend and observe the amount as you rotate the shaft
with one hand. You'd be surprised to at what can be observed in this manner. You will discover twists and all manner of irregularities.
Why haven't I documented graphite shafts yet?
