I've recently been looking at the Momentus and Maximus weighted
practice drivers. Anything to help my pitiful swing! The problem
is the cost.
I figured I could make one myself for a fraction of the price. The
Momentus weighs 600 grams with a 350 gram head. The Maximus weighs
1020 grams overall but there is no information on the head
weight. The Momentus ratio is 53% head weight and 47 % shaft
weight. I thought I would follow that ratio but split the
difference in overall weight for a total of 840 grams.
A couple of disagreements with your design:
(1) A quick visit to the Momentus site
(http://www.momentusgolf.com/products/phitter/) shows that they have
six models. You propose building one well over their maximum model.
Unless you are a genuine long drive competitor looking to improve
your power still further, you are using too much weight. (Even if you
ARE, it's probably too much weight.) Yes, I know the Maximus is much
heavier. Let me suggest you at least audition both before making your decision.
(2) My arithmetic does not agree with yours. I get a 58%-42% split
right down the line for all six Momentus models.
I have made my own weighted driver. Standard weight steel shaft and a
driver head weighted to 325g, for a total of about 500g (including
grip). It's PLENTY for me. It definitely improves my swing. And a
20-ball warm-up starts to get to my back; any heavier and the warm-up
would do more harm than good. But I'm 66 years old, so YMMV. In any
event, you probably should look at the variety of Momentus home page
to see what weight they recommend for each level of fitness and power.
I just don't see a 1000+ gram driver as an ideal training aid. But
I'm not crazy about Medicus' best-selling hinged club either. I got
much more training benefit out of a very flexible shaft than I ever
did from the hinge.
Good luck!
