There is no single control for either mic or speaker volume. See:

http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Neo_Freerunner_audio_subsystem#Alsamixer_channel_controls

Most volume settings on the Openmokos are affected by two or more controls in
series, and if you have the setting too high on one of them you will introduce
distortion. I think the default setting of 7 for control 12 is too high for
many people, and is introducing distortion. The distortion then reduces the
effectiveness of the echo cancellation.

I have tried to simplify volume control in fso-simplemixer.py by giving a
single slider for each for mic and speaker, and setting a sensible combination
of the 2 or 3 alsa controls to give the volume setting asked for.
