I don't believe a 'good' default is possible with this hardware unless there's an automatic gain control available in the GSM chipset that we don't know about. The AGC in the Wolfson chip doesn't seem to be useful with the signal level we have available. Without AGC the natural variation in how people hold the phone, and how loudly they speak, is enough to make the default 'wrong' for a large proportion of users. A few months ago many people were complaining about the default being too quiet.
