I haven't heard anything bad other than the usual "Oh but the bandwidth
is shared" and the "Oh but it's insecure" type of thing. There is
actually a linux cable modem howto, and to be honest it looks like
setting it up is rather ridiculously easy.

I *really* don't see a problem with using a 486 as a gateway/firewall.
The faq may be a little misleading, it may in fact be that windows on a
pentium can handle only about 4 Mbps, because I'm not sure that the
actual x86 hardware could be limited in this way -- I'm pretty sure
I've exceeded 4 Mbps on my ethernet (although not to the 486 windows
machine). If the 486 is a dedicated firewall/gateway, the system load
on it will barely even flicker -- so I really don't see how it could
possibly cause a bottleneck.
Also, did RR contact you? I am also on their "early bird" list but
haven't been contacted. Should I contact them?
