I have had ADSL for over three months and not had the problems you
describe. I could be lucky or the only one in my area who has adsl....
On the other hand, I thought ping would measure the round trip to a
destination in it's entirety, not just the link between my box and the
backbone....Is there a way to extrapolate that information from ping?
The other thing- the Alcatel modems take forever to initialize...almost
a full minute the last time I had to restart the thing ( to add a UPS).
Traceroute kind of gives me specific times to various points on the
route to the destination IP address, but those change every time I run
traceroute......
I do have my own nameserver and it works jest fine...YMMV
The phone company doesn't guarantee speed on the net...just the speed
from their junction to your house. ( now I sound like I'm doing a
commercial for them.....I am not...they will be used by me until
something better comes along......)
