for domestic, that doesnt hold good

for international - agreed 100%.. besides a good TA can do stuff like book
you into specific fare buckets (V for example is the lowest class that's
economy and still earns 100% miles on air france / lufthansa..), also can
block a booking and hold it for a few days instead of ticketing immediately
as would happen on an online booking site, etc.

She's biased of course, and I suspect her advice only holds true for
some of the higher end travel agencies that have higher service
standards.

The "travel agency" doesnt matter as much as the agent who does the
booking. Find a clueful agent and have some clue about how an airline gds
like amadeus or galileo works, and you have got it made.
