Her advice: use online booking sites to help you negotiate with your travel agent, but don't actually book tickets through them.
Exactly. Use the travel sites for fare comparisons, schedules and possible connections, nothing more. Here in Gibraltar, if I take an online price quote printout for a set of flights to any high-street travel agent, I get guaranteed cheaper-by at least £10 tickets for the same flights.
She's biased of course, and I suspect her advice only holds true for some of the higher end travel agencies that have higher service standards.
In India (due to the NRI fares) I use an agent of the Uniglobe franchisee chain - www.uniglobe.com. I have email/phone access 24x7 to them, hotels/visas/other consular help, immediate help in case of flight delays/cancellations/missed connections etc. which an online site can be hardly expected to provide.
