Exactly. Use the travel sites for fare comparisons, schedules and
possible connections, nothing more. Here in Gibraltar, if I take an
online price quote printout for a set of flights to any high-street
travel agent, I get guaranteed cheaper-by at least £10 tickets for the
same flights.

She's biased of course, and I suspect her advice only holds true for
some of the higher end travel agencies that have higher service
standards.

In India (due to the NRI fares) I use an agent of the Uniglobe
franchisee chain - www.uniglobe.com. I have email/phone access 24x7 to
them, hotels/visas/other consular help, immediate help in case of
flight delays/cancellations/missed connections etc. which an online
site can be hardly expected to provide.
