there is this railway line in tanzania called the TaZaRa railway
(almost completely fallen apart now...) ... it goes from Tanzania to
Zambia.....  the thing with this railway line is it was built by the
chinese in the 70s as a "gift" to socialist tanzania.... the most
striking thing about it, is the style of construction.
It has been built with some relentless, unstoppable philosophical
motive  - there are small hills and mountains along the line, the
chinese could have easily gone around the mountains, but they have
chosen to blast and tunnel through them again and again...
